My Civil Award is going to Loreta Janeta Velazquez, a woman soldier in the war. Her husband was leaving to join the Confederate Army and Velazquez begged him to let her come too. Unfortunately, he declined her request. Secretly, Velazquez disguised herself as a man by the name of Harry T. Buford and was off to be a soldier and later a spy. She eventually rose to a high rank of lieutenant and fought in many battles, some of them major.
