The strongest word we all recognize is Love. Although Susan Griffin in the poem “Love Should Grow Up Like a Wild Iris in the Fields” Griffin explains how the humans put a whole new meaning too this word LOVE. The main concept of this poem is about Love and how we think love should be against reality. The use of multiple literary elements in this poem helps us understand the importance of true love by using imagery, and symbolism which helps the reader understand that love is easier said than done. Susan Griffin uses imagery all throughout the poem too aid the reader actually imagine the situation. Imagery on “the iris” a flower that grows, then “unexpectedly” blooms. Love isn’t something simple as just saying I love you and getting roses all the time and everything being all perfect. The “iris (eye)” is another concept of imagery, it only can be seen in the dark when its alone, love is only seen when everything else we need too do is done, and when all our worries are over with (32). It is then that we can truly come in contact with love Another great aspect of this poem is symbolism one symbol is the Iris which symbolizes the promise to love. Even once the Iris dies with the weather it comes back again.
It just like true love with never truly die out. “Ignorant of the grass and the graveyard leaves”, these leaves that smother out the Iris will not keep it from growing again (4). Nothing can truly smother out true love, it will still remain there. Another symbol with the Iris is referring to the human eye. It is what we see with, yet it’s also what causes us to be blind. (Griffin)consisting of cleaning chores and family can cause stress and also be another blinder of love Dinnertime is often depicted as “time with family”, but Griffin shadows that line with, “tired out and hungry” making sure the reader gets a negative implication
