Mango (Mangifera indica L.) is the most important relished fruit crop in the sub-tropical and tropical regions of the India. It is an outstanding source of vitamin A, and also a good source of vitamin C apart from various minerals and vitamins. One hundred shoots were tagged under each treatment for recording the observations. The observation recorded were as follows: percentage of dead shoots, average shoot length, average number of laterals/ pruned shoots, date of flowering initiation, peak period of flowering, percentage of fruited panicles, total number of fruits per plant, fruit yield per plant, average fruit weight, total soluble solids, acidity and ascorbic acid content of fruit. Percentage of dead shoots were recorded three months after pruning in each treatment, while average shoot length and average number of laterals produced from each pruned shoots were recorded four months after pruning in each treatment. Ten fruits were taken from each treatment for measuring average fruit weight with the help of balance and were expressed in grams. The total soluble solids (TSS) of mango juice were determined by using digital refractometer at temperature 25˚C and were expressed as ºBrix. The titratable acidity was determined by the method given by Association of Analytical Chemists (AOAC, 1990) using Phenolphthalein (1%) as an indicator by titrating against N/10 NaOH. The acidity was expressed in gram of citric acid per 100 ml of juice. Maximum shoot mortality (21.90 %) was recorded on 15th August pruned shoots; this was at par with 15th July pruned shoots followed by 15th June pruned shoots and minimum (4.40 %) shoot mortality was observed in control. Longest shoot length was recorded (45.50 cm) in 15th June pruned shoots followed by 15th July pruned shoots (32.1 cm). It might be due to early shoot pruning just after harvest facilitates more utilization of nutrients in shoot development rather than their utilization for wood formation during transport from root system to upper branches. Lowest average shoot length (8.50 cm) was recorded in control. Number of laterals per pruned shoot was maximum (5.2) in15th July shoot pruned trees which is at par with all other treatments. A significant response to shoot pruning was observed with regard to flowering of mango cv Mallika. Early flower initiation (17th January) was observed in control followed by 15th September pruned shoots (20th January), and very late in 15th July pruned shoots treatment (3rd February). Peak period of flowering was early in control (2nd February) followed by 15th August pruned shoots (7th February) and very late in 15th July pruned shoots (20th February). The annual event will be held on November 14-16 at the JCentre Mall Convention Hall, A.S. Fortuna St., Mandaue City in Cebu. The congress will address two serious concerns, according to Virginia de la Fuente, president of the Philippine Mango Industry Foundation, Inc.  (PMIFI) which is collaborating with other agencies to stage the event. The first concern is the fast dwindling volume of mango production in the country. For instance, in 2007, the total production amounted to 1.028 billion kilos whereas in 2011 the volume had gone down to 778 million kilos. That’s a decrease of about 25 percent. In my opinion, I can say, Without any doubt, that the best mangoes that the world has ever tasted came from the Philippines. I know people from other mango producing countries will question my statement. However, I am confident to say that there is no other mango out there that can beat Philippine mangoes in terms of sweetness, sourness, size, and weight. I tried almost all the imported mango varieties here in the US — including local mangoes. They all taste different from the original Philippine Mango. There are even varieties here that says “Manila Mangoes” in the sticker, but the taste does not say so. There are many mango varieties in the Philippines. Champagne mango or Carabao mango is probably the most famous in terms of taste. This mango variety is the sweetest mango that I ever tasted. It is also the mango variety that the Philippines export to other countries. There are different strains (breed) produced from Carabao mango — one of which is called Sweet Elena. This study has eight set-ups with four as the control variable and the other as the experimental. The set-ups are as follows: Set-up 1 and 2 with one unripe mango in each and ashes; 3 and 4 with four pieces of banana in each with ashes; 5 and 6 with just one mango in each; and 7 and 8 with just four bananas in each. The ripeness of the fruits was defined by the color of its exocarp and its growth rate. Results show that the set-ups containing banana and ash ripened faster compared to the ones without ash and that there was no significant difference in all set-ups of the mangoes. The researchers concluded that wood ashes are effective in hastening the ripeness of banana but not mangoes.
