My greatest accomplishment would have to be the birth of my son. When I first learned that I was pregnant, my medical ailments concerned me. I had a high-risk pregnancy as well as other medical conditions that gravely threatened the life of my unborn child. I did some extensive research on the statistics of my medical situation, as it concerned my pregnancy. Statistically, my son had an 85% chance of contracting my medical conditions through child labor/vaginal delivery. I did my best in the following months to be proactive rather than reactive about my situation. I took all the necessary medications, and I went to every doctor’s appointment. I also took every test my doctors wanted to perform. When it was time to give birth, I had a healthy seven pound four ounce precious baby boy. A week after birth, my son, Holligan suffered a mild seizure and was admitted to Children's Hospital. My son spent the next six months of his life in the N.I.C.U. (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) and was diagnosed with Micrognathia (abnormally small chin) and Microglossia (severely small tongue). These diagnoses came from birth defects not related to my medical condition. When children are born, they live off their mother's antibodies for approximately eighteen months. These are antibodies that are already built up in the child’s system at birth. Every three months (from birth to his second birthday) my son was multiple comprehensive given blood test to check for detection of any health risk. He was also given medicine to counteract the health risk if present in his system. On July 24th 2008, my son was given his final test clearing him of all health conditions. My son’s life is the best thing I have ever accomplished. I celebrate him daily. This accomplishment was not easy to deal with. The toughest obstacle was the lack of health insurance. I paid for my medications, doctors’ visits, and lab work out of pocket. This expense became very costly quickly. With every ongoing week, the financial burden of my treatment became overwhelmingly stressful. Due to my high-risk pregnancy, I was unable to take on any additional job that required manual labor. I was able to find a lucrative online data entry job that I could perform from home. Having this additional source of income while waiting on my health insurance ensured my ability to receive the necessary treatment for my now eight year old son.
