Made in the U.S.A-
Dumped in Brazil, Africa, Iraq…
In an uncertain world, capital budgeting attempts to determine what the future of a new product will bring and how then to act on that forecast. We never know for certain what the future will bring, but we do arrive at some idea of what the distribution of possible outcomes looks like. Unfortunately, when there is uncertainty, the outcome is not always a good one. For example, what happens if the government rules that our product is not safe? The answer is that we must abandon the product. The question then becomes what to do with the inventory we currently have on hand. We certainly want to deal with it in a way that is in the best interests of our shareholders. We also want to obey the law and act ethically. As with most ethical questions, there is not necessarily a right or wrong answer. The Case of ‘Made in The U.S.A.- Dumped in Brazil, Africa, Iraq…’ brings up the controversial issues of dumping, a term that refers to the practice of exporting to other countries products that have been banded or declared hazardous in the United States. Is it moral to dump U.S. banned products overseas? Both the manufactures and the consumers have valid arguments. As a consumer of these dangerous products being dumped on overseas markets one could argue the manufacturers lack of respect for life. It should be in the company’s best interest to take in consideration the health and safety of people and animals. These manufactures are knowingly making dangerous and even deadly products available to communities in third world countries. DowElanco sold its weed killer Galant in Costa Rica, although the Environmental Protection Agency forbade its sale to U.S. farmers because Galant may cause cancer. These companies need to take in consideration the burden/ benefit factor; the safety of others should be more important than the

The company was started five years ago in Nashville, TN, and has seen steady growth in the United States. Narcissus Denim currently fabricates its denim jeans in the USA, with only some of the materials coming from China. The cost of raw materials and manufacturing domestically have become too expensive, so Narcissus needs look outside of the USA. Narcissus is aware of other creators of designer apparel that have gotten bad press for using the “Made in the USA” label because the brands only make a portion each piece of their apparel in the USA. The purpose of this memorandum is to examine the possibility of bringing to the USA neighbor by working with “Maquiladora”, the Spanish word for manufacturer, in Mexico. Aspects of US law, international legal implications, as well as the ethical implications of moving this portion of the company to Mexico are the primary focus areas of research. Domestic Legal and Ethical Implications: Narcissus Denim was founded and gained success because of the quality of the product, in great part because the apparel is “made in the USA”. In order to create a portion of the product in Mexico and keep the “made in the USA” label, Narcissus Denim must ensure at least a portion of jeans be manufactured in the United...

American Haitian Relief Efforts and Flaws

...January 20th the US military has 2,000 troops on the ground assisting now with another 2,000 airborne personal on the way there. An additional 9,500 personal are afloat standing by nearby.” (Haiti Earthquake Facts, 1). Meaning that within a little over one week the US had nearly 13,500 military personnel lending a hand, not to mention the extreme amounts of donations that were made as well. Based on his text, “ If You Rebuild It, They Will Come”, author Paul Shirley would disagree with the previously stated statistics. In his text, he strongly expresses the importance of limiting the relief for Haiti. He then continues to argue that it is harmful to give them the amount of relief we are putting forth. Extending Shirley’s argument, the article published in USA Today, “Help Haitians, but Don’t Throw Open U.S. Borders”, explores the process of bringing suffering Haitians to America for a better life. It argues the negatives to this proposal, suggesting it not only hurts Haiti, but America as well. In this essay I will analyze both texts and the arguments they make, exploring how the article published in USA Today extends Shirley’s, further proving, clarifying and backing his argument. In his article, Shirley expresses his opinion on the importance of limiting the relief in Haiti. He makes claims throughout his text suggesting that the US is giving too much time and overbearing effort, that we are being to controlling, “It simply does not work to give unconditionally. What might...

With a staff growing over 16,000 Nestle USA has a total gross of $8 billion per year and is still increasing to this day. Why decide to use ERP implementation SAP? During the 1990’s, Nestle USA companies were operating as independents and were selling their vanilla product that was purchased from the same vendor 29 different prices. This became a concerning issue with the CIO and therefore something had to be done. In the year of 1997 the company made the decision to “standardize” their software systems to be all of one unit between its seven different divisions. In order to standardize the system, Nestle USA decided that the SAP modules would be based on: financials, sales and distributing, purchasing, accounts payable and accounts receivable. With these five SAP modules and using the Manugistic’s supply chain model, Nestle USA knew that implementing this ERP would take time but also benefit them in the long run. What issues may have caused concern with using the SAP model? During the phase of planning, the company realized that Y2K was soon approaching which caused a lot of worry in trying to get the standard software to be moved prior...

Cold War Breakdown in Alliances

...To what extent were rival ideologies responsible for the breakdown of the relationship between the two superpowers between 1945 and 1949? It was the Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan that really split Europe and made the concept of an Iron Curtain permanent during 1947/8. It was the final breakdown of the Allied cooperation over Germany that led to tensions and permanent divisions in the centre of Europe in 1948/9 as witnessed by the Berlin blockade and Allied airlift.  It was the explosion of the Soviet atom bomb and American membership of NATO that created a bi-polar nuclear world during and after 1949. rival ideologies Under President Woodrow Wilson the US had committed itself to liberal internationalism, which promoted democracy and the free enterprise system, while the communist emphasis was upon a world wide class revolution to bring about the socialist future. These conflicting views were less important in the 1920s and 1930s because the Soviet Union was a weak military power and the main threat seemed to come from the right wing ideology of Fascism. However the defeat of these powers by 1945 reopened the ideological sense of difference between the Americans and Russians. hard line anti-Russian views became more influential in Washington by 1945 and George Kennan’s famous “Long Telegram” in 1946 also reinforced the idea that the communists were ideologically hostile to US interests and needed to be contained. Although...

Use the Sources Below and Your Own Knowledge to Explain How Far You Would Agree with the Statement That the Cold War Developed in the Years 1945 to 1953 Primarily Due to the Role of Individual Leaders?

...role of individual leaders? The term ‘Cold War’ refers to the period of struggle and conflict between the USA and USSR between 1945-1991. Each of the Superpowers saw the other as a threat to its continued survival and adopted strategies to preserve their positions. The two Superpowers never went to war directly with each other in this period, but became involved in conflicts such as the Korean War where each side stood behind the other nations involved. This statement suggests that the ever-increasing hostility between the USA and USSR during this time period was due to actions from Truman and Stalin respectively. I agree with this statement to a certain extent, however, there are certain flaws with this statement, in that it was not wholly the fault of the two leaders as individuals but more due to certain events and the manor of poor cooperation with which the dealt with them. Two factors in favor of this statement are the beliefs and attitudes of Stalin and Truman. Stalin’s fear of the USA led him to believe that the USSR needed a barrier of territory between Soviet territory and the USA’s allies in Western Europe. Stalin feared another anti-communist invasion of Russia from Europe as had occurred in 1918 and 1941. Stalin wanted to create a barrier against the West, a barrier made up of communist run countries in Eastern Europe. The new president of the USA, Truman, saw Soviet domination of Eastern Europe not as an act of defense on Stalin’s part, but as an act of aggression...

He said that TEK USA was required by the lease agreement to notify Argus if any portion of rights were assigned to a third party and if the notice of assignment has been send by TEK USA, So Argus had made a mistake and if not so TEK USA will be responsible. so Susan took TEK USA contract file and saw the agreement. she was surprised to see the invoice generated by TEK USA in which it clearly written that TEK USA was transferring the rights to the lease payments and equipment to Mr. Hayes and it was addressed to Craig and dated just a year ago. so Susan realized that she has negotiated early termination with the wrong party. ...'The USA was hit by the Great Depression in 1929 because of increasing restrictions on international trade.' How far do you agree with this opinion? Use Sources 7, 8 and 9 and your own knowledge. The USA was hit by the Great Depression in 1929 because of increasing restrictions on international trade to a small extent, as it was indeed a significant factor in creating the onset of the Great Depression, as it acted as one of the long-term problems with the US economic system. Source 7 supports this argument, and suggests that it made world trade more difficult as it led to the USA not being able to 'expand its foreign markets as rapidly as its production'. However, other factors could also be considered to have started the Great Depression more significantly, with source 8 suggesting that it was due to long-term problems in the economy associated with a lack of purchasing power and the effects of the Wall Street Crash, along with source 9 demonstrating that it was due to the laissez-faire policies pursued by the Coolidge administration. The USA was arguably hit by the Great Depression in 1929 because of the combination of under consumption and overproduction linked to the maldistribution of wealth in US society during the 1920s. The problem with under consumption was mainly due to the fact that a substantial segment of the population that was farmers and workers in declining industries had not shared in the general prosperity of the early 1920s. In 1929, American farmers...

Replica watches are, quite simply, imitations of the more expensive brand named watches, at a mere fraction of the price. These imitations have the same general look, feel and ability, at a much more acceptable price. The quality of a replica can vary depending on the cost. A £20.00 replica would obviously be of a far better quality than a replica costing £400.00 and much easier to identify. This guide is mainly based on Rolex wrist watches as they carry the largest number of replicas in the market place. Some Omega examples are also included. This guide will show you how to avoid the replicas, as it states this is a guide and should be used for that purpose only. If you are unsure of a watches authenticity then don’t buy it. Superpower Relations

...Why did the relationship between the two superpowers deteriorate at the end of the 2nd World War? The end of the 2nd world war brought a huge change in the relationship between the two superpowers, the USA and the USSR, however early underlying ideological factors may have led to an alliance and strong friendship after the war always being unlikely. The complete contrast of a Communism system, adopted by the USSR, and a Capitalism system, adopted by the USA, was a huge underlying ideological factor that hindered the relationship between the two superpowers not only at the end of the 2nd world war, but also very early on in their relationship. The Russian Revolution could be seen as the starting point of this contrast in societies between the superpowers, as it highlighted the first communism vs. capitalism divide. Communism was viewed by many governments in the west of Europe as a highly destabilising force, and they began to build a pre-conception of communism and the countries that adopt communism. The Economies and Political systems differed hugely between the communist and capitalist societies, for example in capitalist economies the incentive of individual gain was a direct contrast to the community responsibility encouraged by communism, and therefore any possible solutions to help re-build countries such as Germany after the end of the 2nd world war that suit both superpowers societies successfully would have been near enough impossible. It was not only the Communist/Capitalist...

...American Government has a long history tracing back to over 200 years since the establishment of the USA. The revolution of the 1776 gave the American s an opportunity to provide the legal framework that would steer them to their management of their public affairs. It traces to the 13 North American States that were colonies of the British who after intense effort had managed to declare their independence in the famous Declaration of Independence that followed the birth of the USA in 1776. The USA constitution was a document that was written basing on the colonial experience that they had under the British since the discovery of America and the establishment of the plantation agriculture in the 16th century. After frantic efforts, the 13 colonies went ahead to have a unilateral declaration of their independence from Britain. Today, the USA is the model of an ideal democratic outlook of the modern times. The USA Constitution for which legalizes the presence of the Congress has become the model of the modern democracy. It has withstood the test of time in all countries of the world. In brief, the USA is the leading political force all over the world today. The influence of the USA is felt everywhere. Indeed, the USA signifies the world power that cannot be underestimated.
