Love Poems
“Love” is possibly the most recurrent and controversial subject to be found in the world of poetry. Most of the greatest and highly prestigious poets have given expression to their ideas about love through their verses. This is, in fact, what makes a poem rich and original. Sharing the same topic, each poet is able to convey a different perspective of its implications. Each poet describes love in his own way and expresses his feelings and conceptions of love in a totally creative and innovative manner. “What is love?” “How does love affect a person’s life? How important are feelings? These are questions with endless answers and many writers have found their own way of responding them. Having said that, I will proceed to describe, compare and contrast three poems written by three different authors which share the same theme: Love. These are “Since Feeling is First”, by E.E. Cummings; “When you are old”, by William Butler Yeats; and “Sometimes with One I Love”, by Walt Whitman.
“Since Feeling is First” is a poem that deals with the importance of love and feelings over any other value in life. The narrator is concerned with placing the heart over the mind and states that feelings are more significant than wisdom. He claims that people should rely on their emotions to conduct their life instead of following the logic and order of things in a rational fashion. This idea is developed in the following lines:
“Since feeling is first who pays any attention to the syntax of things will never wholly kiss you”
“My blood approves, and kisses are a better fate than wisdom”
Clearly, the narrator considers that no matter the intellect or wisdom a person has, a simple sign of love or romance is far more valuable. For him, it is better to be a “fool for love” than practical and intelligent. In addition, it gives the idea that love occupies a place beyond life

Love in Poem

...Explore the ways that Barrett Browning and Duffy present love in their poems. Both the poets have different approach towards love, though they both share the same theme. Both the poets have penned their poems in different time frames, which would affect their style and manner of writing such as Barrett Browning using “thee” and “thine” opposed to the more modern and widely used “you” and “you’re” which is used by Carol Ann Duffy. Both Carol Ann Duffy and Barrett Browning utilize the themes of nature and religion to portray the power of love. In Carol Ann Duffy’s poem “Rapture”, she shows that love is natural by relating love to natural occurrences. She relates, “falling in love” to a “tiger”. By using the word tiger, she could mean two things: she could be saying that love is very strong, powerful and dangerous and has the capability to harm/kill, or she could be saying that love is rare and sudden and you cannot predict when it’ll hit you. As Duffy compares love to nature, it widens her definition of love as nature expresses the implications of being strong and powerful to the reader. This shows to the readers that Carol Ann Duffy has used nature as an example to show the power of love and how she interprets love throughout the relationship as her mood varies. This could also suggest that the author is connected and enjoys natural things such as the flowing of a river and the vastness of the “heavy sky”. By using the phrase “heavy sky”, the author uses personification to...

Egyptian Love Poems

...The Gateway between Poetry Sappho of Lesbos and Egyptian Love Poems share similarities but also have quite a few differences as well. Their themes and poetic styles in their works of poetry align in some ways, yet differ in others. They both have a sense of eroticism and passion within their works of poetry as well. Love songs or love poems are found in many cultures. Most of the love poems deal with intense emotion and a lust for life. Being able to analyze the roots of their existence can help to understand the context of the poetry all together. When we look at the history of Egyptian love poems they seem to parallel a lot with other near eastern traditions. Writing was quite significant in the Egyptian society as a means to convey cultural...

An Essay of Love (Three Poems Common Theme)

...Darwin Quinde Comp.Lit March 1, 2012 An Essay on love Love is a huge feeling that carries many other emotions along with it. The common theme on the poems “Love one another” by Khalil Gibran, “Meeting at night” by Robert Browning and “If you forget me” by Pablo Neruda is that love is more than just being next to the person that we love. In the three poems we see that love is the main theme but it is presents it in a different point of view in each one. In the poem “love one another” by Khalil Gibran the narrator talks about how individuality is important for relationships. The narrator tells the readers that love shouldn’t be rigid and inflexible in the first line of the poem “Don’t make a bond of love” because it could cause the end of a relationship. The tone of voice in this poem is a little persuasive. The narrator is trying to convince us that doing things together is good for a relationship but there should be things that people should do individuality. For instance, “Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone” demonstrates the narrator’s tone of voice and how people need their own time. The author uses imagery to show how love isn’t just about being together but it is also about knowing how to adapt to different situations in life. A perfect example of it is “Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.” Which demonstrate that love shouldn’t be rigid and not changing but instead passive and changing. The Narrators...

How Does Keats Present Love in His Poems?

...How does Keats present love in his poems? John Keats was born 1795, in London and was often claimed as one of the most important Romantic figures of the nineteenth century. He had many struggles in his life from his mother and brother dying from tuberculosis, to his poetry being constantly rejected and him running out of money. A lot of Keats’s themes were Romantic, such as the beauty of nature, the contrast of fantasy and reality and the relation of beauty to suffering. Though initially all Keats’s poems that present love seems to be portrayed contrastingly, really they’re actually revealed to be quite similar. Through numerous techniques, from the exploration of senses, to form to the different symbols and styles that Keats’s used to intertwining themes used to express the theme of love. However through all of Keats’s poems, he shares a sense of sacrifice and pain that deal with his idea of the eternal and fantasy world and how in exchange for immortality the lovers have to give up their human experiences and intimacy. In the ninth line of ‘Bright Star’ Keats reveals his desire to remain in the moment “Pillow’d upon [his] fair love’s ripening breast”. However in order to remain in this moment Keats has to sacrifice all his humans’ experiences to be immortal. In the final line of ‘Bright Star’ Keats writes “And so live ever—or else swoon to death”. Many have considered ‘Swoon’ to be an little death or an orgasm as towards the end of the poem the pace and rhythm increases...

Compare the Way Love Is Represented in ‘Ghazal’ with One Other Poem

...Compare the way love is represented in ‘Ghazal’ with one other poem ‘Love’ can be defined as a feeling of warm personal attachment or deep affection to something or someone. Poe believed that all good literature must create a unity of effect on the reader and this effect must reveal truth or evoke emotions. His work is admired as an excellent example of how a short story can produce an effect on the reader; much like how ‘Ghazal’ and ‘Hour’ produce an effect of love and pathos towards the characters. The poems ‘Ghazal’ by Mimi Khalvati and ‘Hour’ by Carol Ann Duffy are similar in many ways. Firstly, the structures of both include couplets; however ‘Hour’ is in a sonnet form with 3 quatrains and a couplet to finish, and ‘Ghazal’ has 10 couplets. This shows the reader immediately that both poems are of the theme of love. Also, this type of structure links to Shakespeare’s sonnets, as they have a similar, if not the same, structure. Additionally, the form of poetry that ‘Ghazal’ is one that is traditionally sung and deals with unattainable love. This form dates back to 7th century Arabia. Secondly, in the poem ‘Hour’ the poet presents love with the description of ‘time’s beggar’. The love talked about in this poem appears to be personified as a beggar. This may suggest that love wants more time to be with their other half. In addition, the poet redefines wealth as love and time rather than as money and gold. Carol Ann Duffy uses two fairytales, ‘Cinderella’ and ‘Rumplestiltskin’...

Egyptian Love Poems

...made sense of love 3 3. Girl, boy and society 4 4. 3 Themes of love prevalent in Love Songs 5 5. Conclusion 6 6. Work cited 7 1. Introduction During the time of ancient Egypt's New Kingdom, love songs were recorded and later discovered by excavators. The importances of these songs are that they contradicted the perception which Egyptologists had of the ancient Egyptians. No longer were the ancient Egyptians viewed as being a dull society, focused on death and the afterlife, but rather a society with a love for living through loving love itself (Fowler 1994:xiv). Thus, in this essay, through analyzing the Ramesside love songs, I shall explore this different view of the ancient Egyptians and attempt to understand what the concept of love truly meant to them. In going about this, I shall firstly look at how sense was made of the concept love and then look at love from the perspective of girls, boys and society. Furthermore, I shall address three themes regarding the concept of love, prevalent in the love songs and finally, conclude through drawing on my findings throughout my essay. 2. How they made sense of love When looking at ancient Egyptian religion, art and practices, two themes is consistent, this is the use of metaphors and similes. These were the methods used by the ancient Egyptians to not only explain their experiences, but also to validate them (Kaplan 2004:9). Similarly, metaphors and similes are regularly used in love songs to explain...

Compare Egyptian Love Poem and Clasical Chinese Poem

...indescribable by me. I say the stupidity they possessed because in those days the punishments passed and the reasoning for determining guilt was/is insulting to the brilliance of mankind.           I don't really have a favorite poem, but if I had to choose one, it would be "I wish I were a Nubian girl." I say that because of the way he described his desires and the mistress.  He was intuned to how the Nubian girl and the mistress interacted.  However, if he were the Nubian girl I dont believe he would be as enthusiastic because then he would be a girl and the scene itself would feel inappropriate.  If he were to ask the Nubian girl how she felt about being that, she may have a difference of opinion.  Having to bathe the mistress, having to cater to the mistress, having to feed the mistress, having to clothe the mistress without having the choice of doing so may not be as pleasant as it seems. And if she did enjoy it would that mean she was a man in a previous life only to have come back as a Nubian girl to acheive the purpose he had in mind? Who knows...      Anyhow, the poem shows that even though the men showed the greatest of respect for women, in secret they kept a dirty mind. I wish I were her Nubian girl” is actually pretty disturbing. Basically, this short poem is about the poet wanting to be the slave of his beloved (when the...

Rizal: Hidden Beneath the Surface

...Nikki Vanessa V. Novales July 20, 2012 # 2012-42443 PI 10 E2-6R Rizal: Hidden Beneath The Surface A Reaction Paper On “Bayaning 3rd World” “Who is Rizal?” If you ask this question to any Filipino, they will most likely say, “He is our national hero” Or “He’s the person stamped on our 1-peso coin”. But is that all he really is? The movie “Bayaning 3rd World” is about two film makers trying to make a movie about Rizal. They found out, however, that this would not be an easy task, for their subject is a very complicated man. Rather than focusing on a single issue about Rizal, they decided to make a detective story about Rizal being the country’s national hero. They tackled several issues but focused mainly on Rizal’s retraction and Josephine Bracken. The movie was meant to be educational, but unlike most documentaries, “Bayaning 3rd World” is definitely not boring. The documentary was presented in a comical way, so that viewers of all ages would be able to understand it and grasp its meaning. I was confused at first because I didn’t know what the “Retraction Controversy” was and the two film makers started having these long conversations about it without explaining it to the viewers. But when I found out what it was all about, following the flow of the story became easy. Another controversy that arose was about Josephine Bracken, on whether she and Rizal were married or not. It was implied that if they were indeed married, then Rizal retracted...

William Shakespear

...the court’s taste—to the fashionable modes of Ovid, Petrarch, and Neoplatonism—and to the need for patronage. Although the power of the sonnets goes far beyond their sociocultural roots, Shakespeare nevertheless adopts the culturally inferior role of the petitioner for favor, and there is an undercurrent of social and economic powerlessness in the sonnets, especially when a rival poet seems likely to supplant the poet. In short, Shakespeare’s nondramatic poems grow out of and articulate the strains of the 1590’s, when, like many ambitious writers and intellectuals on the fringe of the court, Shakespeare clearly needed to find a language in which to speak—and that was, necessarily, given to him by the court. What he achieved within this shared framework, however, goes far beyond any other collection of poems in the age. Shakespeare’s occasional poems are unquestionably minor, interesting primarily because he wrote them; his sonnets, on the other hand, constitute perhaps the language’s greatest collection of lyrics. They are love lyrics, and...

Edgar Allan Poe And The Macabre

...His preference for short literary works shows it’s obvious he did not “gamble” like the rest of his fellow writers, such as his innovation of connecting art and environment. Recent critics have focused on his literary method; Poe has tackled the problem of a pieces of work relying so heavily on risque elements. Poe is known as “The Father of the Macabre,” as he is a “skilled craftsman of grotesque tales and romantic fantasies,” (shaping many into one). However, Poe was more than a horror story and poem writer, in fact his oeuvre includes editor, literary critic, satirist, hoaxer, mystery writer, pioneer in the Sci-Fi (science-fiction) genre, poet, and playwright. Poe created an “aesthetic theory, setting the basis to American scepticism through the first person narrative, “ (shaping many into one). Poes’ had a connection to the American culture and improved upon American literature through his philosophy of composition, celebrating a liaison between artistic autonomy and productivity, mainly prose fiction. he also believes that “the power of words expresses the concept of endless productivity,” (poe...
