Looking for Alibrandi", by Melina Marchetta is a story about a young-intelligent and confident girl, struggling with her identityeand goes through many dramatic and important changes. Including achieving her emancipation, discovering her family secret, accepting her culture, and meeting her father, Michael Andretti. All of these changes help to shape the character of Josephine Alibrandi to allow her to realize what her place in life is.
Josephine is confused about her identity and how society won't accept her for who she is. Josephine wants to be free and make her own decisions by expressing her wish to be emancipated, to be free from cultural judgment and the boundaries of social class. 'I'll run one day. Run for my life. To be free and think for me. Not as an Australian and not as an Italian and not as an in-between. I'll run to be emancipated." (pg40).

Josie finally realized exactly who she was, and understands where she fits in society, and the lives around her. Also, things happened that she didn't really expect, like accepting her culture. She begins to understand the Italian family lifestyle. Nonna also starts to change her attitude towards Josephine and begins to accept some of the Australian ways of life.
"I've figured out that it doesn't matter whether I'm Josephine Andretti who was never an Alibrandi, who should have been a Sandford and who may never be a Coote. It matters who I feel like I am — and I feel like Michael and Christina's daughter and Katia's granddaughter; Sera, Anna and Lee's friend and Robert's cousin.
