SEJARAH PAKAIAN DI MALAYSIA Malaysia mempunyai jenis-jenis kain dan pakaian tradisional yang berbagai bentuk dan warna, dari tengkolok bulu burung dan baju kulit kayu, hinggalah kain songket Diraja yang antik. Pada zaman dahulu, penduduk peribumi memakai pakaian yang diperbuat daripada kulit kayu dan hiasan manik. Dengan ketibaan tamaddun lama, kain tenunan dan batik Melayu dipakai oleh orang kenamaan dan kerabat diraja. Dengan ketibaan pedagang asing, pakaian serta kain seperti sutera Cina, pelikat dan jubah Arab diperkenalkan di negara ini.

BAJU KEBAYA Baju kebaya dipakai oleh wanita Melayu. Ada dua teori tentang asal baju kebaya. Satu mengatakan perkataan 'kebaya' itu berasal daripada perkataan Arab habaya yang bermaksud pakaian labuh yang terbelah di hadapan. Satu lagi mengatakan pakaian seumpama ini dibawa oleh Portugis ke Melaka, maka sebab itulah kebaya telah lama dipakai di Melaka; bukan sahaja oleh wanita Melayu tetapi juga oleh wanita Cina Peranakan (Baba) dengan sedikit perbezaan dalam potongan dan gaya memakainya. Baju kebaya yang asal direka labuh hingga ke paras lutut ataupun lebih. Tangannya panjang dan lebar. Bahagian badannya mengikut potongan badan dan melebar ke bawah bermula dari bahagian punggung. Bahagian hadapannya pula terbelah dan berkolar sampai ke kaki baju. Bahagian yang terbelah ini disemat dengan tiga kerongsang berasingan atau yang berangkai dengan rantai halus. Kerongsang ini dikenali sebagai ibu dan anak kerongsang. Kerongsang yang besar dan di atas sekali dipanggil ibu dan dua lagi yang kecil dan dipakai bawah kerongsang ibu dipanggil anak. Kebaya ada pelbagai gaya. Contohnya di Selangor, kebayanya tidak berkolar. Di Perak pula lengan kebayanya sangat lebar berbanding dengan kebaya di negeri-negeri yang lain. Di Pahang pula, baju kebayanya yang dikenali sebagai baju Riau Pahang mempunyai leher berkolar dan berkancing seperti baju kurung cekak musang tetapi bahagian hadapannya juga berbelah seperti baju kebaya yang lain; malah turut dipasangkan kerongsang di bawah kancingnya yang berbutang itu.

BAJU KURUNG CEKAK MUSANG Baju kurung cekak musang adalah sama dengan baju kurung Teluk Belanga kecuali pada bahagian lehernya. Leher baju kurung cekak musang ada kolar. Kolar tersebut hanya selebar satu jari dan kedudukannya menegak. Pada bahagian hadapan kolar ada bukaan panjang yang berkancing. Biasanya ada satu kancing pada kolar dan dua atau tiga lagi kancing pada bukaannya. Butang emas atau emas berbatu permata digunakan sebagai pengancingnya. Kancing yang paling terkenal ialah kancing emas yang dipanggil garam sebuku dan kancing berbatu permata yang dikenali sebagai kunang-kunang sekebun. Baju kurung cekak musang wanita boleh dipakai dengan seluar atau kain sarung. Seluar yang selalu digunakan ialah kain seluar panjang, seluar panjang dan seluar bambu. Jika mahu, samping dan selendang juga boleh dipakai bersama. Baju Melayu cekak musang lelaki pula dipakai dengan seluar dan bersamping. Lebih segak lagi apabila bertanjak atau bersongkok.

BAJU KURUNG TELUK BELANGA Baju kurung Teluk Belanga juga lebih dikenali sebagai baju kurung atau baju kurung Johor. Baju ini boleh dipakai oleh kaum lelaki dan wanita. Dari segi sejarahnya, baju ini mula dipakai pada zaman pemerintahan Sultan Johor, iaitu Almarhum Sultan Abu Bakar yang bersemayam di Teluk Belanga, Singapura pada sekitar tahun 1800-an. Justeru itulah ia dipanggil Baju Kurung Teluk Belanga dan ia juga merupakan pakaian kebangsaan orang Melayu Johor. Sejak itu pemakaian baju ini telah berkembang ke negeri-negeri lain di Tanah Melayu. Baju kurung merupakan pakaian kebangsaan rakyat Malaysia dan banyak dipakai dalam majlis-majlis rasmi. Baju Kurung Teluk Belanga adalah labuh, dan potongannya longgar kerana dirusuknya berpesak dan di bawah lengannya pula diletakkan kekek. Potongan lehernya bulat dan berbelah di depan. Pada sekeliling tebukan lubang leher itu, jahitan tulang belut digunakan bagi mengemas dan memperkukuhkan lagi leher baju tersebut. Baju kurung teluk belanga yang dipakai oleh kaum lelaki dan wanita pada dasarnya adalah sama kecuali; a) Baju yang dipakai oleh lelaki labuhnya adalah separas punggung, alas lehernya lebar dan mempunyai tiga kocek iaitu di dada kiri, di dada kanan dan di bahagian bawah hadapan baju, manakala baju kurung yang dipakai oleh kaum wanita pula labuhnya hingga ke lutut dengan satu kocek di dada kiri atau pun tanpa kocek. b) Kaum lelaki memakai baju ini dengan seluar panjang samada seluar Acheh atau Seluar panjut Kaum wanita pula memadankannya bersama kain samada kain dari jenis batik, songket atau sutera. Kain ini pula diikat dengan ikatan yang bernama ombak mengalun, iaitu dengan lipatan-lipatan yang letaknya di rusuk kanan atau kiri. Kepala kain sarung lazimnya diletakkan ke belakang apabila dipakai dengan baju kurung ini. PAKAIAN ORANG CINA Sejarah kehadiran kaum Cina bermula dengan berkembangnya Melaka sebagai pusat perdagangan, diikuti Pulau Pinang dan Kula Lumpur. Kehadiran mereka ini membawa bersama bukan sahaja barangan dagangan untuk tukaran, tetapi jua adat resam, budaya dan corak pakaian tradisional mereka yang kemudiannya disesuaikan dengan suasana tempatan. Busana klasik Cina yang asalnya berlapis-lapis, sarat dengan sulaman benang emas dan sutera, kini masih boleh dilihat dengan diubahsuai mengikut peredaran masa dan kesesuaian. Jubah Labuh, Cheongsam, Baju Shanghai dan Samfoo kekal dipakai di dalam majlis dan upacara. Kebanyakannya masih dihasilkan dari negeri China menggunakan fabrik sutera dan broked yang berwarna terang dengan ragamhias benang emas dan perak. Lelaki memakai jubah labuh Ming moden dari satin dan wanita memakai Baju Shanghai yang berbelah di depan.

CHEONGSAM Pakaian cheongsam atau ‘baju panjang’ yang selesa dan anggun juga sering dilihat hingga ke hari ini. Lazimnya, cheongsam mempunyai leher yang tinggi, butang di bahagian bahu, bentuk yang sendat di pinggang dan belahan di kiri dan kanan kain. Pakaian ini selalunya diperbuat daripada kain sutera, satin dan lain-lain jenis kain lembut.

SAMFOO
Samfoo membawa maksud 'baju dan seluar' dalam dialek Kantonis. Ia merupakan pakaian harian wanita keturunan Cina selain dari 'cheong sam'. Ia digemari oleh wanita-wanita separuh umur dan yang bekerja di ladang, lombong atau di rumah. Samfoo diperbuat daripada kain nipis yang tidak bercorak atau berbunga halus. Samfoo turut dipakai oleh lelaki berketurunan Cina tetapi mempunyai sedikit perbezaan dengan samfoo yang dipakai oleh wanita Cina. Pakaian ini terdiri daripada baju yang longgar dan terbelah di depan dan berkolar tinggi serta dipakai bersama seluar longgar seperti seluar baju Melayu. Pakaian ini biasanya diperbuat daripada kain lembut seperti kain sutera. Pakaian tradisional ini jarang sekali dipakai oleh lelaki berketurunan Cina di Malaysia.

PAKAIAN ORANG INDIA
Kehadiran kaum India ke Tanah Melayu menyaksikan bermulanya gaya pemakaian dari benua India khususnya di kalangan Hindu-Ceylonese-Tamil juga keturunan Punjabi-Singhs. Pakaian kaum India lebih dikenali dengan warna-warna terang dan kaya dengan tenunan dan sulaman benang emas, perak, labuci juga batu-batu permata. Di hari perkahwinan lelaki India memakai dhoti dilengkapi dengan turban manakala wanitanya memakai sari yang digandingkan dengan choli ketat. Wanita remaja mengenakan skirt labuh 'Ihenga' juga dipadankan dengan baju pendek atau choli.
SARI
Sari merupakan pakaian untuk kaum perempuan dan ia adalah pakaian seharian dan turut dipakai pada musim perayaan. Sari terdiri daripada lembaran kain yang berukuran semeter hingga dua meter lebar dan panjangnya pula antara lima hingga lima belas meter mengikut saiz pemakai. Kebanyakan kain sati adalah jarang dan lembut. Sebelum memakai sari, Si pemakai perlu memakai anak baju yang ketat dan singkat. Kemudian sati dililit dari pinggan dan diselempang pada bahu kiri. Lilitan pinggang sebanyak tiga hingga lima kali untuk menguatkan lilitan supaya tidak terurai. Dari segi pemilihan warna, kebanyakan sari yang dipakai berwarna gelap seperti merah, biru, hijau dan ungu. Warna-warna ini lebih menarik untuk sari yang dipakai pada musim perayaan. Pemilihan corak pula adalah mengikut si pemakai. Ada yang lebih suka bercorak tumbuha-tumbuhan dan ada juga yang lebih suka bercorak haiwan. Untuk menjadikan si pemakai kelihatan menarik, kebanyakan mereka memilih sari yang mempunyai pelbagai jenis manik yang berkilat. Ini akan menyerlahkan lagi kecantikan si pemakainnya. Wala apapun pemilihan warna biasanya dipadankan dengan corak yang menarik dan sesuai dengan si pemakai.

DHOTI
Dhoti merupakan pakaian untuk kamum lelaki. Pakaian ini diperbuat daripada kain yang bewarna putih. Kebanyakan dhoti hanya boleh dilihat di hari perkahwinan sahaja kerana generasi muda hari ini tidak berminat dengan pakaian tersebut.
Dhoti diperbuat daripada lembaran kain putih yang panjang. Kain tersebut dililit di bahagian pinggang dan diikat pada celah paha dan kemudian disangkukan pada bahu. Kemudian kain tersebut dihiasi dengan manik-manik kecil supaya kelihatan menarik. Ada juga dhoti yang bewarna kuning pudar atau kuning susu. Pakaian ini banyak dipakai oleh golongan ceti.

PAKAIAN KAUM IBAN Kain Sirat Kain Sirat atau kain cawat adalah pakaian asas kaum Iban. Sirat adalah sebidang kain yang berukuran 50 cm X 500 cm. Bahagian hujung kain ini dihiasi dengan sulaman atau tenunan yang indah. Kadang-kadang manik dan kulit siput turut dikarangkan sebagai hiasan di bahagian itu. Sirat dipakai dengan cara melilitnya dipinggang dan celah kangkang. Hujung kain ini dijuntaikan dari pinggang ke hadapan dan belakang badan; mempamerkan bahagian yang berhias. Dandong Ia merupakan kain selendang yang dipakai oleh lelaki Iban. Dandong lebih lebar daripada bedong. Panjang dandong tidak tetap kerana kain ini digunakan sebagai pembungkus barang-barang persembahan dalam upacara-upacara tertentu. Dandong diperbuat daripada kain yang ditenun dengan cara ikat. Bidang Wanita Iban memakai kain sarung yang dipanggil bidang. Kain sarung ini sempit dan panjangnya cuma lebih kurang separas lutut. Biasanya bidang diperbuat daripada sebidang kian yang berukuran 110 cm x 60 cm dan terdiri daripada dua bidang kain seumpamanya yang dicantumkan. Bidang yang digunakan sebagai pakaian harian tidak banyak reka coraknya. Kebiasaannya bidang ini hanya dihias oleh reka corak jalur-jaluran yang bewarna-warni. Bidang yang dipakai ketika upacara tertentu @ sebarang perayaan pula dihiasi oleh pelbagai reka corak geometrik dan diwarnakan dengan warna merah bata dan kekuning-kuningan. Malah ada diantara bidang tersebut yang dihiasi dengan reka corak bermotif tradisional yang disongketkan dengan benang emas atau perak di atas kain dasar yang bewarna merah. Kalambi Baju Kaum Iban yang dipanggil kalambi pula ada dua jenis iaitu kalambi berlengan dan kalambi tanpa lengan. Kalambi dipakai oleh lelaki dan wanita Iban ketika upacara tertentu sahaja. Potongan kalambi sangat ringkas iaitu terdiri daripada sebidang kain segi empat bujur yang dilipat dua. Sisinya dicantumkan dan ditinggalkan ruang untuk lubang lengan atau ambungan lengan. Panjang kalambi berbeza-beza iaitu ada yang separas punggung dan ada yang labuh hingga ke lutut. Kalambi ditenun dengan segala macam motif yang indah. Terdapat kalambi yang dihias dengan jalur-jalur yang indah dan ada pula kalambi yang dihias dengan jalur-jalur dan setengahnya pula dipenuhi dengan figura-figura roh dan binatang. Kalambi yang dipakai oleh pahlawan juga dilapiskan dengan kekabu sebagai pertahanan. Ada kalambi yang menggunakan kain yang ditenun dengan cara ikat. Kain ini bermotifkan jalur-jaluran yang menegak, figura manusia dan burung. Semua motif tersebut ditenun dalam bentuk geometrik. Hujung kalambi hasil tenunan ikat ini pula dibiarkan berjumbai, berpintal atau dihias dengan karangan manik. Bedong Wanita Iban juga memakai kain selendang yang panjang dan sempit. Kain selempang ini dikenali sebagai bedong, iaitu ia dihiasi oleh reka corak tenunan yang sangat halus. Panjang bedung hampir sama dengan sirat. Beong dipakai di bahu sebagai selendang atau diselempangkan di badan seperti pangkahan di dada dalam upacara-upacara rasmi. Pua Kumbu Pua Kumbu adalah hasil tenunan kaum Iban yang paling terkemuka. Pua Kumbu dikatakan mempunyai kuasa dan dijadikan bahan penting di dalam upacara-upacara seperti berubat, gawai dan seumpamanya. Dalam upacara perkahwinan pula, ibu bapa pengantin perempuan menghadiahkan kain ini kepada keluarga pengantin lelaki sebagai 'mas kahwin'. Semasa bersanding, pasangan pengantin duduk di bawah 'sengkuap' untuk mendapat restu daripada saudara tua. Pua juga digunakan untuk menghias pelamin, dan lain-lain kegunaan selain digunakan sebagai pakaian. PAKAIAN KAUM KADAZAN Kaum Kadazan adalah sederhana berbanding dengan kumpulan etnik yang lain. Pakaian kaum lelaki menunjukkan pengaruh pakaian Cina. Terdapat tiga jenis blaus kaum wanita. Satu daripadanya ialah blaus lengan pendek yang dipakai oleh wanita muda. Satu lagi ialah blaus dengan lengan ¾ dipakai oleh wanita pertengahan umur untuk pakaian seharian. Jenis yang ketiga dipakai oleh wanita tua atau pakar ritual semasa sesuatu upacara. PAKAIAN KAUM WANITA Sinuangga’ Baju blaus lengan pendek dan leher berbentuk U dipakai oleh wanita muda. Mempunyai sulaman berwarna suramdi sepanjang lubang kepala dan lengan, dansepanjang jahitan tepi dan pertengahan belakang. Benang berwarna merah, kuning, dan krim digunakan. Jahitan utama: sinusuk bulus (jahitan rantai), tantop (jahitan bulu). Teknik jahitan bulu juga digunakan untuk membuat binuunsi’, satu jalur merah dan kuning sempit yang ditenun seperti tali kasut. Butang betawi dilingkar dengan tali di bahagian dalam. Ini dalah supaya butang ini dapat digunakan dengan blaus yang lain. Butang betawi pada satu masa dahulu dilekat sehingga ke leher baju untuk upacara tertentu dan separuh dari bahagian bawah blaus untuk pakaian seharian. Pada masa kini, tidak banyak perbezaan nya. Butang-butang ini diikat dari bahagian atas ke bawah blaus menggunakan benang kapas. Butang perak Betawi yang disalut emas merupakan simbol status bagi kaum Kadazan Penampang. Sesiapa yang mampu mempunyai 30 butang dianggap kaya. AKSESORI * Himpogot Tali pinggang dibuat dari duit perak. Biasanya tiga di pakai bergantung kepada kekayaan pemakai, satu di keliling pinggang, dan dua lagi di atas dan di bawah tangkong. * Tangkong. Tali pinggul yang dibuat daripda 84 gelang tembaga berukir. Tiga tangkong dipakai bersama, diikat dengan tali ratan merah(hindagang), hitam(initom) . Tali ratan merah digunakan untuk wanita yang belum berkahwin dan hitam untuk wanita yang sudah berkahwin. Tali in biasanya di biarkan kosong di bahagian belakang untuk mengelakan dari sesak nafas.. Tangkong ini boleh di regangkan untuk berbagai tujuan, satu darinya ialah memudahkan seseorang membawa bakul di belakang. * Titimbak Pin rambut digunakan untuk menghias dan mengetatkan sanggul. * Tiningkokos Gelang lingkar dibuat dari tembaga atau perak * Gohong Gelang tembaga atau perak * Hamai Rantai leher * Simbong Subang * Paun Kerongsang dibuat dari duit syilling emas * Siga do bobohizan Dipakai oleh Bobohizan semasa sesuatu upacar ritual. Ia merupakan tengkolok penuh dengan hiasan daripada bulu burung merak atau turki. Bulu burung ini diikat dan dijahit keatas satu jalur kain yang lebar. Bulu ini memberi sokongan dan bentuk kepada tengkolok tersebut, yang mana kelihatan dari hadapan hampir ditutup oleh kain seperti kipas di kepala. Dari bahagian belakang, bulu-bulu ini hampir semua kelihatan. Jalur kain dimana bulu itu dilekatkan dihiasi dengan renda, sulaman dan manik-manik. Andavi do tandaa’ ataupun bulu panjang ayam jantan juga dijahit di hadapan kain tersebut. Hujung setiap bulu diikat dengan potongan kain yang berwarna-warni. Dari bahagian bawah kedua dua tepi tengkolok, dijahit beberapa lingkaran manik berwarna warni yang bergantung di bahagian hadapan/dada.. Tengkolok ini diikat dengan kain di belakang kepala. Tinggi tengkolok ini ialah kira-kira 1 ½ kaki. * Husob Kain berwarna warni yang dipakai oleh bobohizan diatas bahu dan melintangi badan. Biasanya dua husob dipakai berselang-seli. PAKAIAN LELAKI * Gaung Baju lengan panjang tanpa sulaman. Pada masa sekarang, ia dihiasi dengan perhiasan dan butang emas. * Souva Seluar panjang hitam dengan ikat pinggang berwarna biru indigo. Perhiasan emas di sepanjang pinggang seluar moden. * Kaking atau toogot Bengkung pinggang hitam * Siga Penutup kepala dibuat dari kain dastar, dilipat atau dililit dalam beberapa cara yang istimewa: hinopung (hopung= ular sawa) model berpilin Kinahu (kahu’ = pemegang belanga) model berlipat sinimbitan atau tinahanuk, dimana satu tepi kecil terkeluar. * Tupi’ sinikat Topi bulat dibuat dari tali yang kuat dengan teknik lingkaran dan ikaat untuk menguatkan siga.
