Bullying Report
Bullying is an issue to study in human development because it can lead to physical injury, social problems, emotional problems, and even death. Children and adolescents who are bullied are at increased risk for mental health problems, including depression, anxiety, headaches, and problems adjusting to school. Bullying also can cause long-term damage to self-esteem. Children and adolescents who are bullies are at increased risk for substance use, academic problems, and violence to others later in life. Children or adolescents who are both bullies and victims suffer the most serious effects of bullying and are at greater risk for mental and behavioral problems than those who are only bullied or who are only bullies. As counselors we will found that unlike traditional forms of bullying, youth who are bullied electronically such as by computer or cell phone are at higher risk for depression than the youth who bully them. It will be surprising; we will find that cyber victims were at higher risk for depression than were cyber bullies or bully-victims those who both bully others and are bullied themselves, which was not found in any other form of bullying. We most agree that what sets bullying apart from mean behavior is that bullies intend to harm their targets. There’s also an imbalance of power and the acts are usually repeated. Lets understand the three components. Power imbalance is when there is an imbalance of power and it is hard for the target to defend himself against the bully’s attacks. This difference in power can be physical or psychological. For instance, in cases of physical imbalances, the bully may be older, larger or stronger. Or, there may be a gang of bullies targeting the victim. Meanwhile, psychological

...Stevens Institute of Technology) and Molski, in their essay entitled The Lost Art of Writing,[12][13] are critical of the terms, predicting reduced chances of employment for students who use such slang, stating that, "Unfortunately for these students, their bosses will not be 'lol' when they read a report that lacks proper punctuation and grammar, has numerous misspellings, various made-up words, and silly acronyms." Fondiller and Nerone[14] in their style manual assert that "professional or business communication should never be careless or poorly constructed" whether one is writing an electronic mail message or an article for publication, and warn against the use of smileys and these abbreviations, stating that they are "no more than e-mail slang and have no place in business communication". Yunker and Barry[15] in a study of online courses and how they can be improved through podcasting have found that these slang terms, and emoticons as well, are "often misunderstood" by students and are "difficult to decipher" unless their meanings are explained in advance. They single out the example of "ROFL" as not obviously being the abbreviation of "rolling on the floor laughing" (emphasis added). Haig[1] singles out LOL as one of the three most popular initialisms in Internet slang, alongside BFN ("bye for now") and IMHO ("in my honest/humble opinion"). He describes the various initialisms of Internet slang as convenient, but warns that "as ever more obscure acronyms emerge they can also...

Socio 101

...Due Date: April 22, 2013 Don’t Judge A Book By It’s Cover I was the one to walk in first to do this project, to see the people’s faces turning my direction in an unpleasant way. The store that I walked into was called “Dress Town” at the Eagle Rock Mall on Sunday, March 10, 2013 in the afternoon. As walking into the mall and into the store, we three girls had to put ourselves into a mind of a sociologist; and how they would “judge the book by its cover.” But realistically the shocking part is that they don’t, instead they use their sociological imagination to broaden their thinking mentality, to find other ways to live. Who ever said that there only is one certain way to live and that is the correct way? I realized that as Meghedi, Ani and I were walking the normal or decent looking shoppers were keeping a good amount of distance, more than usual. Also, the shoppers that had children with them, they were pulling their children towards them in a noticeable way while staring at us. As I walked into the store, being extremely nervous because I was the first one to do this project; completely nervous, not knowing what was to come before me, there were four sales associates. One of the associates stood by the door and greeted each customer as they walked in. When I walked in that girl greeted me but not the same way that she greeted the other customers. Her greeting them was a lot sincerer compared to the way she greeted me. Everyone seemed to be staring at me but when...

How Technology Has Changed Our Language

...Twitter.  Social media’s been responsible for a lot of new words, for example tweeps, twitterverse and retweet. The word “friend” has become a verb, as in “she friended me on Facebook”. The term “check-in” no longer applies just to hotels and airports; these days it’s just as commonly used when someone reports where they are via a social network. Technology has also changed the way we write. Mobile phones have been responsible for a lot of the change, as users have moved towards texting as an everyday form of communication. For a start, WRITING IN UPPER CASE MEANS YOU’RE SHOUTING, while lower case writing is now the accepted form. Meanwhile, text language is full of abbreviations, missing vowels and acronyms. For example, the abbreviations LOL, OMG and gr8 are all widely used today but hadn’t been invented a few years ago. One of the drivers in this is that screen sizes and character limits are low, meaning that users need to abbreviate to fit their messages in. My Knowledge: ‘Emojis’ which are small digital images and ‘emoticons’ which are representation of a facial expression such as a smile or frown, formed by various combinations of keyboard characters are also now used because of technology. Their main purpose is to show how someone is feeling and their emotions rather than a person typing out how they are actually feeling. Technology has also enabled new words to be created such as ‘selfie’ ‘twerk’ ect. Without technology, there would be no way in which everyone would...

...Reaction Paper Extraordinary Measures A Portland couple have two younger children that are afflicted with Pompe’s disease, a rare neuromuscular ailment that is usually fatal within the first eight years of life. Megan is the partner’s 8-year-old middle child and Patrick is the 6-year-old youngest, so time is running out of them. The husband, an advertising executive, leaves his job and contacts Dr. Robert Stonehill, a cranky, renegade scientist in Nebraska who has done an unprecedented research for enzyme treatment and is one of the leading researcher in the field of Pompe’s who’s idiosyncratic for thinking to the beat of rock music blasting from a boom box. The two men meet and clash after driving to the University of Nebraska where Stonehill is employed. He has little money to fund his laboratory, and a thorny personality that drives away colleagues and funders. John and his wife Aileen raise money to help Stonehill's research and the required clinical trials. John takes on the task full time, working with venture capitalists and then rival teams of researchers. They lock horns with each other, venture capitalists, and finally a large genomic research corporation, Zymagen. Stonehill's angry outburst hinder the company's faith in him, and the profit motive may upend John's hopes. The researchers race against time for the children who have the disease. The film is maudlin to say the least but earnestly true. The very first thing I’ve learned in the movie is that you...

Integrity Produces Excellence

...“This is the word of the LORD: 'Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,' says the LORD of hosts” Integrity Produces Excellence This morning I will share how integrity produces a life of excellence. Remember to project your voice Open In Prayer Father I pray that as I share today your word will bring revelation to our lives. AMEN Opening Today we continue with the subject of Honesty and Integrity. Ps John has shared on Honesty is the only policy reasons we lie and facing the consequences. Last week he also spoke on Integrity today I will share on how integrity in our lives produces a life of excellence. 1. God loves a person that holds fast to their integrity Job 2:3 says: Then the LORD said to satan, "Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil? And still he holds fast to his integrity, although you incited Me against him, to destroy him without cause." We can see in this scripture that God loves a person that holds fast to their integrity so much that He boasts to satan that Job is a man of integrity and he holds fast to it. Remember to project your voice Today I would like to ask you, are you a person that holds onto your integrity when difficult times comes? Integrity is defined in the Webster’s dictionary as: Integrity comprises the personal inner sense of "wholeness" deriving from honesty and consistent uprightness of character...

...says ‘some say you are the mayor of Chicago’. We also learn that Capone has a criminal background when he openly admits that he is a business man who took advantage of prohibition. Ness was introduced in his home with his wife the mise-en-scene again reflects the twenties when you see his furniture and clothing. He was wearing a suit with a vest and eventually a brim hat as well which accurately captures the apparel worn in the twenties. Elliott Ness is introduced as a caring individual disgusted by the rising crime in Chicago. It is easily seen that he is not corrupt and wants to clean up the streets of Chicago. Malone was introduced on a bridge passing by and confronting Elliott for littering. The police uniform worn by Malone was old fashioned especially the hat he wore, he also carried a wooden baton like the police used to carry in the early nineteen-hundreds. A low angle shot is used when you see Ness on the bridge at first but then it merges into an equal level shot once Ness and Malone begin conversing. The use of rack focus is a good example of a moving camera shot. This can be seen when Ness is confronting Malone on the bridge after a comment Malone made about littering. The camera shot was moving with the two and was focusing on Malone when he was talking and then refocusing on Ness when he was talking. This was done to emphasize who was speaking and to draw more attention to a specific...

Arlin Schlabach Case Summary

...MILLERSBURG —A Millersburg area man on Monday admitted to possessing, but not sharing, child pornography, reducing him maximum possible sentence from 24 year to six years in prison. Arlin Schlabach. 49, 6061 State Route 241, Millersburg, pleaded guilty in Holmes County Common Pleas Court to four counts of pandering sexually oriented material involving a minor. The charges, all fourth-degree felonies, each carry a potential of up to 18 months in prison. In exchange for his guilty plea, the state agreed to dismiss two counts of pandering obscenity involving a minor, one count of attempted two counts of pandering obscenity involving a minor and two counts of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material. There was no agreement as to sentencing; however, Holmes County Prosecutor Sean Warner said he will argue for a prison term. Schlabach also faces fines of up to $30,000. Also to be considered at sentencing on Jan. 25 will be a sex offender assessment, to be completed on order of the court. Schlabach kept his head bowed as Warner outlined the case for Judge Robert Rinfret, who asked Schlabach if he, in fact, realized the children in the videos he downloaded, “may have been as young as 5 years old.” Warner said he offered the plea because it was unknown if Schlabach knowingly shared or published any of the downloaded images, although consent would have been included in his agreement to participate in file sharing. A guilty plea, he said, provided an opportunity to argue for incarceration...

Loch Animal Myths

...in the Scottish Highlands that Loch Ness is home to a mysterious aquatic animal. When the Romans first came to northern Scotland in the first century A.D., they found the Highlands occupied by fierce, tattoo-covered tribes called the Picts, or painted people. The Picts were amazed by all the animals and took great care in drawing them. All of the animals they drew are easily recognizable… except for one, which has attained a mythical status. It’s a very strange animal with an elongated beak or muzzle, a head locket or spout, and fins instead of feet. In Scottish folklore, large animals are mostly associated with bodies of water, from small streams to the largest lakes. These “water-horses”...

Nessie

...E Oversættelse When you first arrive in the Schottish town Inverness, and you take your first walk down the main street you get the impression that a lot of the inhabitants of the town, earn their living by the myth about the Loch Ness monster in almost every window you see nessie-posters. cards over Loch Ness with information about where and when she was seen the last time, Nessie on postcards, “Scientific” drawings by different prehistoric reptile which looks like descriptions of her, sea monsters of glass and porcelain, toys Nessies with bagpipe and tam o’ shanter, books full of shocking anecdotes and scientifical treatises about this famous sea monster, who maintains to live in the muddy water, way below the water level in the inconceivable deep Loch Ness. Zoologists, who believe IN Nessie’s existence, thinks that a prehistoric saurian family, so called plesiosaurus’, has survived in the depths of the sea, where it has fed of eel, salmon and trout, which is to be found in huge quantities in Loch Ness. The first written account about Nessie descends from the year 565, and since then Nessie has been seen many times, partly as a shadow right under the water level and partly as inexplicable humps in the water. 22nd July 1933 she actually came up from the water, if you should believe Mr. Spicer and his wife, who an early morning, drove through the winding road between the towns Dores and Foyers. They saw a giant creature lumber across the road, which at this point is very...

Through Raging Waters

...“I got you now!” Jor said as he rose from his seat. “No! You don’t!” I replied with a sneer look on my face. The Chicago Bulls beat the Charlotte Hornets by two points. “I knew you’d miss the last shot,” I added. “Shut up! I’ll get you next time,” Jor said furiously. He raged away from the TV, dropping his controller. He walked into his room completely frustrated and slammed the door behind him. I was pleased and carried on with my game. It was an unusual day. The sun was nowhere to be seen and the sky just kept on crying. It had been raining since I woke up. I could feel a rush of wind every now and then. The coldness made my breath visible. It was 6:30 in the morning and I was still on about the game. I was so focused on being the best. Or so I thought. I was interrupted by intermittent irritating barks. I paused the screen and investigated what my adorable tamed dogs were up to. I looked through the window pane and saw them barking and running into a frenzy. I noticed that my dogs were stepping on water. I realised that it was flooding and the water had reached the front yard. The sky kept on pouring water and it showed no signs of stopping. Unfortunately, I had to stop and act quickly. I opened my front door and ordered my dogs to come in. As soon as the three went in, I rushed and barged into my brother’s room. “Hey, look outside! It’s flooding and the rain isn’t stopping, the water just reached our front yard. What should we do?” I nervously...
