This story was about Mexican men who came to AZ to work in the mines. Before the Mexicans arrived to AZ they were promised great jobs and wages but none of that occurred. They weren’t considered human beings to the Americans; the Mexicans were used for hard labor.
In Clifton Morenci Arizona mining copper made them one of the richest mining districts in the U.S... Thousands of Mexican workers came to the United States because they were promised a better life. Among the first to arrive was David Valasquez he was a courageous man that left Mexico with nothing but his bags and false word from the United States. Along with David, most of the miners came from the Northern Mexican states of Sonora and Chiwawa. These miners have been mining for generations and were brought to Clifton Morencia where the population grew from 200 to 10,000. Copper was was a big necessity in Az. It was used for telephone lines, telegraph sevices, and power plants. The working conditions for the Mexican workers were beyond horrible. They used candles for light and spent 12 hours a day underground. They worked 4,000 feet below the surface and in a maze that tunnels 100 miles long. The work areas were cramped, the air was thin and the temperature was 104 degrees which is extremely hot! The Mexican workers were accustomed to these harsh conditions when it came to mining, but they weren’t prepared for the way they were going to be treated all because they were Mexican.
Mexicans were assigned the worst and most dangerous jobs in the mines. Anglo timberlands were paid four dollars while the Mexican timberlands were paid two dollars a day. Anglo muckers were paid one dollar and fifty cents while the Mexican muckers were paid seventy cent a day. As you can see the Americans bought them for their skills and treated them badly. Miners bought their food as dry goods at the Phelps Dodge merchant store. They were only allowed to buy a dozen of eggs and one pound of coffee, which in my opinion was not enough to take care of neither one self nor their family. They had a recreation facility that was off limits to Mexicans and also no Mexican was supposed to exchange words with and Anglo. Mexicans were forced to live on steep hills and their houses were made of scrap wood.
June 3, 1903 for the first time, 1000 Mexican workers went on strike for better pay and living conditions. The results of this strike resulted in no negotiation with the mining company. After the strike there was a major flood which flooded the city. Fifty people were killed instantly and a lot of the homes were destroyed. Soon after the flood was over the Mexicans went on strike again. This time U.S sent federal troops to disarm the strikers and placed the community under marshall law. During this strike, ten strike leaders were arrested and they spent three years in prison. Within two week of the strike ending everyone was back at work and the wage system was still in place.
Mexican returned to work but this time things were getting worst as far as working conditions. Silicosis, which is a lung condition, started taking a toll on the miners. One out of every three miners caught this disease. This disease was so bad that every time you cough; little pieces of your lungs would come out. A lot of Mexicans died from this disease and when so the dead bodies were taken to a burial place which the Americans called the “Catholic cemetery”. They called it that because they thought all Mexicans were catholic.
By 1915 a new union entered Arizona called I.W.W.. In June they demanded higher wages for the Mexican workers but Walter Douglas who was running the show at the time didn’t support that at all. In fact after that proposal 1200 prisoners were loaded on the paddle cars at the El Paso and Southwestern railroads. Mexicans were packed 50 to a cart and was hauled 200 miles to Columbus Mexico where the Mexicans were left without food and water and they were not to return to Bixby.
1931 was the beginning of the depression and the unions never returned. Mines were closed, eight million Mexicans were out of work, and Mexicans became the scapegoat across the southwest.
In the mid 1930’s they were recovering from the depression, mining was back in action and Mexicans were still the lowest paid workers. So, what did the United States do? They decided to recruit Mexicans to become soldiers; they wanted them to fight in the war.
After 50 years of fighting for equal rights the Mexicans prayers were answered. They started to get benefits, pensions, and hospitalization. Mexicans were able to move up the ladder. Their constant fighting and never giving up paid off.
This story taught me to always fight for what I believe in and believe in myself that I can make a difference if I just believe.

Gangs and Medida

...The media has always had a love affair with gang’s violence. Going back to the 1980s, many large city media outlet would have some headline news story of gang violence that happened in the city recently. A LA Times reported one said of his newspapers coverage that we “generally painted a scary scene” of gang violence (Metcalf, 2012 pg. 336). In fact, many report used the term “gang-related” with out any official police reports that it was a gang that committed that crime. This is because “it generated interest” in the story and due to journalistic liabilities, because “any group of people who are involved with crime can technically be termed a ‘gang’ even if they have no street affiliation” (Jankowski, 1992 pg. 286). Today, many media will admit, that in the 1980s there was a lot of hype about gangs and other social issues like the crack epidemic. Hollywood and the entrainment industry has also found a great success hyping up street gran activity in producing movies and television shows. Going back to 1961 with West Site Story, to Boyz ‘N the Hood (1991), and recently Dexeptz (2012). Each of these movies grossed millions of dollars. In the past few years you seen a number of street gangs shows on television, like the History Channels, Gangland (2007-2010) and currently The Devils Ride and Amish Mafia on the Discovery Channel. Some of these shows are questionable in the reality and truthfulness, however that just supports the idea on the media still enjoys the hype of gangs...

The sense in the start of asking Shaun to be a member of the group is to give him a little bit of fun in his life but after a few days the really going to like him so they buy him new clothes and cut his hair so he look like one of them. Later in the movie a guy named Combo want to start op his on gang or group and he tell Shaun to be a member of the gang because the will fight for England just like Shaun father did before he died. Woody’s group was more like a peacefully gang whereas Combo’s group was much more violent. The movie takes place in a little village in the poor society in England 1983. There are a lot of problems in the local community. One of the problems is that Combo’s group of skinheads are just threading the city like they want to nobody really dare to stand op for this group of people. That’s just making them do what ever they want to against the people in the village example in the movie they rob a little shop because the owner is an immigrant. Africa

...Africa has been faced with multiple problems to include, war, disasters, disease, environmental and tribal issues. But as stated in the article “The Heart of Matter”, the major issue is political and social representation. Many centuries have passed with repetitive actions, it is said that Africa is ultimately cursed and cannot be redeemed. I agree with the author in saying that there is a potential for change. Africa’s past and present political leaders have had good intentions, although lack the confidence, motivation and consistency needed to gain the trust of the African people. The election of individuals that possess these strong attributes along with the ability to develop and implement sustainable policies and programs is what is required for change. In Clark Rumrill’s article, “Tribal Conflict: What to Do? “, it is stated that more people have been killed by tribal conflicts than by the AIDS epidemic. Africa has faced a significant amount of turmoil and violence for centuries, that not only include its own citizens but Americans as well. The primary motive for tribal cliques is defending their sacred values. Rumrill stated tribalism is not of the American way. This can be argued because past and present actions of Americans are almost parallel to tribal practices. For example, violence and killings displayed by the Klu Klux Klan, Black Panthers, and street gangs (Bloods and Crypts). In my opinion the idea of defending ones sacred birth right can be positive and does...

Juvenile Justice

...members are literate. Gangs destroy teenager lives and destroy their chances for a good education and a happy life. Teenagers are joining gangs every day. They join gangs for many reasons. A former gang member known as G-Ball was very young when he joined his gang. He and a friend would play a game. They would pose as gang members to be cool. Then police arrested him and other gang members for stealing cars. G-Ball never wanted to be a gang member he wanted to act and dress like one. Gang violence is a major issue in the world today. It emerged in 2006 as a key factor in homicide resurgence. In Florida, statewide homicides jumped 27% in the first six months of 2006. Gangs are more prone in the major cities of the United States, like Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Chicago and there are many more. There are certain types of juveniles who are most likely to engage in this kind of violence, and they are, those who have behavior problems as young children, those who come from homes where their parents do not keep a close enough eye on them, and those who are being raised into gangs. Some current programs that are currently and effectively addressing gang problems are, neighborhood groups and life coaching through some schools. Another program that is trying to reduce gang violence is the California Department of the Youth Authority (CYA). In the mid 1970’s the CYA began to explore new and unorthodox methods of delinquency prevention. In 1976, these efforts resulted in the formation...

Porous Powers Create Los Angeles’s Character

...Title: Porous powers create Los Angeles’s character Los Angeles is a young city usually portrayed as a unique place that it captures the essence of a multi-ecological setting bringing the ocean, the skyscraper, and the happiest place on earth under one rooftop. Under this successful marketing pitch, the city has become one of the world’s biggest metropolises. However, the city is in the middle of the desert, and has insufficient natural resources to sustain life. As McWilliams said “Man has made it what it is” (pg.183). This diverse complex metropolis has had many rulers, but all of them have something in common, they have wealth, or they have control over scarce resources, a required need in which the individuals in the area acquire. These characteristics gives them the power, not a complete control, but rather the ability to set the terms under which other groups and classes must operate. In order to keep their power, they must be able to manage both wealth and resources. In this anthology I would present a view of the changes in the power groups in Los Angeles, how these changes created the character of the city, and who was left out of this equation throughout history. In every society there are experiences and material objects that are highly valued. If it is assumed that everyone in the society would like to have as great a share as possible of these experiences and objects, then the distribution of values in that society can be utilized as a power indicator. Those who...

Traffic in California

...vehicles on the road keep increasing with the growing population, but the roads stay the same. Take Los Angeles for example: the estimated population is 3.7 million with the average household having 1.8 vehicles. This makes the estimated vehicles in LA roughly 6.5 million with millions more commuting to the city for work, school, and other activities. With these facts combined it makes for one of the most stressful scenarios Californians will ever encounter. A person in California will quickly learn the meaning of time management. A commuter will have many different variables that will affect their commutes on a daily basis. Accidents, construction, and weather are just a few examples of these variables. Accidents can affect a drivers’ commute from minutes to hours depending on the severity. Construction may not have the same affect as accidents, however; it could lead to taking different exits, freeways, and roads, greatly increasing the length of a drivers’ trip by distance and time. Even though Los Angeles regularly experiences rainfall, drivers are still extremely cautious and slow down their speeds anywhere from 10-30 mph causing congestion and gridlock. Having all these obstacles to consider, a California driver has to learn the importance of time management and apply it to their commutes. In conclusion, there are still many other factors and topics that affect traffic in Los Angeles but understanding the importance of time management and personal responsibility will make...

Kidnapping

...Capital of the World." As of 2007, that title belongs to Iraq with possibly 1,500 foreigners kidnapped.[22][23] In 2004, it was Mexico,[24] and in 2001, it was Colombia.[25] Statistics are harder to come by. Reports suggest a world total of 12,500-25,500/year with 3,600/year in Colombia and 3,000/year in Mexico around the year 2000.[26] However by 2006, the number of kidnappings in Colombia had declined to 687 and it continues to decline.[27] Mexican numbers are hard to confirm because of fears of police involvement in kidnapping.[28] "Kidnapping seems to flourish particularly in fragile states and conflict countries, as politically motivated militias, organized crime and the drugs mafia fill the vacuum left by government."[21] In 2009, the Los Angeles Times named Phoenix, Arizona[29] as America's kidnapping capital, reporting that every year hundreds of ransom kidnappings occur there, virtually all within the underworld associated with human and drug smuggling from Mexico, and often done as a way of collecting unpaid debts. Other major U.S. cities that are hotbeds for kidnappings are Detroit, Atlanta, New Orleans, Houston, and Chicago.[29] Many of them are done by major street gangs near tourist attractions. During the year 1999 in the United States, 203,900 children were reported as the victims of family abductions and 58,200 of non-family abductions. However, only 115 were the result of "stereotypical" kidnaps (by someone unknown or of slight acquaintance to the child, held permanently...
