Location-Based Services

...Have you ever wondered where you could find a great happy-hour bar recommended by your closest friends, or how far away you are from the nearest hotel and their website, or the nearest Latin American restaurant while you're on vacation? Location-based services allow you to access this information even when you are miles away from home. These services have a magnitude of uses in social networking, and they are largely accessible through mobile device networks. They use information on the geographical position of a mobile device and enable the user to find the nearest business or service. In addition, the combination of mobile apps and location-based services allows marketers to reach out to their customers to send them more targeted content. Not only do location-based services help the consumer, but they also help advertise the company through social media networks. Stating location is no longer just a form of showing the public what you have seen and where you have been. It is like a free advertisement or commercial for people that view that picture (instagram) or status (Facebook). It has created an extra column in the marketing aspect of the business both for future consumers as well as systems that try to adapt to the users preferences. Applications such as Foursquare, Wikitude, and Yelp are widely used by many people, but the Geographical Information Systems (GIS) community is still in search for the "killer app" that will become so widely used in society that......

Long Tail Marketing

...goods and services became as attractive as mainstream products. As example, prediction that demand for products not available in stores is potentially as big as for those that are. Social Network and Mobile Computing

...Location Recommendation for Location-based Social Networks Mao Ye Peifeng Yin Wang-Chien Lee Department of Computer Science and Engineering The Pennsylvania State University University Park, PA 16802, USA {mxy177,pzy102,wlee}@cse.psu.edu ABSTRACT In this paper, we study the research issues in realizing location recommendation services for large-scale location-based social networks, by exploiting the social and geographical characteristics of users and locations/places. Through our analysis on a dataset collected from Foursquare, a popular location-based social networking system, we observe that there exists strong social and geospatial ties among users and their favorite locations/places in the system. Accordingly, we develop a friend-based collaborative filtering (FCF) approach for location recommendation based on collaborative ratings of places made by social friends. Moreover, we propose a variant of FCF technique, namely Geo-Measured FCF (GM-FCF), based on heuristics derived from observed geospatial characteristics in the Foursquare dataset. Finally, the evaluation results show that the proposed family of FCF techniques holds comparable recommendation effectiveness against the state-of-the-art recommendation algorithms, while incurring significantly lower computational overhead. Meanwhile, the GM-FCF provides additional flexibility in tradeoff between recommendation effectiveness and computational overhead. networking services allow users to connect with friends, explore......

...for Personal Predictive Mobile Commerce Andreas Komninos, Peter Barrie, Julian Newman, Stuart Landsburgh Department of Computer Science Glasgow Caledonian University Glasgow, UK [ako2, pba4, jne,slands10]@gcal.ac.uk Abstract Given mobile phone penetration statistics and current mobile phone technical specifications, it is apparent that in developed countries, the majority of citizens carry not just mobile phones, but true mobile computing devices. These devices are still primarily used for telephony, although information access is slowly emerging as a popular service on these devices. Despite the availability of network connectivity and device characteristics that make Information Access possible, this is currently generally confined to accessing the WWW. While useful, this method is not the best way of providing information access to mobile devices. This paper discusses current research in the use of mobile services and proceeds by presenting a background on an infrastructure for a focused information access application for mobile commerce. Through this background, we discuss the need for embedding multi-dimensional context awareness into the design of applications that provide dedicated, targeted and personalised information access to users, and describe the dimensional vectors necessary for the acquisition of contextual information. Further to this, the paper highlights the challenges that must be overcome in obtaining contextual information on a mobile computing......

...vehicles are required to service the destinations, and developing a route and schedule for each one. Because there are many variations of the problem, it can be very dillicult to solve. TransCAD provides a rich set of vehicle routing tools that solve various types of routing problerns,These tools are used to prepare input data, solve the routing problem, and provide tabular and graphical output of the resulting routes and vehicle schedules. The starting points for each route (such as the warehouse in the above example) are known as depots, and the points to be visited are known as stops. A vehicle route starts at a depot, visits one ormore stops, and may or may not return to the depot. The goal of the procedure is to obtain a set of routes that minimizes the total time or discance traveled by the entire fleet of vehicles. The travel times or distances are stored in the vehicle routing matrix. You can use a network to calculate the network driving time or distance, or you can use straight line distances to create your vehicle routing matrix. You must use a network-based vehicle routing matrix if you want to display the routes on a map as a route system layer.Time window- There are time restrictions on when deliveries can be made to some or all of the stores Each stop requires a certain amount of time to service. The service time can have a fixed component and a variable component that is demand dependent (time per unit). In most cases, each stop has a fixed service time that is......

Location Strategy

...Chapter 8 Summary: Location Strategies Team #: 3 Team Members: Daniel Coughlin Joel Nemr Jennifer Ogle Operations Fundamentals Prof. Riaz Khan 63.501.201 Date: 04/11/2012 Location Strategies Strategic Importance of Location Overview As markets continually expand, the location of a business becomes increasingly important. Location choice can provide a company with distinct advantages. The ideal location should provide an overall maximum benefit to the company, factors considered vary depending on business type. Some businesses may realize the most benefit from maximizing revenue, while others may benefit most from reduced costs. Factors that may trigger a relocation need include changes in demand, production capacity limitations, labor productivity, exchange rates, costs, local attitudes, or changes in demographics. Location and Costs Location can cost up to 25% of a products selling price solely because of transportation costs. Other location factors may alter total operating expenses by up to 50%. These costs may be a result of taxes, wages, material costs, or rent/leases. Different locations have different costs associated with them. One location may have high operating costs, but cheap labor. Another may have expensive labor, but a good work ethic that benefits the overall productivity of the workforce. Location decisioning is worth investing in. Adding unnecessary costs to the creation of products will result in less overall revenue, or the...
