Man’s Best Friend

Dogs are said to be man’s best friend, but yet so many people are irresponsible dog owners. Dogs allowed by their owners to roam freely, and dogs who attack people, are often serious problems in communities. According to ASPCA (2012), “Breed specific legislation (BSL) is the blanket term for laws that either regulate or ban certain breeds completely in the hopes of reducing dog attacks” (para.2). However, from personal experience, BSL causes more problems for responsible dog owners than irresponsible owners. Breed specific legislation (BSL) includes breed banning and automatic labeling (Lynn Media Group, 2012). Breed bans prohibit future ownership and reproduction of certain breeds. Another type of breed law is to state a breed “dangerous” or “potentially dangerous.” Dog owners who own breeds considered “dangerous” must follow specific regulations set by their city. Many U.S cities have passed automatic labeling laws. Early October 2010, my boyfriend, Mark and I, moved from Baton Rouge to Denham Springs. We found a reasonably sized house on a well-maintained piece of land available for rent. I was eager to leave our city lives and move to the small community of Denham Springs. Little did Mark and I know how difficult it would be to move one town over with our Doberman pinscher, Zeus. The landlord, Mark, and I met to review the lease and discuss concerns or questions. At that time, Mark and I were informed about renters insurance and position on dogs. Dobermans are considered “dangerous,” and if Mark and I wanted the house we only had two choices; keep Zeus or get rid of Zeus. If we kept Zeus, we would need liability insurance and an eight-foot high fence enclosing the back door. Mark and I knew we did not want to get rid of Zeus. The following day, we signed the lease agreement and made the changes to keep Zeus. We purchased a $500,000 dog bite liability insurance policy and built an eight-foot high fence that enclosed the back door. The insurance charges and fence cost us nearly an additional $1,000 we were not prepared to spend. The stipulations for owning a “dangerous” breed may seem reasonable. However, Zeus never bit anyone or showed signs of aggression. Zeus is well-taken care of and loves people. The stipulations are unfair to dog owners who are responsible. BSL supporters are blinded by certain bans and unaware of the dangesr behind these laws. Faithful, loving, and responsible dog owners could be forced to give away their dog if the city places breed ban laws. The dog goes from a loving home to an irresponsible home. Irresponsible people could be encouraged to own banned or dangerous breeds. Responsible owners could hide their dogs and limit outdoor time, in efforts to avoid getting caught, if their dog is a banned breed. Animal control officers could be too focused on certain breeds, but not all dog breeds. The laws discriminate and automatically label certain dog breeds dangerous, like Dobermans, Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, and German Shepard. According to "What's The Alternative To Breed-Specific Laws?" (2012), "Many other factors beyond breed may affect a dog’s tendency toward aggression—things such as heredity, sex, early experience, reproductive status, socialization and training” (In the aforementioned study). Enforcing local leash laws, making fines higher and making spaying or neutering mandatory could all pose as valid alternatives to BSL. Dog owners should be held responsible when their dog attacks, not the breeds. Any dog can bite but good owners should not have to pay for extra insurance just because of the breed. I disagree with the breed laws. The laws discriminate and profile against dog breeds, and not by the actions of the dog. My faithful dog, Zeus is loyal and well-behaved. In the future, breed restriction laws may force me to get rid of Zeus, because he is a Doberman. BSL takes certain breeds from loving homes, but yet laws take dogs from bad homes. More time and money could be spent on getting dogs out of bad homes and leaving certain breeds where they are. The ASPCA has numerous sites to help voice personal opinions and stand against BSL. A dog is a man’s best friend and should be treated as such.

...Indian” (2010) page 49-51 written by Sherman Alexie, the narrator Arnold Spirit also known as Junior claims that Indians were worst of times because they have forgotten how to dream and hope while the whites are best of times because they have full of hope which is what makes things happen. The Indians never care to dream because they are surrounded by hopelessness, they have forgotten how to dream and hope. But the Reardan kids who represent the whites, they dared to dream because they were surrounded by beauty, they were smart, magnificent and ambitious. Although sometimes Arnold also lies and plays some tricks, he works hard to prove himself, to gain respect and to make friends. It’s a big challenge, but well worth the effort. On the other hand, the internal conflict is the difficulties of creating Arnold’s own autonomy while being faithful to his tribe. Arnold refuses to give up but at the cost of losing his best friend and being considered to betray his tribe. I don’t think this conflict can be resolved only through Arnold’s hard work; it also relies on others’ understanding. I’ll never forget what Rowdy says to Arnold, “You’re an old-time nomad.” It seems Rowdy finally forgives Arnold but I think Rowdy has never really get mad at Arnold. They’re truly best friends. unior transforms from a socially awkward and self-conscious boy to a...

6 Types of Toxic Friends

...1. The Promise Breaker This friend constantly disappoints you or breaks promises, most likely because she herself was constantly disappointed during her formative years. Your friend is unable to stop herself from repeating that pattern. It is an annoying but comfortable pattern for your friend, and without psychological help, it may be hard for her or him to alter this pattern. You could abandon the friend and the friendship, or you could find a way to detach yourself by lowering your expectations for this friendship. If she promises to do something for you, even to meet you for a cup of coffee, you can say, "Sure," but protect yourself by knowing, in the back of your mind, that this friend "nine times out of 10" is going to cancel on you. Although your friend may always have been this way, she may have also recently acquired this trait because of something she is going through right now. If a friend who has always been there for you, through thick and thin, has only recently become less reliable, you might want to cut her some slack. You have to decide if this is a lifelong trait that will be hard or impossible to change, a temporary condition that will be short-lived, or something, if it does continue indefinitely, that you are willing to accept and handle. One way to try to change the Promise Breaker is to help her to understand the consequences of your ignored pledges. Perhaps you have been keeping your disappointments about this to yourself. Try telling her how it...

...could turn time back.” I don’t remember the last time I believed in the quotation “Nobody is perfect”, because after meeting her, all I can manage to utter was perfection. I think I found it in a girl I loved since I was ten. I love the way she laughs at me when I commit mistakes, the way she fusses over silly things and even the way she cries over some sad silly late night show. Somehow, I wished I could have told her that I love her but now there was no hope in doing so. For now, it’s rather too late – too late for me to do so. She was my best friend and I have known her since we were small. She knew all my secrets, which reveals my feelings for her, that I love her not only because she's pretty and smart but also the way she laughs at everything and the way she sees life and love. I could still remember the first time we met; I was five years old then. It was one windy afternoon having no one to play with except for my best friend, Logan. He and his family just moved out to transfer at a neighboring state because his father got promoted. And so I climbed up our tree house, I saw a moving truck coming down the street. I watched it approaching and noticed a family station wagon following it. It stopped in front of the house and out came a family. I was about to glance away when out came the loveliest girl I have ever seen. She was four years old that time but then even at an early age she was a beauty. She had long...

...Sunday night procrastination panic mode. Either way I was going to be panicking in some way or form. As I sat inside Love Library on a Thursday night, deciding on powering through the mountain of work, my phone buzzes twice, indicating I had a text. I look over at it and see a text from my friends back home in Dallas. I can’t help but smile and look over and see a screen shot of a picture of all 5 of us back in high school during our F5GNO sleepovers. The picture is of us posing altogether in front of Cheesecake Factory, thinking we were the coolest people to walk on earth. At the time, being only 16 years old, we felt like we ruled the world. “Are you guys ready?” as I read the group text from my best friend Kourtney. We called her KHam on all of our phones just cause we all had our own little nicknames for one another. It was the summer of 2010 before we all headed off to college. We all knew that our last days with each other were soon approaching, but it didn’t stop us from seeing each other every day practically and making plans and having sleepovers. “I’m about to leave to pick up Dahlia,” I texted back as I was heading out for the night. These four girls have been my best friends since the beginning of high school and any night spent with them was always a great story to joke and laugh about days later. “I’m leaving my house right now, should I pick up anything?” as Korrin or aka Korn as we called her texted to us. “Picking up anything,” indicated alcohol, but it...

Analysis Of Joyce Carol Oates 'Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?'

.... . initiation" (Winslow 238). Somehow Friend is "the answer to Connie's unuttered call and to her erotic desires" (Tierce and Crafton 724). But reducing the story to a tale of mere sexuality is an oversimplification that denies the true power of the piece. Analysts contend that the numbers on Friend's car "add up to 69" (Winslow 239), and his verbal threat to her "is explicitly sexual" (Winslow 239) in nature. Yet these numbers could mean anything; they could be the age of himself and his victims, they could be a secret code only he knows. The numbers are not definitively sexual. Friend's threat to Connie is, on the very basic surface, sexual. But his imposition on her goes far deeper than that. The story is not about Connie's innocence only in terms of sexual matters, although that is a part of it. It is about Connie's youthful incompetence of all things in life. "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" deals with Connie's interaction with life in all its facets. Consequently, Friend's invasion of Connie's world is not a purely sexual one, although it does simplify the story to say so. Friend invades her home property and threatens her family and illusion of love and life. Her house becomes, as a result of Friend's appearance, "nothing but a...

...parents included, why I loved him. That evening was a celebration of the life of my boyfriend, Parker. He had died in a swimming accident that summer, trying to save the life of a friend. A deep breath in, a deep breath out, and I began to speak, seeing his mother’s tearstained face in the patches of my vision unclouded by the lights. I concentrated my thoughts and words on the qualities he had in abundance: his energy, his generosity, his good humor, his talent, and his passion for life. I felt a desperate need to express myself to all the people gathered to remember him, to remind them of him. But I left out so much. The words I spoke were light, reminding everyone of his humor, making them laugh quietly through their tears. I didn’t speak of the two days in which I had waited, with bated breath and breaking heart, to know whether he lived or died. A chance meeting with a member of his church had informed me of only the slightest details of the accident. Being half a world away, with his family in the process of moving, I was left scrambling to contact anyone who could tell me what happened. I needed to hear something, anything, to dispel the nameless fears running through my mind. How was I to describe those hours of waiting to that audience? Of sitting in a darkened room with his best friend, alternately sobbing and seeking to comfort? Those words, had I found them, would not have been suitable for my speech, and so they were not spoken.
