This course introduces the student to word processing, spreadsheet, database, file management and other related topics.

Course Learning Outcomes:

The objective of this course is to assist students in developing following Harris-Stowe State University hallmarks of student learning.

Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:

1. Develop an effective communication skills: By developing effective communication skills, students will be able to express and exchange ideas, concepts, and perspectives using methods appropriate for the audience and situation

• Students will be able to communicate online using e-mail.

2. Develop Interpersonal growth: Through continual learning, students will be able to develop and assess their value systems, make ethical decisions, build healthy professional and personal relationships, and contribute to their community.

• Students will be able to improve their own personal relationships

3. Develop an effective critical thinking: By integrating a broad educational foundation with in-depth knowledge of a field of study, students will be able to manage information, analyze, and solve real-world problems, construct meaningful connections, learn from their experiences, and apply their learning to new situations.

Teaching Methods:

Lectures: Important material from the text and outside sources will be covered in class. Students should plan to take careful notes as not all material can be found in the text or readings. Student participation and discussion is encouraged.

CASE STUDIES: Will be assigned to give students hands on experience. The case studies will be assigned a due date at the assignment time. No late case studies will be accepted. Late work will receive a grade of “zero” or “F”.

Exams: Exams will be given at the scheduled times. All exams will be timed so it is important that the student not only know the skills but also show up promptly to the test. When the time has passed, students will be required to turn in what they have completed at that point.

Evaluation of Student Performance:

Letter grades will be determined using a standard percentage point evaluation as outlined below. Grades MAY be curved after the total semester points have been tabulated. However, do not count on a curve to obtain your desired grade.

Course Policies:

Class Assignments: Missed or late homework cannot be made up. There are no make-up exams. Students missing exams due to a pre-arranged, excused absence may be allowed a make- exam. Any missed exam will result in a score of ‘F’ for the exam.

Online Class Attendance: Attendance for this course is taken Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. There will be a in the assignments section of e-racer (my-HSSU) discussion question assigned for each day for the purpose of student learning.

Academic Dishonesty: Plagiarism and cheating are serious offenses and may be punished by failure on exam, or project; and or failure in course.

Need for Assistance: if you have any condition, such as physical or learning disability, which will make it difficult for you to carry out the work as I have outlined it, or which will require academic accommodations, please notify me as soon as possible.

...Having a financial plan is a crucial part to everyone. Knowing how much money you have in your account, and how much money you can take out from your account allows for quick access, thus avoiding hardship. Various accounts are used for different reasons. One should know the difference between the accounts, so that when they need to either deposit or withdraw money, they do it more efficiently and correctly. As for me, I would create a financial plan including a few accounts that will be used for different occasions. One account that I would open would be a savings account. Savings accounts are usually used to save money rather quickly for future uses. Savings accounts have higher interest rates than others. With college coming up, a savings account is a good option for me because education does not come at a cheap price. The money that I deposit would gain in value with the interest rates that coincide. A second bank account that I would open would be a checking account. Different than a savings account, a checking account is meant to be used on a daily basis and not really meant to save money like a savings account. With a checking account, I would be able to deposit and withdraw money at any time, depending on what I need it for. For example, if I want to make smaller purchases, I would withdraw money out of my checking account to pay for the item. In addition, another benefit of a checking account is that i would be able to access ATM's and have a debit card. In case...

...The subject of debt and managing money is a topic most young adults pay little attention to. Not because they aren’t interest but because they don’t understand the importance of the subjects. In the seminar that took place last week I learned some valuable information that wouldn’t just help me in my young adult years but for a lifetime. For every teen when you reach the big one eight it feels that you gain so much more freedom. You’re now considered an adult and the credit card companies began to start sending you all these offers. However, with this new found freedom comes responsibility. To people who don’t know the risk of getting credit cards this may be a bad road to go down. Yet, I’m not saying that credit cards are bad, what I’m saying is that you have to be responsible. Credit cards should never be used as a long term tool. Everyday expenses should not be charged on your credit card but should be budgeted. It will come out being a lot more expensive charging a 5 dollar hamburger, than just budgeting it in to you weekly spending. Some people really don’t know the true cost of a charge transaction. An example was given to me during the seminar I attended. Sample: $1000 purchase @12% APR paying monthly min. = 9.3 years/interest paid =$513.36. Therefore you end up paying more than half of what your initial purchase was in interest. So when considering a credit card you really need to know what you’re using it for.
