Overview

Introduction to multimedia. Applications of multimedia. Virtual reality (VR).

Introduction to Multimedia

Multimedia is a combination of text, art, sound, animation, and video.
Text Graphic/ Image Animation Video Audio/ Sound

It is delivered to the user by electronic or digitally manipulated means. A multimedia project development requires creative, technical, organizational, and business skills.

Introduction to Multimedia

Multimedia becomes interactive multimedia when a user is given the option of controlling the elements. Interactive multimedia is called hypermedia when a user is provided a structure of linked elements for navigation. Multimedia developers develop multimedia projects.

Introduction to Multimedia

The software vehicle, the messages, and the content together constitute a multimedia project. A multimedia project shipped to end-users with or without instructions is called a multimedia title. A project can be Stand-alone or launched on the Web.

Introduction to Multimedia

Multimedia projects can be linear or nonlinear. Projects that are not interactive are called linear. Example: Power Point Slides, Watching a movie, listening to a story etc., Projects where users are given navigational control are called non-linear and user-interactive.

Introduction to Multimedia

Authoring tools are used to merge multimedia elements into a project. The software used for building multimedia content.
Example: Adobe Director, Adobe Flash, Adobe Dreamweaver etc.,

These software tools are designed to manage individual multimedia elements and provide user interaction.

Introduction to Multimedia

The primary media for delivering multimedia projects are:
Compact disc read-only (CD-ROM) Digital Versatile Disc (DVD)

Compact Disc Read-Only (CD-ROM)

CD-ROM is the most cost-effective distribution medium for multimedia projects. It can contain up to 80 minutes of full-screen video or sound. Capacity: 700MB CD burners are used for reading discs and converting the discs to audio, video, and data formats.

Digital Versatile Disc (DVD)

Multilayered DVD technology increases the capacity of current optical technology from 4.7GB to 18 GB. DVD authoring and integration software is used to create interactive front-end menus for films and games. DVD burners are used for reading discs and converting the disc to audio, video, and data formats.

Introduction to Multimedia

Copper wire, glass fiber, and radio/cellular technologies also serve a means for delivering multimedia files across a network.

Applications of Multimedia

Business - Business applications for multimedia include presentations training, marketing, advertising, product demos, databases, catalogues, instant messaging, and networked communication.

Applications of Multimedia

Schools - Educational software can be developed to enrich the learning process.

Applications of Multimedia

Home - Most multimedia projects reach the homes via television sets or monitors with built-in user inputs.

Applications of Multimedia

Public places - Multimedia will become available at standalone terminals or kiosks to provide information and help.

Virtual Reality (VR)
Virtual reality is an extension of multimedia. It uses the basic multimedia elements of imagery, sound, and animation. It requires terrific computing horsepower to be realistic. 3D graphics, animations and specialized hardware plays an important role for the success of VR.

Virtual Reality (VR)

In VR, cyberspace is made up of thousands of geometric objects plotted in three-dimensional space. The standards for transmitting VR in Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) documents have been developed on the World Wide Web. VRML documents have the file extension .wrl.

...field of multimedia computing system. Multimedia is a popular term these days, and the database community is now currently focusing more on multimedia databases. The reason multimedia is getting so much attention is because of technology trends are now beginning to make it possible to store and display multimedia data types through a computer. Multimedia database systems pose significantly different data management requirements compared to traditional database applications. There are already various operational systems for this task, but they are usually built as special-purpose systems and lack the general capability as exhibited in a database management system...

Multimedia Databases

...Multimedia Databases With technology rapidly changing, it is appropriate to research the topic of multimedia databases and how they affect people as users of this important technology. Whether people know it or not, they use multimedia databases on a regular basis. These databases include everything from data that consists of pictorial images to audio and video files. The main sticking point with multimedia databases is its ability to create a friendly user experience. One good example of a huge multimedia database would be the content provided by Apple Computer Inc.’s iTunes. iTunes is the world’s number one entertainment application that allows you to store your own music, video, images, applications, etc. The iTunes store is where one can clearly see the presence of a phenomenal multimedia database that allows users to also buy and download music, video, images, and applications. Users can then play this content either on their computers, iPods, iPhones, televisions, and other devices as they choose. What makes iTunes so special is its ability to store these different media formats in one easy-to-use store. This term paper will focus on the characteristics and content of multimedia databases and how they have made and can make life for the user of a system so much easier. This paper will also look at the difference between static media and dynamic media in regards to how information from a multimedia database management system (MM-DBMS) is retrieved. Finally...

Vidoe Mining

...on corporate data — typically in an alpha-numeric database, and relatively less work has been pursued for the mining of multimedia data (Zaïane, Han, & Zhu, 2000). Digital multimedia differs from previous forms of combined media in that the bits representing texts, images, audios, and videos can be treated as data by computer programs (Simoff, Djeraba, & Zaïane, 2002). One facet of these diverse data in terms of underlying models and formats is that they are synchronized and integrated hence, can be treated as integrated data records. The collection of such integral data records constitutes a multimedia data set. The challenge of extracting meaningful patterns from such data sets has lead to research and development in the area of multimedia data mining. This is a challenging field due to the non-structured nature of multimedia data. Such ubiquitous data is required in many applications such as financial, medical, advertising and Command, Control, Communications and Intelligence (C3I) (Thuraisingham, Clifton, Maurer, & Ceruti, 2001). Multimedia databases are widespread and multimedia data sets are extremely large. There are tools for managing and searching within such collections, but the need for tools to extract hidden and useful knowledge embedded within multimedia data is becoming critical for many decision-making applications. BACKGROUND Multimedia data...

New Media Skills Wanted for Top Management

...print industry. Against this backdrop, this paper explores the impact of technological and economic change on the hiring practices of American news media organizations. A content analysis was conducted over a period of three months in 2008 and 2009 for all the employment opportunities posted by the top ten newspaper and broadcast journalism companies in the United States. Each year, more than 700 postings were coded to determine the most desirable skills and attributes for job candidates and the amount of emphasis placed on multimedia expertise. The study also relied on interviews with recruiters for these companies who share their own views on what makes a desirable job candidate and reflect on some of the study’s findings. The paper argues that these job postings reflect an entire industry in transition. And in fact, the researchers identified several important changes from year-to-year, including an increased emphasis on Web/multimedia skills for broadcast newsrooms as well as further definition of what those skills should entail. For example, for the first time, an understanding of...
