Manners in Our Society I used to get annoyed at my father for judging the type of music and television that I liked and not allowing it at home when I was growing up. I have since gained a respect for what my parents were “judging”. Children do not pay attention to actual content and a lot of messages can be slipped into a catchy tune or a popular program. My parents were right these influences do have an effect upon how “kids these days are raising themselves”. Manners have declined due to disrespectful music lyrics, anti-authoritative television programming and parents not paying attention to what influences their children in media

The lyrics in music have gotten more disrespectful as time has gone by. Parents need to pay attention to what their children are really hearing. How have we gone from Louie Armstrong’s, “It’s A Wonderful World” to Twisted Sister’s, “We’re Not Gonna Take It”? When I was growing up in the 1970’s my parents did not approve of music in our home with bad messages, morals and attitudes. Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” was considered demonic and was definitely not played in our home. When I had my own children I understood my parents point of view. I also found myself banning certain music from our atmosphere at home as well. I noticed how much more disrespectful it had gotten from the 1970’s to the 1990’s and 2000’s. Eminem and Dr, Dre for example are not role models I wanted my children idolizing at all. The role models children follow in music and television have a large impact. I was allowed to watch television after homework, chores and playing outside. My parents were also careful when it came to what me and my siblings were allowed to watch on television. My parents took an active role in our viewing habits and when a program showed authority figures in a less than positive light, then they were quick to explain how that was only acceptable on television and not in the real world. My mother and father pointed out The Dukes of Hazzard did not accurately portray how real police were and it was not ok to disregard authority the way Bo and Luke did. It was not appropriate to dress like Daisy did either. I found myself banning programs such as South Park and Beavis and Butthead because in reality that was not how my children should believe kids should act. There is a big difference between The Waltons and the Simpsons. Parenting has a few more challenges with all the media children are exposed to nowadays, since the 1970’s more has been added to be aware of. You never know what is liable to be seen or heard because standards are in decline as well as manners. Parents need to be actively involved with what is influencing the next generation or manners will continue to decline. There are now video games and computers that can have an impact on manners. When I was young my parents did not have to worry about the internet and video games were simple ones like Pong. I watched my grandchildren playing Grand Theft Auto and I was horrified to see how bad manners are rewarded in that game. I nor my parents would have allowed a game in our homes, let alone pay good money to have these manners taught to our children. I have often stated to my parents “when I grow up and have children I won’t be strict like you”, I understand why they would laugh at that because I have laughed at that same statement from my own children Manners may be on the decline in society, but the leverage parents have over their children need not deteriorate also. There is a challenge I see this generation facing where dealing with declining manners are concerned with all that kids are exposed to and have access to. Parents need, now more than ever to be vigilant about what is influencing their children’s minds. The world cannot just be shut out or turned off. They need guidance to discern what good manners are and are not. Music lyrics, television, video games and the internet can and will, without parental circumspection, promote a further decline in our societies manners. Parents can have an impact as well by simply paying attention to what is impacting their children’s manners

Manners

...Why manners are important in today's society. I think manners are important in today's society because it's a personality trait that's good to have. It's practically a necessity. Great manners help you through a lot of life's obstacles for different reasons. Consideration is a reason why manners are important which goes along with your maturity level and how polite you can be on a daily basis. It shows you're a decent person, and that you understand and have respect for the people around you. Manners are very important when it comes to a good social life, ever since elementary school we were taught to use our manners and be polite to the people we tal k to everyday. People judge you all the time, it's just a way of life, and having great manners brings off a positive response and attitude toward other people, and people will unconsciously think of you as a polite and caring person. Another reason that manners exist for a good reasons is, coexistence. Without polite people around, and well manners, coexistence between humans would be quite difficult I think. Manners are just the guidelines to peaceful coexistence between people, and without it, I think it would be a different kind of society to be living in, kind of like animals. Without manners it would be kind of difficult to have a social life, get a job, have any sort of relationship with people etc. Most of the time we don't think about using our manners everyday, but because it has such a big impact on our...

...Manners and Chivalry: Dead in Society? Thomas James Composition 1 Mrs. O’Connor 28 November 2013 Abstract Manners and chivalry in society have become a thing of the past. Today’s new technologies and peer pressure and marketing schemes of corporations, combined with lack of parent intervention have negated the skills. From the move of women into the workplace and to their full equality, men have lost their gentleman attitude toward the female species. In combination with lack of proper family time and negative detrimental media output, it has altered the way our youths act in society. Furthermore, turning our whole way of life as it used to be into something where we ask ourselves “do I want to bring a child into it?” Manners and Chivalry: Dead in Society? A glance through history tells of days of women and gentleman and the well-known romantic courtships of history. Evolution of modesty in relationships of past, to the present open sexually explicit relationships displayed on television, have desensitized the worlds youth perspective on moral behavior. Has the gift of technology, and a hectic life’s work schedule, taken the parent away from the home so much, that kids are teaching other kids habits that parents don’t condone? The time has come for society to pull back on the reins on socially and morally unacceptable behaviors. Chivalry, defined by Merriam Webster’s dictionary, states “An honorable and polite way of behaving, especially toward women” (Webster). This is a...

Why Is Chivalry Important

...Webster, is the system, spirit, or customs of medieval knighthood; the qualities of the ideal knight, such as gallantry, valor, honor, courtesy, and a grand respect for women. Of course, knights were from the middle ages, and our society has since grown and developed into our modern culture known today. With this modernization came a new definition for the term chivalry. Most people, when referring to the word, think of men’s courtesy, attentiveness, and manners toward women. Sadly, present day chivalry has taken a beating, and is almost dead. Chivalry has become almost non existent because of the new found roles and attitudes of women, as well as men’s confusion and lack of care for chivalrous acts in today’s society....

Disappearing Social Grace in the Modern Time

...of manners and courtesy. There is a certain crudeness and crassness that has suddenly become accepted behavior, even desirable. ~ Fannie Flagg, author of Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café. The days of “Please, May I and thank you” is apparently diminishing. The much talked about “next generation” is either entangled in social networking sites or are much too busy dallying around. At this rate, manners and etiquettes may soon be wiped out from our society. The disappearing social grace in this day and age is truly a cause for concern. The biggest problem of today’s generation is freedom. Well, excess freedom to be precise. This freedom entered our society in a sudden flood of rights which people hadn’t expected before. In the name of these rights we are now willing to go to any extent to achieve what we want. Throughout this struggle we have forgotten the line between decency and downright rudeness. We have forgotten that our words, our actions hold the power to hurt someone’s sentiments. If we cannot show gratitude towards one another, then why should we go around offending people? Ever heard of karma? Whatever goes around comes around. If your demeanor exudes ill breeding then I’m afraid others would definitely treat in the same manner. In today’s culture there is a huge distinction between the social classes of the society. The rich and powerful are highly esteemed, whether they are respectful towards the lower classes or not. The norms of the society must...

Choose Civility

...Technology Technology reigns supreme in our world. And often times it takes precedence over our civility. We’re so preoccupied with our technology, mostly cell phones, that we let them get in the way of our manners. Many complain that often, people use their phones when in conversations, during class, in work meetings, etc. Also, people are more inclined to more rude because they feels as if they have an invisible cloak on when they’re behind a computer screen. This would not have happened way back when because society did not have this level of technology. Many do these rude things because, while they think it’s rude, they see everyone else doing it, therefore it must be fine to do. Social Organization Social hierarchy, especially in families, has changed drastically in the past 50-60 years. In the case of families, kids have gotten a bigger role in decisions, etc. This creates talking back when a kid doesn’t agree with a decision, a kid bossing their parents around, having a sense of entitlement, etc. Also, the elderly have had a decreased role in society today. With this, it is common to see people being rude to older people whether it be not giving up a seat on the bus or putting them in retirement homes. Signs and Symbols We have become more rude in the way that we show body language. We're more prone to showing how we feel in a rude manner, for example raising an eyebrow when we see something we don't like or approve, rolling our eyes when we don't agree with a decision...

Our Culture

...Our Culture/ Bangladeshi Culture The culture of a society means the way of living, eating habit, cultural functions, different kinds of festivals, clothes, language, religion, values, policies, tradition etc. It is the complete picture of a nation and the most important and basic concept of sociology. There are some characteristics of culture. Firstly, it must be social and it is developed from the society and social communication. Secondly, all the rules of a culture are not learnt by the people in the society. Some are learned and some are acquired. The cultural activities of a society are totally different from another society. Cultural elements like the way of living, eating habit, cultural functions, different kinds of festivals, clothes, language, religion, values, policies, tradition etc. are totally different from other cultural elements. In our culture, our songs are based on rural and idyllic pictures of life. We have jari, sari, bhatiali, polligiti, religious and mystic songs. Similarly, we have our own food habits like eating rice and fish. Again, we have our traditional dress like lungi, Panjabi, shirt, saree and blouse. Nowadays, it is seen that our cultural activities are changing because of the influence of the western culture. So, our young generation is no longer interested in our folk or idyllic songs. They are fascinated by Hindi or English music. In summary, Culture is a part of our life and we are not out of our own culture. We live and grow up in the midst...

Saint Vincent de Paul

...Saint Vincent de Paul Society Brief History About 200 years ago, Frédéric Ozanam, a young French nobleman who lives in Paris, had the vision to build an organization that focus on helping people in need in a one-on-one daily basis. He named the organization as St. Vincent de Paul Society. Members of the Society were proud to call themselves as "Vincentians", in tribute to St. Vincent de Paul. Vincentians have the desire to help and serve the poor and in needs. They provide food, transportation and shelter, visit shut-ins, purchase personal care items, clothing and furniture, and assist in many other ways to help establish a better community. Later on, another St. Vincent de Paul Society was founded in San Francisco in 1860. The purpose of the Society is to help and support the neediest members of the community to become as independent as possible. The Society helps over 1,000 people in San Francisco every day, who are suffering from poverty, homelessness, substance abuse, and domestic violence. Social Justice Like the moment it was founded, the vision of St. Vincent de Paul Society hasn’t change at all, “to embrace the world in a network of charity.” The Society has set two goals to accomplish its vision: “to do a great deal of spiritual good to its members through the exercise of charity, and to do a little spiritual and temporal good to a few poor families in the name of Jesus Christ.” The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is composed of women and men who love...

Before and After the Cellphone

...Cellphones have gradually become an imperative part of peoples lives today. 70% of the world's population have cellphones. These days, people and their mobile phones seem to be inseparable. Texting or calling someone when we wake up has become a usual habit just like brushing our teeth in the morning. For many of us, it's hard to imagine a time before cellphones. Having a cellphone has changed our manners, the way we communicate, and our safety. Before cellphones there seemed to be more peace and quite. People seemed to have manners. Today people don't always remember their manners when using their cellphones. People constantly carrying on personal conversations in a public place can be very annoying. Some people talk really loud and don't care that everyone around them can hear every word they are saying. It can be extremely disturbing to someone when they are walking in a mall or down a street and someone starts speaking right beside or behind them. They turn to respond, only to find out he or she beside them has an earbud active. Before we had cellphones people would actually write letters. During my elementary school days it was “cool” to pass notes. We actually used complete sentences and words that were in the dictionary. Also before cellphones if someone was to leave the house, they didn’t make a phone call unless they popped 10 cents into a pay phone. People never received any calls away from home. People actually had to be out of touch with friends and family when...

Ethics - What It Is Not

...is defined as moral principles that govern a person’s behaviour or the conducting of an activity. This definition on its own does not tell us much about what ethics really is. If you try asking people what they think ethics is, you would also get many different answers. Just as in our ethics classes where different scenarios were put forward and we were required to evaluate the situation and take a stand based on what we believed, there were always opposing views. More interesting though, was the fact that even among the people in the same camp, the reasons that they based their decision on differed greatly. The common approach The three most common perceptions relate ethics to feelings and beliefs, following the law and what society accepts. Feelings and beliefs Our feelings and personal beliefs are probably the first things we consider when we come across a situation requiring us to make a choice. However, ethics is not the same as feelings and beliefs – that is, being ethical is not as clear cut as simply following one’s own feelings and beliefs. This is primarily due to the fact that feelings and beliefs are likely to be influenced by the environment we live in – our parents, our friends and our cultures, amongst others. Take for example a neglected child whose parents are criminals and are constantly committing crimes and going in and out of jail. It is possible that the child may grow up thinking that committing crimes is not necessarily a bad thing because he saw it happening...

...on intercultural relations tries to find the correlation between our ethnic background and interaction we have among other ethnic groups. While their findings are compelling, they are not surprising to find. While this article aims place some light on the issue of diversity and its function, it shows us a whole new different reality on ethnicity and race. Let us tackle diversity first. Diversity is merely a positive way to interact with other cultures; it is a form in which explores cultures at a surface level, while the predominant society places their own way of life on a pedestal. Multiculturalism it is called and it is greatly applauded by universities and many grassroots organizations. When this practice is looked at closely, it is the most racist practice out there. In a subtle manner, the predominant society celebrates an ethnic culture but treats it in an exotic manner. The predominant society treats the ethnic group no different than the hunter who captures a rare breed of tiger. The hunter will celebrate the strength and rarity of the tiger, but it will assure the crowd and the tiger that he is in control, by keeping him in a cage. The predominant society creates holidays which celebrates different ethnic groups, but while this is done a cultural hegemony is at hand. A system in which the current system places politics, religion, and economics to justify everything they do. The predominant society uses these components to create a cage in which to keep all ethnic...

Essay on the Importance of Discipline

...Discipline is the process of training oneself in obedience, self control, skill, etc. The controlled, ordered behavior results from such training. Discipline is the basis of the whole universe. The solar system is governed by certain laws to maintain perfect harmony and beauty. Without this order, there would be utter chaos. Discipline is a basic requirement of a civilized society. Citizens of a disciplined nation work with a spirit of cooperation and unity. Aristotle has rightly said, "Discipline is obedience to rules formed by the society for the good of all. Discipline should be inculcated from a very young age. Talent and genius alone are not enough to achieve success. Discipline has an equally important role to play. Talents blossom in a disciplined person. Liberty is highly cherished and mush valued privilege in our society. But absolute liberty is not possible. Discipline involves a restraint on liberty, which is necessary for the interest of society. Discipline has been found necessary for both individual and social welfare. Discipline and restraint were deemed essential in prehistoric time also and as society has become more and more complex, the urgency and importance of discipline has been felt all the more. Discipline is not only desirable but indispensable. Wherever discipline and regulation of human conduct are absent, moral and material deterioration has set in. Absence of discipline means decay. To prevent decay, discipline has to be imposed in the common interest...
