LogMeIn, Inc. is a computer software business that specializes in providing users access to computer resources from anywhere. Utilizing cloud technology, LogMeIn provides individuals and businesses the opportunity to use their smartphones or I pads to remotely access their PC's. They offer free services as well as premium services that have more features. Their free service, LogMeIn Free offers free access for users to access their desktops and retrieve files or surf the internet. Their premium service, LogMeIn Premium offers features such as High Definition, the ability to transfer files, and local printing. They have established a large user community with over 38 million users, and pride themselves on their user satisfaction, fast service, security, and easy to use software. Their software is available to download on the apple app store, and the android market. Their growth strategy is to acquire new customers by offering free trials, and increase sales to their current customers, all while LogMeIn operates under the 7372 SIC code, which is classified as prepackaged software. A major competitor to LogMeIn, Inc. is Citrix Systems, Inc. Citrix provides a similar service known as GoToMyPc. The software allows users to use a host computer to access their home or work PCs. They also have an app located on the apple app store that is designed for I Pads. Citrix produces a lot more software and has more customers than LogMeIn, Inc. Citrix is a bigger company and offers more services such as consulting and technical support. They offer more features than LogMeIn including high definition video conferencing and an online training program. Citrix is also doing better financially compared to LogMeIn. While they have seen an almost 20% increase in sales growth, their income growth has decreased 70% over the last 12 months. In that span, their income was $3.80 million which doesn't seem like a lot compared to $361.15 million for Citrix. Again, Citrix is a larger company and provides more services, so they should naturally bring in more income. In the past LogMeIn was not making profits, but the past three years they have been profitable. They also do not have any long term debts and $4 billion in assets. LogMeIn has a stock value of $23.25, and Citrix's stock value is $80.34. MSN money gives LogMeIn a stock rating of 3 out of 10, while Citrix received a rating of 8. Out of 117 businesses in the application software industry, LogMeIn ranks favorably in some statistics, and the middle of the pack in others. They rank very well in Price-Earnings ratio, and market capitalization. Market capitalization is calculated by taking the share price by the number of outstanding shares, and provides a good measure of the worth of a company. However, even with these promising results I would not make an investment in the company. After reading through the most recent 10 K document, the company has warned that the stock value could drop, and that they would not be declaring any dividends in the future. They have indicated that the price of their stock was volatile meaning it can fluctuate rapidly. I really like the idea of LogMeIn, but I feel like the company needs to create different types of software. I would feel more comfortable investing in Citrix Systems, Inc. because of its stock value, and because it is offers more software and services. Citrix is an industry leader and ranks favorably compared to other businesses. Citrix also has plans to grow internationally, and continue to improve their technology. If LogMeIn can continue to grow and can offer new software, then it will definitely be a company I would invest in.

...VPN The first step in setting up a VPN for me was to locate the VPN client that I was going to utilize. That was probably what took the longest, between research and trial and error that took a couple of days. I finally settled on LogMeIn it is an amazing third party program that is already configured for your use all you have to do is download the application on all the devices you want to VPN in to. Then go to www.logmein.com sign in using your username and password, go through their steps and you will be able to log in to any machine you have the software installed on from anywhere. I went a step further knowing that I might not always have my laptop or even access to a computer when I need some information from my home computer. I installed the application on my iPhone and now can access my home and laptop, as long as they are powered on from anywhere I have cellphone service. Some of the other great services that this application offer are; I can manage downloads and critical updates to my systems remotely, send hyperlinks to friends and coworkers of files that cannot be sent via email, even move files from one computer to another, as well as easily save files to my iPhone. Over all I give this application a 5 star rating on a 5 star scale. It does everything that I was needing plus things that I was want and even more after...

Diffusion of Innovations

...Startups live and die by their ability to drive customer acquisition growth. Of course many startups are doomed to failure and can’t grow because they never reach product/market fit. But even with product/market fit, traction is tough. Startups are under extreme resource constraints and need to figure out how to break through the noise to let their target customers know they have a superior solution for a critical problem. Breaking through the noise is very difficult when well-entrenched companies have the resources to dominate traditional channels. The best a startup can hope for in traditional channels is to siphon off a few early adopters that are always on the look out for the latest emerging solutions. This resource-constrained desperation is exactly the scenario that Malcolm Gladwell suggests leads underdogs to extreme innovation. Desperation Leads to Innovation For meaningful growth, startups must completely change the rules of traditional channels or innovate outside of those growth channels. They are too desperate and disadvantaged to adapt to the old rules of marketing. They have to dig deep creatively, and relentlessly test new ideas. If they don’t figure it out quickly, they will go out of business. Some people would just call this marketing. I call it growth hacking. And the best growth hacks take advantage of the unique opportunities available in a connected world where digital experiences can spread rapidly. Since most growth ideas fail, it...

Network Design for Remote Monitoring

...My capstone project is to recommend a Windows networked environment to facilitate the remote monitoring of neuro-surgeries. As a consultant I was approached by XYZ-Monitoring to assist in the design of a network from the ground up that would support the remote monitoring of neuro-surgeries using Cadwell Laboratories’ Cascade system. XYZ-Monitoring (herein referred to as XYZ) wanted a Windows network that would be integrated with their existing Cisco ASA firewall device. XYZ wanted to use a virtualized environment because they had a limited budget for new hardware. They needed a secure solution that would meet HIPAA requirement concerning the security of patient data. XYZ requires all users to connect to their environment through a VPN connection bound to the Cisco ASA firewall. They have three user groups that will need to have access to the environment; however, they have multiple clients that need to remain separated when connected to the network. Given these requirements by XYZ, it was clear they wanted an Active Directory integrated environment so that users would be grouped by job function and by client. XYZ would need at least three high level Organizational Units (OUs), one for each job function; they would also potentially need an OU for each client. They would need Group Policy Objects (GPOs) to provide ease of administration once the design was complete as well as provide access policies to the environment based on job function. Provided with these requirements...

...Intellectual Capitalism 2 Verizon Q1: How can this video inform your company president based on the contents of his letter? (video) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yd98Naz8jvQ One of the key focal points of Verizon’s strategic position is exploring the Internet of Things. Understanding and creating solutions on this new platform will be paramount to staying ahead of direct competitors. To address this topic and the challenges and opportunities that lie therein, Chad Jones, formerly of Xively by LogMeIn, delivered the above-linked lecture at the Harvard Innovation Lab entitled “The Business of the Internet of Things”. The Internet of Things (aka Internet of Everything, Industrial Internet) is viewed as the next great technological revolution that will transform how we experience our daily life. The exploration of this new frontier has captivated many different industries, such as energy, health care, manufacturing, construction, and transportation. Many have begun to “connect” devices by incorporating sensors or software that can be remotely monitored, enabling seamless communication in real-time between computer networks and the physical world. Estimates are that by the end of 2014, there were 1.2 billion connections in Internet of Things, and future projections have that number leaping by as much as 5 times by 2020 with the potential to boast nearly 1 trillion connections by 2025. The economic impact is being estimated at $4.6 trillion by 2020, at which point could...
