A lot of people wonder how Chinese parents raise such stereotypically successful kids. They wonder what these parents do to produce so many math whizzes and music prodigies, what it's like inside the family, and whether they could do it too. Well, I can tell them, because I've done it. Here are some things my daughters, Sophia and Louisa, were never allowed to do:

• attend a sleepover

• have a playdate

• be in a school play

• complain about not being in a school play

• watch TV or play computer games

• choose their own extracurricular activities

• get any grade less than an A

• not be the No. 1 student in every subject except gym and drama

• play any instrument other than the piano or violin

• not play the piano or violin.

I'm using the term "Chinese mother" loosely. I know some Korean, Indian, Jamaican, Irish and Ghanaian parents who qualify too. Conversely, I know some mothers of Chinese heritage, almost always born in the West, who are not Chinese mothers, by choice or otherwise. I'm also using the term "Western parents" loosely. Western parents come in all varieties.

All the same, even when Western parents think they're being strict, they usually don't come close to being Chinese mothers. For example, my Western friends who consider themselves strict make their children practice their instruments 30 minutes every day. An hour at most. For a Chinese mother, the first hour is the easy part. It's hours two and three...

Mystery Egg

...Teacher Love at the lips was touch As sweet as I could bear; And once that seemed too much; I lived on air That crossed me from sweet things, The flow of - was it musk From hidden grapevine springs Down hill at dusk? I had the swirl and ache From sprays of honeysuckle That when they're gathered shake Dew on the knuckle. I craved strong sweets, but those Seemed strong when I was young; The petal of the rose It was that stung. Now no joy but lacks salt That is not dashed with pain And weariness and fault; I crave the stain Of tears, the after mark Of almost too much love, The sweet of bitter bark And burning clove. When stiff and sore and scarred I take away my hand From leaning on it hard In grass and sand, The hurt is not enough: I long for weight and strength To feel the earth as rough To all my length. “To Earthward” by Robert Frost exemplifies the concept of how attraction and love change over the years from youth to bitter love to a love that craves relief from the pain of life. Frost begins the poem’s first stanza with the lines “Love at the lips was touch/As sweet as I could bear”.  With this opening phrase Frost shows that youthful love is consumed with simple kissing......

...company, one has to keep employees happy and make them keep wanting to work. Employees are the backbone of your company, they are the ones who keep the company going; sure the executives have to make some big time decisions but for the most part the employees help run the company. Gary Kelley has kept Southwest traditions by the low fares and great customer service. That is what made Southwest what it is today. He then made a decision that I think changed Southwest in the best way, by making bags fly for free. All of the other airlines make you pay to check a bag. This new strategy greatly gained them customers. Southwest has always been known for its point-to-point flights, but in recent years airports like Houston Hobby and Dallas Love Field have become de facto hubs. Southwest had evolved over the years, it flies longer routes, it flies...

Southwest Case Analysis

...Southwest identified an opportunity within Texas for short distance air service between Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth and San Antonio. These Texas cities were often referred to as one single market area, although they were some of the fasted growing in the nation. Southwest recognized that Pacific Southwest Airlines had a similar business plan in California servicing Los Angeles to San Francisco, so they took this similar concept, and set their goals to provide quick, reliable service that local passengers sought to utilize. Within this Texas market included two other airlines, Braniff and TI. Both did not originally specialize in short distance air travel, and most short distance flights started at a larger location such as New York and traveled through the Texas cities as a multiple stop trip. Southwest’s choice to enter the market initiated a quick process to implement their strategy. Within 4 months, they would implement a marketing strategy and begin servicing the area. The problem with the Texas market was as soon as Southwest implanted a strategy and promotion, Braniff and TI would closely follow and form a very similar strategy. Southwest’s third phase of their advertising campaign led to Braniff once again matching the promotion that they are offering, and Southwest’s response to Braniff’s move would help establish southwest as a successful company. Within the Texas market, Southwest has created many strengths that will help set them apart from the current......

Twelfth Night

...Topic: Unspoken Love Quote 1 A. Viola (in her disguise as Cesario) comes to Olivia to deliver the speech Orsino has sent her to carry. It is his message of love for Olivia, however, Cesario sets aside the prepared message and proceeds to tell Olivia what he would do if he were in love with her. It sets the stage for Olivia to fall in love with Viola, yet dressed and known as the man Cesario. B. ”Make me a willow cabin at your gate And call upon my soul within the house, Write loyal cantons of contemnèd love, And sing them loud even in the dead of night; Hallow your name to the reverberate hills, And make the babbling gossip of the air Cry out ’Olivia!’ O, you should not rest Between the elements of air and earth But you should pity me.” (237-245) C.”Make me a cabin at your gate and call upon my heart within the house, Write loyal words of true love, And sing them loud even in the dead of night so all can hear, Hallow your name above the hills, And make the babbling gossip of the air cry out’ Olivia!’ O, you should not rest Between the elements of air and earth But you should pity me for my love for you is painfully never ending.” D. Viola (as Cesario) is stating that if she were Orsino, she would be outside Olivia’s gate night and day, proclaiming her love, until Olivia took “pity” on her for the strength of that love (as if she were Cesario). Fall

...and smelling the crisp fresh and cool air. Fall makes me so happy and I am anxious for it to come every single year. Everything during fall is absolutely wonderful, I love it! Some of the best times that I have had in my life, oddly occurred during the fall season; and I sometimes wonder if that may be part of the reason(s) that I cherish it so much. Fall is such a beautiful and blissful season; it is the best season of the year. Fall is so wonderful mainly because of the beautiful scenery it displays. Here in Arizona, the summers are very hot and dry, and it almost feels dreadful at times; but the fall here is absolutely beautiful. You can start to notice the transition into fall around mid- September because the mornings are sort of wet from the precipitation and you can feel the cool air gently fan across your whole entire body. Not only that, but later in September, the leaves start to turn into the beautiful array of sunburst orange, medallion yellow and cherry red, and when the leaves start to fall onto the cold hard ground, you can feel and hear the crunch of the leaves beneath your feet. The cool air is so crisp and refreshing; you can feel the slight wind of the cool air tingle your cheeks lightly. The weather is not to cold and not too warm, it is just the perfect measure of both. It is lovely. Not only is the sight of fall beautiful, the different aromas in the air are just as pleasing. Fall has such a unique smell in the air. It is a wonderful mixture of sweet......

Hierachy of Needs by Abraham Maslow

...Hierarchy of Needs motivational model Abraham Maslow developed the Hierarchy of Needs model in 1940-50s USA, and the Hierarchy of Needs theory remains valid today for understanding human motivation, management training, and personal development. Indeed, Maslow's ideas surrounding the Hierarchy of Needs concerning the responsibility of employers to provide a workplace environment that encourages and enables employees to fulfil their own unique potential are today more relevant than ever. While Maslow referred to various additional aspects of motivation, he expressed the Hierarchy of Needs in these five clear stages. 1. Biological and Physiological needs - air, food, drink, shelter, warmth, sex, sleep, etc. 2. Safety needs - protection from elements, security, order, law, limits, stability, etc. 3. Belongingness and Love needs - work group, family, affection, relationships, etc. 4. Esteem needs - self-esteem, achievement, mastery, independence, status, dominance, prestige, managerial responsibility, etc. 5. Self-Actualization needs - realizing personal potential, self-fulfillment, seeking personal growth and peak experiences. Maslow's hierarchy of needs is often portrayed in the shape of a pyramid with the largest, most fundamental levels of needs at the bottom and the need for self-actualization at the top. While the pyramid has become the de facto way to represent the hierarchy, Maslow himself never used a pyramid to describe these levels in any of his writings on......

Story of an Hour

...and resentment that partners are being taken advantage of.” The women of today are much stronger than those of the past. Women now are willing to fight for their freedom and take a stance on marriage. Kate Chopin’s, “The Story of an Hour’s,” main character Louise, died to escape from her lifestyle that she couldn’t end on her own simply due to the time period she was planted in. Chopin focus’s on the realization of true feelings toward marriage, the complexity of ones emotions, and the competition of whether to choose freedom over love, which elaborates on the factors of marriage and the measures an individual will take to experience the tangibility of freedom. Louise had her own idea of imagery that mirrored her desire for freedom. As she sat pondering in a room alone, she exposed herself to the open window that blew the fresh spring in air in, and the bitter aroma out. The window symbolizes the releasing of her feelings into the open air. The air was fresh like her life. Chopin states, “This would be Louise’s new beginning. Spring days, and summer days, would now be all hers” (300). Meanwhile,...

Thomas Hardy

...the present. At the beginning, their relationship was based on love, whereas as time passed, the woman changed from the one he had fallen in love with and so a loss of love occurs, which is one of the poem\'s themes. The present consists of the time after the woman has died when the speaker hears her voice, looks back at their time together and expresses a feeling of grief, regret, guilt, and loneliness. The author establishes a contrast between these particular moments through the use of several different devices. To begin with, the first moment is mostly presented in the second stanza. Unlike the other two, this moment of the couple\'s life was positive, which is shown by the phrase “when our day was fair” on the first stanza. It implies that at one point of their relationship, at the earlier times, their days were good, due to the presence of love. On the second stanza, the voice remembers their days of courtship in which he would drive near to the town where the woman waited for him. As he implores the woman to appear to him in the same place and wearing the same attire, a sense of longing and loneliness is created. This attire is described through the vivid visual image “original air-blue gown!” By connecting the color blue to the color of the air, actually referring to the sky, a positive connotation is given to the memory of this first moment, emphasizing the fact that those days were full of joy and love. The existance of an exclamation in that phrase conveys a......
