...What are Prions and their role? Prions are the proteins that cause Mad Cow Disease also known as BSE. Prions are an infectious protein. Prions are defined as an proteinaceous infectious particle, the protein is capable of changing the conformation of proteins to match its own and becomes infectious without the use of genetic materials. They can cross between species such as cattle, and sheep. Extreme heats chemical agents can inactivate the proteins. Prions are naturally occurring in the body and are not considered foreign nor do they stimulate the immune system and will not hurt your body, however the disease causing prions contact the normal prions by physical contact and alter the normal prions therefore causing the disease. With Mad Cow Disease The Prions target the specific protein in the cell that is normal called PrPC The role of protein Misfolding in BSE Diseased proteins result from improper folding and therefore the misfolded proteins induces copies of the same protein to also again misfold and increases the disease progress when it is misfolded. The scrapie prion PrPsc contacts and bumps into the normal cellular form PrPc intermediate and shifts the folding process converting them to the misfolded prion (the sheep version of mad cow disease called the PrPsc prion). The process continues over and over again. The body continues producing the normal cell PrPc and the scrapie prion PrPsc continues creating more replications of itself without needing any nucleic...

Mad Cow Disease

...Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), better know as Mad cow disease is a relatively new disease. Most sources state that BSE first showed up in Great Britain in 1986 [Dealler p.5] but some say it popped up in 1985 [Greger p.1]. However the official notification was not until 21 June, 1988 [Dealler stats. p.1]. Spongiform encephalopathies are invariable fatal neurodegenerative diseases and there is no treatment nor is there a cure for this disease [Greger p.1]. The recent scare of BSE has arisen because of the contraction of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD: see Appendix B) in humans from eating beef products. Although there are many forms of Spongiform encephalopathies that affect a wide range of animals, BSE has received the most attention because many people in the world consume beef and people are that they might contract the disease from eating a burger at their favourite fast-food restaurant. In this essay I will discuss BSE and other forms of Spongiform encephalopathies, how it affects the ani mal, what causes the animals to contract the disease, and the recent issues of BSE in the world. I hope to set out the true facts about BSE and that it only affects a small percent of the world population. Due to the fact BSE is a new disease most of my information might be proven wrong in the future because there is a great deal of testing going on in the scientific community. They are also very concerned about this new disease and the effects it can have on...

Mad Cow Disease Research Paper

...certain disease that makes people suspiciously zombie-like. This disease is called mad cow disease. There have always been a number of diseases and disorders that can turn a person violent, but they were also never contagious, until humans discovered mad cow disease. When a person becomes infected there are several symptoms that sound suspiciously zombie-like. Some of the symptoms related to mad cow disease include, muscle twitches, delirium, changes in how the infected person walks. If mad cow disease were to get out of control and turned our delirium into rage, and could be transmitted by blood, then humans could be just a bite away from a zombie apocalypse. Mad cow disease is a prion that affects cows. When someone ingests the infected meat they have a chance of getting the disease. It affects the...

Mad Cow Diseases: What Makes The Cattle Slaughter

...I found it interesting that the farmers use “drugs” to make the cattle bigger, before they are slaughtered. I disagree with this because I think the cow should just grow normally without any drugs. What happens to the people who drink the cow's milk? Would the drugs that was put in the cows be in the milk that is fed to humans? - Chapter 5 Another thing I found interesting is that sometimes cattle are fed other cattle parts. The farmers fed the other cattle old scraps because the cow’s needed protein. In 1997 the government banned the practice because people in England were dying of mad cow disease. Mad cow disease is a fatal brain disease. People or cows can get it from eating the brains of infected animals. Disgusting right? - Chap 5 pg 69...

Marketing Grid

...levels. The first is its level of growth within the market, while the second measures its market share relative to the competition within its industry. To help businesses further analyze its assets, the matrix divides the business units or products into four categories, including: Stars: The business units or products that have the best market shares and generate the most cash are considered stars. However, because of their high growth rate, stars also consume large amounts cash. This generally results in the same amount of money coming in that is going out. Stars can eventually become cash cows if they sustain their success until a time that the market growth rate declines.  Cash cows: Cash cows are the leader in the marketplace and generate more cash than they consume. These are business units or products that have a high market share, but a low growth prospects. According to NetMBA, cash cows provide the cash required to turn question marks into market leaders, to cover the administrative costs of the company, to fund research and development, to service the corporate debt, and to pay dividends to shareholders. Dogs: Business units or products that are dogs are those have both a low market share and low growth rate.  They don't earn a lot of cash, nor do they consume a lot. Most likely these aspects of a business are making little, if any money. Dogs are generally considered cash traps...

Business

...The BCG Matrix, the Growth-Share Matrix and Portfolio Analysis If you enjoy vivid visual metaphors for business, then you'll love the Boston Matrix! Also called the BCG Matrix, it provides a useful way of screening the opportunities open to you, and helps you think about where you can best allocate your resources to maximize profit in the future. Understanding the Model Market Share and Market Growth To understand the Boston Matrix, you need to understand how market share and market growth interrelate. Market share is the percentage of the total market that is being serviced by your company, measured either in revenue terms or unit volume terms. The higher your market share, the higher the proportion of the market you control. The Boston Matrix assumes that if you enjoy a high market share you will be making money. (This assumption is based on the idea that you will have been in the market long enough to have learned how to be profitable, and will be enjoying scale economies that give you an advantage). The question it asks is, "Should you be investing additional resources into a particular product line just because it is making you money?" The answer is, "not necessarily." This is where market growth comes into play. Market growth is used as a measure of a market's attractiveness. Markets experiencing high growth are ones where the total market is expanding, meaning that it’s relatively easy for businesses to grow their profits, even if their market share remains stable...

...1) Star | Problem child | Cash cow | Dog | SnapchatWhatsApp | KakaoTalk | Facebook | WeChat | 2) Facebook – Cash cows are products or services that have achieved market leader status and provide positive cash flows. These products produce profits long after cash back is achieved. By generating steady streams of income, cash cows help fund the overall growth of a company. They (like Facebook) usually bring in cash for years, until new technology or shifting market preferences renders them obsolete. This is why I put Facebook at cash cow because it has all these features. Snapchat - Stars are high growth products competing in markets where they are strong compared with the competition. Often Stars need heavy investment to sustain growth. Eventually growth will slow and, assuming they keep their market share, Stars will become Cash Cows. Snapchat is still growing so is in the Star stage but will eventually join Facebook in cash cow 3) WeChat will be facing some facors that are causing a threat to the success of it. One of these factors is that WeChat is not growing. WeChat is based in China which can be a good thing as there are so many people living in china however over time when everyone in China has tired WeChat the demand for it will no longer grow and demand will fall rapidly so they need to expand to other countries like apps such as Facebook has done in order to continue growing and no face a massive problem in the years to come. The second factor is the growing...

Alice Video

...successfully it into a cartoon in 1951.      In this video clip we can see Alice seeing Mad Hatter and March Hare in a tea party, all though there are many chairs and tables, there were no one except them. Alice also wanted to join  the tea party with them, but when Mad Hatter and March Hare saw her, they said her that’s there's no room for her ,although there were plenty of space .Then Alice apologized and said she enjoyed very much their singing and praised March Hare and Mad Hatter. Then they accepted her in to the party, Alice said it's a very enjoyable Birthday Party, but then said it's not a birthday party, but an unbirthday party, but Alice didn’t understand it, then they explained her what's an unbirthday is. Then they got to know that it's an unbirthday of Alice too. So, they celebrate it by singing a song. Then Mad hatter takes out a cake out of his hat. When Alice blew the candle, it goes p like a firework, and Dormouse comes out of it and he’s falling with the aid of a little umbrella, singing Twinkle,Twinkle. By watching this video, we can obviously see that how successful Disney was, converting the novel into a cartoon. The expressions and acts of the characters that can be seen it this video, show us a great humor which sometimes we can’t get by reading a text. Mad Men 1

...Mad Men Season 1 Episode 1 has many scenes, which convey different themes in the show. One scene in particular depicts non-Jewish characters, discussing Jews. The scene, which takes place between Don Draper and Roger Sterling in Draper’s office, was one that really caught my attention. I was a bit annoyed by the conversation that took place between Draper and Sterling. Clearly these men are not Jewish, yet they are carrying on about Jews like it is some bad thing to be a Jew. “Have we ever hired any Jews?” -Sterling “Not on my watch.”- Draper “Sorry most of the Jewish guys work for the Jewish firms.”- Draper “I know, … make them feel more comfortable.”- Sterling “Want me to run down to the Deli and grab somebody?”- Draper The pieces of dialogue above are excerpts from their conversation. When Draper says, “Not on my watch,” it is clear that he is attaching a negative connotation to being Jewish. Then, he highlights a Jewish stereotype when he asks if he should, “run down to the deli and find one.” In this time period of the late 50’s and early 60’s Jews were not well liked, especially by wealthy Christian businessmen. There is a vivid attitude that is shown towards Jews throughout the entire series of Mad Men. The fact that the men don’t even know if they have any Jews working there is insulting. Later in the episode, Sterling gets a Jew from the mailroom to sit in on the client meeting to “make them feel more comfortable.” Overall, the negative connotation that...

Mad World

...Sarah Bonkowski Brian Heaney ENG 1112 August 26, 2014 Mad World The song Mad World by Gary Jules is about existence. He realizes that there is no point in existence and that life is just very trivial. Gary Jules sees the world as worn out, dry, and wonders if its really worth it. Children are completely oblivious to the outside world. During the time when a child feels so excited about an event that an adult finds almost insignificant, they display true ignorance and obliviousness. The singer yearns to be a child and have such mentalities, but as he cannot, he sees no reason to exist. Lyrically the song is pretty loose. It throws together a lot of different images to paint a picture without saying anything specific about the world. He starts the song off with “All around me are familiar faces, Worn out places, worn out faces. Bright and early for their daily races, going nowhere, going nowhere. Their tears are filling up their glasses. No expression, no expression. Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow, no tomorrow, no tomorrow” (line 1-8). The familiar faces, worn out places, and worn out faces indicate that he has seen all their is to see, and that to him, all faces look the same, worn out and tired of life. If one considers the commute from home to work, at the end of the day its just the same cycle over again the next day. He continues to wonder where life is really going. When he sings bright and early for their daily races, going nowhere, he means the daily races...

Alice in Wonderland Essay

...Xxxxxxx 1 xxx xxxxxx DRAFT xxxxx xxxxxx Composition and Literature February 3, 2016 Want a good laugh? Want to retreat from the seriousness of life? If so, read The Adventures of Alice in Wonderland, written by Lewis Carroll. Alice follows a rabbit down a hole and escapes to a crazy world full of talking animals, living playing cards and disappearing smiling cats. Often literature that is so far off from real life, it trying to symbolize problems with the real world. maybe not. If Lewis Carroll doing this in Alice? Perhaps, but The popular scene in chapter 5 at the Mad Hatter’s tea party shows 3 themes that could symbolize something in real life. Three possible symbolic themes from the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party include: nonsense, rudeness, and meanness. Nonsense is used without the book, but at the tea party. Toward the end of the party the March Hare tells Alice to take the some more tea. She replies that she can’t take more because she hasn’t had any yet. The Hatter jumps in and replies “ You can’t take less, it is very easy to take more than nothing.” That was obviously a nonsense statement. Another nonsense part of the tea party is when they are talking about the purpose of a watch. After Alice points out how strange March Hare’s watch is in that is tells the day of the month but not the time, the Hatter jumps in and asks “Why should it? Does your watch tell what year it is?” Alice tries to explain that a year lasts a long time and you...
