Is Fasting the Best Way of Diet?

...» April 22, 2011 — Ritual fasting has been part of religious traditions for thousands of years, from Muslims who fast during daylight hours in the month of Ramadan to Mormons who take a regular break from food the first Sunday of each month. But a recent growing body of research shows that abstaining from food intermittently may have physical as well as spiritual benefits — the latest, a study from Utah researchers that found that occasional fasts (defined as extended periods of time in which people generally abstain from all food and drink except for water) may reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes. Google “fasting for health” and you’ll get more than 7 million hits, ranging from doctors who recommend it in their practices to treat a range of diseases, spas that promise detoxifying food-free vacations, and message board postings from devotees who say that fasting makes them feel clearer mentally and more fit. “I fast whenever my body feels like it needs a reboot,” says Yoli Ouiya, 31, a New York City blogger who writes about eco-friendly living. She fasts once every few months. But is fasting a good idea for your health? Possibly, says David Katz, MD, MPH, director of the Prevention Research Center at Yale University. Every day, organs such as the liver, kidney, and spleen work to remove and neutralize toxins from the body to keep our cells healthy. “When you fast, you eliminate input of additional toxins from food,” says Dr. Katz, “and there is a potential......

Alternative Cancer Treatments

...Alternative Cancer Treatments According to “Centers for Disease Control and Prevention” (2013), “Each year globally, 12.7 million people learn they have cancer, and 7.6 million people die from the disease” (para. 1). Cancer treatments can be affective, depending on the type and level of the cancer. Doctors often offer different treatment options to patients. Most of these treatments include medications that can affect the body in a harmful way in attempt to kill the cancer. Many patients are starting to look for alternative treatments. There are no conventional or alternative treatments guaranteed to cure a patient from cancer. A major concern about alternative treatments is its use as a false lure to a cure. Although there is no cure for cancer, alternative treatments may prove to be helpful along with conventional treatment as cancer becomes more common. To understand how alternative treatments can assist cancer patients along with their conventional treatments, we must first ask what cancer is, and how it can affect the human body. According to “National Cancer Institute” (2013), “Cancer is a term used for diseases in which abnormal cells divide without control and are able to invade other tissues” (para. 1). As cancer cells continue to divide, they can also spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymph systems. These abnormal cells can cause some major issues throughout the body. A broad spectrum of non-specific cancer symptoms can include a......

Popa” University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Iasi 2 Children’s Emergency Hospital “Sf. Maria”, Iasi 3 Hiperclinica Medlife, Iasi ABSTRACT Vegetarianism may have implications on the growth of children and adolescents. There are different types of vegetarian diets: some may be suitable for children, other deficient in essential nutrients. If a vegetarian diet is done properly and includes fortified foods it can promote health and reduce risk for major chronic diseases. Restriction or exclusion of products of animal nature can lead to low intake of essential nutrients. Keywords: vegetarianism, child Childhood is the period when nutritional habits are acquired, when growth is intense and when deposits of essential nutrients are stored. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, vegetarianism is defined by “the consumption of a diet that contains vegetables, fruits, nuts, cereals and sometimes eggs and dairy products” (1). Vegetarianism may have severe implications on the growth of children and adolescents, therefore it is necessary to assess the nutritional status of vegetarians to insure optimum growth and a good health state and to prevent potential deficits. ...into their diets. Pesco vegetarians add fish into their diets, and Pollo vegetarians eat poultry such as chicken, duck, game, and birds. Pollo vegetarians exclude omit red meat out of their diets. There are many health benefits of a vegetarian lifestyle. As said by the Harvard Women’s Health Watch in Should I Become a Vegetarian?, “If you stop eating red meat, you’ll eliminate a risk factor for colon cancer… if you eat more fruits and vegetables, you’ll gain some protection against cancer.” And, “…vegetarians are 24% less likely to die of coronary heart disease.” There is a long list of the benefits of a vegetarian diet. It is mainly because being on a vegetarian diet reduces a lot of cholesterol, and saturated fats, which, come from animal origin. It’s no secret that a low-fat diet that is high in fruits and veggies is beneficial and that a vegetarian diet can help get that. But is it really what’s best for children? After all, children need a well balanced meal with plenty of protein for proper growth. Can they get that on a vegetarian diet? What about vegetarianism during pregnancy and breast-feeding? There are many known benefits of the vegetarian lifestyle in adults, but most of these are unknown in children. This paper will begin to answer these questions. Children have nutritional needs greater than that of adults. A poor diet can have long-lasting effects that can last their entire lives. As TAB Sanders and Sheela Reddy say in Vegetarian Diets and......

Veganism

...There are a couple of health benefits for people who are vegan. The benefits of being a vegan are decreases in diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and lower mortality rates (Boston University 2016). Studies have shown that the risk of diabetes was about twice as high for non-vegans than the people that are vegan. The reason for this is because vegans usually have lower body weights than non-vegans (Boston University 2016). Studies have also shown that the people who chose to be vegan increases the chance to prevent cancer than the people who eat red meat. Mostly because vegans have a large intake of legumes, which helps prevent cancer cells (Boston University 2016). Veganism could lower your chance of cardiovascular disease because a diet of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and nuts allows people to have lower cholesterol levels, higher fiber content, lower blood pressure levels and lower chances of...

Going Vegetarian

...restaurants in the United States offer vegetarian choices. Although being a vegetarian can be challenging, the benefits outweigh the burdens. Today, there are many healthy, vegetarian choices in restaurants around the world. For example, apples and yogurt can even be found at McDonalds! “Farmer’s Weekly” says that not only is a vegetarian diet healthy but it also helps cut greenhouse gases, conserve water, and conserve land. Today, many people are trying to become eco-friendly and don’t know what they can do to help. Giving up meat is a healthy choice for you, for the animals, and it could even help solve world hunger. Many people, when they think of becoming vegetarian, wonder how they are going to get enough protein and iron in their diet. According the book, The Case for Vegetarianism, people are mistaken in thinking that protein comes from animals. Protein actually comes from plant food, meaning that all animals get protein through the food they eat. When trying to figure out what foods have protein, whole grains, beans, nuts, eggs, and peas are all high in protein, as well as all dairy products. To be the healthiest, one’s diet should include a variety of whole foods. Excess protein actually puts stress on the liver and kidney and is also linked with calcium loss. As for iron, women who eat meat have thicker uterine tissues and higher estrogen levels in their blood, causing them to have heavier and longer menstrual cycles; so vegetarian women are......

Abstract The worshiping of a higher power within the Jehovah Witnesses, Hinduism and Taoism are all very strong. The body is very sacred when death has occurred; many practices take place along with many rituals. The comparison between Christianity and the Baptist sect of the Christian faith is somewhat different, in a myriad of ways. Food is not such a priority within the Baptist religion and our values are prioritized in a different way. In this religion healthcare is respected in a way that the word from a physician is not doubted as much as the other religions. The past of medicine is not really accepted, we now consider what is the new, latest and greatest for our family members, whereas the other three religions value cultural rituals and elder’s knowledge for their own healing purposes. Introduction Within this paper, the primary topics of discussion concern themselves with three different religions, and the different ways they handle medical care and treatment. Approach to Care

...Cancer is known by the abnormal growth of cells that is uncontrolled in the body, and these cells are also defined as malignant cells, meaning that these cells are severe and can become worse. Cancerous cells can grow very rapidly and aim to destroy healthy cells and tissue. The primary cells that are affected by these tumor cells will break away and travel to other healthy tissue and cells via the lymphatic or circulatory system, which metastasis most often to the lungs, brain, liver, and bones. When a person is diagnosed with cancer, it can be very devastating news, with the fear that this could possibly be rapidly progressed or worse, incurable. Therefore, this affects greatly not only the person who is diagnosed, but also family and friends who are close and care for this person. At one time, cancer was almost always considered a death sentence, however, with the progression of research, new treatments, cures, and early diagnosis can now help to prevent re-occurrence or in some cases can put the cancer into remission for years. With the extensive research throughout the years, advancements have been made bringing about new treatment options, the ability to detect some types of cancers earlier, and also to understand how many environmental factors, as well as genetics, can affect the growth of cancerous cells. There are multiple types of cancers based off of where the cancer originates in regards to the types of tissues or kinds of fluids that the cancer......

...English Contents ABOUT THIS BOOK ................................5 THE WORDS.............................................7 WORD ANALYSIS ...............................103 IDIOM AND USAGE ............................117 About This Book English offers perhaps the richest vocabulary of all languages, in part because its words are culled from so many languages. It is a shame that we do not tap this rich source more often in our daily conversation to express ourselves more clearly and precisely. There are of course thesauruses but they mainly list common words. Other vocabulary books list difficult, esoteric words that we quickly forget or feel self-conscious using. However, there is a bounty of choice words between the common and the esoteric that often seem be just on the tip of our tongue. Vocabulary 4000 brings these words to the fore. Whenever possible, one-word definitions are used. Although this makes a definition less precise, it also makes it easier to remember. Many common words appear in the list of words, but with their less common meanings. For example, the common meaning of champion is “winner.” A less common meaning for champion is to support or fight for someone else. (Think of the phrase “to champion a cause.”) This is the meaning that would be used in the list. As you read through the list of words, mark any that you do not know with a check mark. Then when you read through the list again, mark any that you do not remember with two checks. Continue in......
