Have you ever known someone full of conceit, envy, and ungratefulness? Madame Loisel, the main character from the short story, "The Necklace" by Gary de Maupassant, expresses all three of these traits. Madame Loisel is a lower middle class citizen but she wishes to live a upper class life. One day, her wish cm true and she and her husband got to attend an extravagant ball. Loisel had borrowed a diamond necklace from a wealthy friend for this occasion, but loses it. She doesn't confess her mistake and spent the remainder of her life in debt, trying to make up for losing the necklace. Madame Loisel is a vain, invidious, thankless character who is guided by her emotions, which makes her a believable character.
The audience could tell from the beginning of the story that Madame Loisel is a conceited character. For example, when her husband got her an invitation to the ball, she didn't thank him, but instead felt sorry for herself because she didn't own any fancy clothes. This shows that Loisel does not care about other people's feelings and is only focused on her needs and desires. She puts herself as her first priority, which happens often in reality. Madame Loisel overlooks her life and is ungrateful for what she has. Others can relate to Loisel because many people aren't grateful for their blessings until they lose them, like Madame Loisel did. When Madame Loisel had to pay back the debt from the diamond necklace, she lost everything she took for granted. This can easily happen to all of us, we just don't but that perspective into mind because we are constantly looking for something better. Being appreciative for what we have can improve character greatly because it shows that you don't take your blessings for granted, and you treat your life
