The statement described in the question “It is not the union that organizes employees, it is management” has two sides to the coin. Unions organize workers for representation, work and wage conditions where the employees can apply their training to the work at hand. In turn, the management of the company can utilize their contracted employees who are working under an agreed upon labor agreement. These union workers will take their work responsibilities from the company management under the supervision of the union stewards who verify if the company is following the work agreement. Additionally, it is quite clear across all types of industries that many managers have a problem with the union interface where management view the union as an adversary. To their credit, it is clear that many union representative and stewards isolate themselves from internal management and also view the leadership and management team as a rival instead of a team mate. Specifically, evidence suggests that negotiated wages in a unionized setting are an increasing function of a firm’s prior profitability” (Bova, 2013, p.14). Based on this prior quote it is clear that the union contract holds a pivotal facet to company profitability and the utilization of these union employees must provide exceptional performance models to attain these company goals. This paper takes a critical look at the assumptions behind this idea, in an effort to understand better the meaning of ethica] management decisions. A distinction is made between stakeholder analysis and stakeholder synthesis. The two most natural kinds of stakeholder synthesis are then defined and discussed: strategic and multi-fiduciary.
