Colonialism diminished the allure of the harem as Grigsby’s quote would suggest. The women of the harem became an object that was passed through the hands of many men similar to the pocket watch she mentions at the end of her article (Grigsby, pg. 86). Before the accessibility to the harem, it was a space that was virtually impenetrable to outsiders and was through this idea of an impenetrable space that the harem was extremely desired and fantasized about. But through colonization, this revealing of men’s fantasy and mystery ultimately caused the “loss” of the harem. Further, the loss of truth in the paintings added to the loss of the harem (Grigsby, pg. 87). By “forgetting” details, the harem becomes lost in a mix of exciting colors, poetry and exotic objects.
This access to the Orient, in general, originally was only through the military. But because of the steam engine, travel was greatly increased (Benjamin, pg. 14). This contributed to the decrease of desire and exclusivity of the harem. Grigsby's quote formulated this idea that the access gained by foreigners to the harem lessened the value of this space because it acted as a commodity, a space that was experienced by as many that wanted it. The harem turned into a place of commerce. Said contributes to this idea as well. He discusses the Orient's "untiring sensuality, unlimited desire" (Said, pg. 188). This parallels Grigsby's quote as it describes the Orient as a place where the "commodity" is never depleted much like an object in demand. This supports the observation of the lost harem as it suggests the overabundance and banality of the harem. Said follows this up when talking about Flaubert. Flaubert remarked, "the more you concentrate on it [in detail] the less you grasp the whole" (Said, pg. 189). Concentrating on the space of the harem and paying specific attention to the details (in contrast with forgetting the details mentioned above) one has the tendency to miss the essence of the harem and it loses the novelty it once possessed. By not taking in the sheer splendor of the space of the harem and relying on the excruciating details to tell the story, the harem as a whole is fragmented and loses its desirability. This absence of the original, impenetrable harem also relates to Nochlin's article The Imaginary Orient. She discusses the absence of history, the absence of brushstrokes, and the absence of work. She suggests that the Orientalist paintings are void of all these things due to the advances of colonization, which ties into the argument that Grigsby makes. Colonization makes the attempt to wipe out the culture of the said colony. Here, the absence of these themes is the effect of imperialism. The domination of one culture over another and, further, the domination of males over females contributes to the loss of the harem. The access to the harem for men meant that there was the possibility to have these women and it threw aside the exclusivity and mystery. Therefore the access to the harem meant the loss of it.

The Photographic Essay

...Teresa Hugo ENC 1939: College Writing II Scarlett Rooney October 2, 2012 The Photographic Essay W.J.T Mitchell believes that “Photography is and is not a language; language also is and is not photography.” (Mitchell 510) That would lead one to question where do images end and words begin? Mitchell would answer with the word “ekpharisis” (Mitchell 509), meaning that words give a voice to the photo. Victor Burgin and Ronald Barth have opposing views as to how this occurs. Roland Barth would argue that those words are written or implied, and are put there by the author. Victor Burgin believes that the words are put to the image by the viewer as he examines the photo, and that the images and words will be seen and heard concurrently. In the end, it would be agreed by both, that a reader’s emotions and experiences will guide how they “read” the words of a photograph. Victor Burgin’s idea is that the photo is a “message without a code” (Mitchell 510), and the image and the word are two separate forms of communication. If there is no caption on a photograph, the viewer would inject their own wording based upon on their own life experiences. “A photo is invaded by language the moment it is looked at and becomes an almost relic of the event it portrays.”(Mitchell) A viewer looking at a photo will immediately have thoughts come to mind, and those thoughts become the words of the photo. Roland Barth believes that a photograph has its own language that coexists within it, and he calls...

Why Sex Is Fun

..."Why is Sex Fun? is the best book on the subject I've read. This lively exploration of our sexual heritage offers fascinating reading for anyone curious about why lovers do what they do." -Diane Ackerman, author of A Natural History of the Senses "I am so jealous of Jared Diamond, for he writes with such an elegant simplicity! Here, he takes a loot at the endlessly fascinating topic of human sexuality His convincing arguments should persuade xm that there are very special reasons why we evolved to use sex for recreation as well as for procreatim whereas most other mammals are denied that pleasure.... It is a great little book, by one of the worlds foremost biological philosophers." -ROGER Shohl Professor of Physiology Monash University Australia "Once again Jared Diamond provides us with answers to questions we may never have stopped to ask, but wish we had. In this long essay Diamond explains that recreational sex, while not unique to humans, is a rare behavior in the animal world. Above all, we learn, sexual activity divorced fron procreation is not only part of what it is to be human, but the very crux of our evolutionary success." -Bettyaxn Kevles. author of Naked to the Bonn Medical Imaging in the Twentieth Centnty The Science Masters Series is a global publishing vonture consisting of original science books written by leading scientists and published by a worldwide team of twenty-six publishers assembled by John Brockman. ...THE RAMAYANA (“The Deeds of Rama”) Valmiki once was wandering through the forest along the bank of a river, when he noticed a pair of curlews hopping about on the grass, singing sweetly. Suddenly a hunter came along and killed the male bird with his arrow. As the bird was weltering in his blood and his mate mourning for him in pitiful tones, Valmiki was overcome with pity, and pronounced a curse on the hunter. But the words of the curse left his mouth in the form of a shloka-verse. Then the god Brahma appeared and bade the poet sing of the deeds of Rama in this very meter. Book I: Bala-Kanda (The Chapter on Rama as a Youth) In the land of the Kosalas (north of the Ganges), in the city of Ayodhya, there ruled a king named Dasharatha, who was mighty and wise, but still childless. The court advisor urged him to offer an imperial horse-sacrifice. The sage Rishyashringa, as the chief priest of this great sacrifice, includes an especially powerful offering rite that can cause the begetting of sons. When the offerings had been placed in the fire, the remnants were divided between the kings wives, who ate them. Just at that time the gods in heaven were much troubled by Ravana, the ten-headed demon king of Lanka. They therefore turned to Lord Vishnu, begging him to take human form in order to defeat Ravana. Vishnu agrees and resolves to be born on earth as the son of Dasharatha. So, after the horse-sacrifice was concluded, the three wives of King Dasharatha bore him four sons:...

...| Marijuana should be legalized | | Chioke s. Woodley | | 03/512 | Marijuana a preparation made from the dried flower clusters and leaves of the cannabis plant, usually smoked or eaten to induce euphoria. A strong-smelling plant from whose dried leaves a number of euphoria and hallucinogenic drugs are prepared. The most commonly used illicit drug; considered a soft drug, it consists of the dried leaves of the hemp plant; smoked or chewed for euphoric effect. Unfortunately, however, the financial costs of marijuana legalization would never outweigh its benefits. People may not realize it, but the United States spends billions of tax payers dollars fighting the so called “drug war” when there are so many more important issues at hand. I mean, let the people who want to smoke marijuana smoke marijuana peacefully, how is it bothering you? If the fact that you are not earning any tax dollars off illegal sales is bothersome, then just legalize it and tax it. Since 0.5 grams of marijuana is sold on the streets for about $8.60 and its production price is only $1.70 – that means that the legal selling price could be much lower than the street selling price, giving people incentive to purchase legally. A research company estimates that the industry is worth roughly $10 billion a year. Increase in marijuana prevalence resulting from legalization would probably increase the already high costs of marijuana use in society. Accidents would increase, health-care costs would...

Dramatic Irony of Wisdom

...THE DRAMATIC IRONY OF SOLOMON’S REQUEST FOR WISDOM INTRODUCTION King Solomon was a scholar and intellectual who knew the importance of discernment and wisdom in governing the people of Israel. He knew that it was important enough to ask God to grant him this wisdom rather than health, wealth or prosperity. The granted wisdom would ultimately lead to his downfall from God’s grace. Solomon, born to David at the height of his reign, never knew simplicity, David had erred once in fidelity, resulting in marriage to Solomon’s mother; Solomon erred many times over by marrying hundreds of pagan wives. Any service Solomon did perform for his people was more self-centered than other-centered. Living a lifestyle so far outside of God’s protective ideals resulted in a growing love for self, rather than for God. Solomon differed greatly from David, even early on, in his seeming lack of the passionate love for God that David possessed. His choices did nothing to kindle a growing love for the God he honored (Foster, 2005, 492). This paper will discuss how Solomon’s request for wisdom is an example of dramatic irony on the part of the Kings historian. This will be accomplished by defining what dramatic irony is and then examining Solomon’s character and the early years of his reign as king of Israel. The wisdom that he requested led to choices that he made in his personal and professional life that ultimately...

...RICHARD DAWKINS-The Selfish Gene. Ebook v1.0. 'Who should read this book? Everyone interested in the universe and their place in it.' Jeffrey R. Baylis, Animal Behaviour Our genes made us. We animals exist for their preservation and are nothing more than their throwaway survival machines. The world of the selfish gene is one of savage competition, ruthless exploitation, and deceit. But what of the acts of apparent altruism found in nature-the bees who commit suicide when they sting to protect the hive, or the birds who risk their lives to warn the flock of an approaching hawk? Do they contravene the fundamental law of gene selfishness? By no means: Dawkins shows that the selfish gene is also the subtle gene. And he holds out the hope that our species-alone on earth-has the power to rebel against the designs of the selfish gene. This book is a call to arms. It is both manual and manifesto, and it grips like a thriller. The Selfish Gene, Richard Dawkins's brilliant first book and still his most famous, is an international bestseller in thirteen languages. For this new edition there are two major new chapters. 'learned, witty, and very well written...exhilaratingly good.' Sir Peter Medawar, Spectator Richard Dawkins is a Lecturer in Zoology at Oxford University and a Fellow of Mew College, and the author of The Blind Watchmaker. Preface to 1976 edition This book should be read almost as though it were science fiction. It is designed to appeal to the imagination. But it is not science...

International Business

...Global Business Cultural Analysis: United Arab Emirates XXXXXXXXXXXX Liberty University Abstract In order to be successful in international business, one must have a certain degree of understanding about the country in which one wishes to conduct business. The United Arab Emirates is a federation of seven emirates in the Gulf region that has a culture vastly different than that in the United States, yet a business atmosphere that is very open to foreign investors. This paper evaluates the elements and dimensions of culture that affect the business relationship between the United States and United Arab Emirates, the differences between the two nations, and the implications for doing business in the United Arab Emirates for businesses from the United States. Global Business Cultural Analysis: United Arab Emirates Conducting business internationally requires a certain understanding of cultures that may differ greatly from one’s own. Though the world is growing ever more interconnected through globalization, cultural differences still persist and must be recognized if one is to be successful in international business. From the perspective of a businessperson in the United States, the United Arab Emirates presents a unique opportunity to conduct business with a nation with great cultural differences, yet an increasingly open mind in relation to Western culture. While the United Arab Emirates appears at first glance to be highly westernized in its culture, one would...

...IGOROTS * Home * IGOROT SONGS * IGOROT DANCE * IGOROT TRADITIONS * MONEY ON THE MOUNTAIN IGOROT TRADITIONS IGOROT TRADITIONS When we talk about Igorot identity and culture, we also have to consider the time. My point is that: what I am going to share in this article concerning the Igorot culture might not be the same practiced by the Igorots of today. It has made variations by the passing of time, which is also normally happening to many other cultures, but the main core of respect and reverence to ancestors and to those who had just passed is still there. The Igorot culture that I like to share is about our practices and beliefs during the "time of Death". Death is part of the cycle of life. Igorots practice this part of life cycle with a great meaning and importance. Before the advent of Christianity in the Igorotlandia, the Igorots or the people of the Cordilleran region in the Philippines were animist or pagans. Our reverence or the importance of giving honor to our ancestors is a part of our daily activities. We consider our ancestors still to be with us, only that they exist in another world or dimension. Whenever we have some special feasts (e.g., occasions during death, wedding, family gathering, etc.), when we undertake something special (like going somewhere to look for a job or during thanksgiving), we perform some special offer. We call this "Menpalti/ Menkanyaw", an act of butchering and offering animals. During these times we call them...
