Marcus and Simon

Case Study (Draft)

As part of Core Ethical values, it is recommended that employees exercise good judgment in their professional practices and abide by all ethical principles as laid out in Company’s code of conduct manual. It is all employees’ responsibility to adhere to a high level of honesty, integrity and self-discipline at the work place.
In the case of Marcus and Simon, I think Simon should “Take the Bull by the horns” and do what is appropriate in the interest of fairness and for the good of the Company and public at large. Marcus may have been a friendly boss, and Godfather to Simon’s two children. He should lean more towards loyalty to the profession. It is true that Marcus is an even-tempered man and a real professional. That notwithstanding, the quality of his work has begun to slide and if proper action is not taken, it could lead to a catastrophic end of the company. Marcus is going through serious personal struggle. Marcus’ marriage of twenty years is ending abruptly due to infidelity on the part of his wife. The situation is taking a toll on him, and negatively impacting his job performance.
Several Marcus’ colleagues have become aware of what he is going through and offered to help but he declined their offer. This could be pried taking over common sense.
I believe Simon should follow his hunch that if proper action is not taken, Marcus’ errors will impact the firm and will in turn have terrible consequences for both the public and the company. Simon should call a meeting of all the employees, suggest that they offer Marcus a paid counseling session and time off to help him deal with his situation and return to work later in the year

Rowan Ashe Narrative

...almost pasty complexion was blessedly free of the acne that troubled so many of her contemporaries. Her nose was long and thin, her lips thin too. She had no chest to speak of and feet that were huge and looked like boats. About her looks Rowan often said that on a good day, she might pass for pretty, but the good days were few and far between. Rowan’s family, her father, older brother and little sister, was typical, too. Her father, Simon, was the manager of their small town’s savings and loan association. He was six feet, two inches tall and slender of build. Handsome in a washed out sort of way, he had slightly thinning, sandy blonde hair, and what used to be known as a forceful chin. His eyes, his most arresting feature, were a glittering, silvery gray that darkened to charcoal whenever Simon was under the influence of strong emotions. During Rowan’s childhood, Simon had been a genial, outgoing, larger-than life sort of man, with an easy smile and a great deal of charm that drew people to him. But with her mother’s passing seven years ago, Simon had withdrawn into himself and was now just a shadow of the person that he had formerly been. Still, he was a good man and a good father, and his children loved him very much. To Rowan, her eight year-old little sister, Annabelle Leigh was, quite simply, the most annoying creature ever to walk the face of the earth. While most people believed Annabelle Leigh, with her curling titian hair and glowing green eyes was the perfect picture...

...(October 16, 2016; 7:51 pm) http://digjamaica.com/rastafarianism Rastafarianism began in Jamaica during the 1930s after the crowing of Ras Tafari as Negus of Ethiopia, “King of Kings”. After the coronation his title was changed to Emperor Haile Selassie I. Selassie also took the titles, "Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah, Elect of God and King of the Kings of Ethiopia." This coronation was regarded as the fulfillment of a prophecy by black political leader, Marcus Garvey, that “Princes shall come out of Egypt; Ethiopia shall soon stretch out her hands unto God”, which is based on verse 31 of Psalm 68 of the Bible. This prophecy became the foundation of the Rastafari movement. The religion takes its name from Haile Selassie's original name, Ras Tafari Makonnen. Selassie is regarded by Rastafarians as the Black Messiah or Jah Rastafari. He is the central figure of salvation who will save blacks from white suppressors and reunite them with their homeland, Africa. LEADERS OF RASTA Leonard P. Howell is said to have had the greatest impact on the development of Rastafarian ideology in Jamaica in the 1930s. Howell, who had served in the third Ashanti War between England and Ghana in the Gold Coast in 1901, preached the divinity of Haile Selassie and said that blacks would gain the superiority over their oppressors, who are referred to as ‘Babylon’. THE ROYAL VISIT In 1966, after persons who had heard of Haile Selassie’s visit to Trinidad requested that he make a stopover...

Malcom X

...Malcolm X Malcolm X was a well-known civil rights movement leader as well as a great Black Muslim as well as a smart and powerful man. He was born as Malcolm Little in Omaha, Nebraska on May 19, 1925 to his parents Louis and Earl Little. His father was a well-known Christian preacher who followed the teachings of Marcus Garvey a former well established African American leader. Growing up and watching his father’s sermons would add to his knowledge of the racial tensions he would soon be faced with as he got older. His mother Louis Little was the product of the slave and master relations as she was mulatto and she hated herself for it as this also was a cause to his inspiration to become a serious activists in the civil rights movement. As he grew up he did very well academically and was very well liked by the whites who accepted him due to his lighter skin tone but as time went on he became very street minded in his ways as he grew up as a thief and street hustler as well as a pimp and drug dealer. All those events led him to prison where he was sentenced to 10 years and in that 10 years he became a changed man by joining the Nation of Islam and becoming a Black Muslim. He then changed his last name from Little to X as he did not want to take the name of a prior slave owner of his ancestors and eventually went on to become one of civil rights movement top respected leaders. I believe Malcolm X should be remembered by his successes such as his evolvement from a street minded...

Juvenile Delinquency In The United States

...Their research tells us that psychological problems were very popular in children under the age of eighteen. Also, they wanted people to know that family environment was the most important determinant of delinquent behavior. According to Simon & Wallace (2004)” They completed several large-scale studies in our attempt to identify the causes of juvenile delinquency and adult crime (see Laub and Sampson, 1988, 1991). Compared with other studies completed during this period, the Glueck’s research projects were based on unusually large samples, utilized a variety of sources of information, and involved the collection of extensive follow-up data (pg. 16-7). After numerous studies, they come up with three family factors that play a huge role between parenting and child delinquency. These factors were parental supervision, disciplinary practices, and child parent attachment. The Glueck’s position on child delinquency tells us that parent and children relationship is very important. For...

Augustus Caesar

...Augustus Caesar Born Gaius Octavius, Augustus was born in September of 63 B.C. Octavius' father, Gaius Octavius, was a praetor for two years until he died in 58 B.C. Therefore, Octavius grew up without a father for most of his life. Through Octavius' long life of seventy-seventy years, he accomplished a great deal. He reduced the size of the Senate, he was an integral part of the second triumvirate, and he was elected the Pontifex Maximus, just to name a few of these accomplishments. Octavius received the name Augustus by holding the consulship and receiving various awards. This title was not given out to just anyone. In order to receive this title, one must be a large contributor to the city (Boardman 533-534). Octavius Caesar was related to the famous Julius Caesar through Octavius' mother. Atria was Octavius' grandmother and Julius Caesar's sister, therefore making Octavius his great-nephew. When Julius Caesar was murdered in 44 B.C., his will read that Octavius was to be adopted by him, making Octavius his son and heir to the Roman Empire. Also, in his will it stated that every citizen of Rome would receive a cash gift. Octavius rushed to Rome to take his throne, but when he arrived in Rome, he realized the Antony had already taken control of the city. He could not persuade Antony to release the money in Julius Caesar's treasury so he had to borrow all the money he could to give the gifts to the citizens. Julius Octavius Caesar was only eighteen when he was thrust...

Ai Robot

...AI robot: how machine intelligence is evolving No computer can yet pass the 'Turing test' and be taken as human. But the hunt for artificial intelligence is moving in a different, exciting direction that involves creativity, language – and even jazz • Comments (109) • Marcus du Sautoy • The Observer, Saturday 31 March 2012 • Article history [pic] Marcus du Sautoy with one of Luc Steels's language-making robots. Photograph: Jodie Adams/BBC 'I propose to consider the question "Can machines think?"' Not my question but the opening of Alan Turing's seminal 1950 paper which is generally regarded as the catalyst for the modern quest to create artificial intelligence. His question was inspired by a book he had been given at the age of 10: Natural Wonders Every Child Should Know by Edwin Tenney Brewster. The book was packed with nuggets that fired the young Turing's imagination including the following provocative statement: "Of course the body is a machine. It is vastly complex, many times more complicated than any machine ever made with hands; but still after all a machine. It has been likened to a steam machine. But that was before we knew as much about the way it works as we know now. It really is a gas engine; like the engine of an automobile, a motor boat or a flying machine." If the body were a machine, Turing wondered: is it possible to artificially create such a contraption that could think like he did? This year is Turing's centenary so would he...

...Attract the Attractive Rupavilas Patel Kaplan University Over the years, the world has moved through the Industrial Age to what is now called the Informational Age. The world has transfused from an age based largely on manpower to an age based on brainpower. This brainpower is cannot be quantified but it can be categorized as a companies intangible assets. This means that over the years the market value that was related to tangible assets has decreased and there has been an increase in intangible assets. The percent of market value related to tangible assets in 1982 was about 62 percent, and the intangible assets were made up of about 38 percent. Then in 2000, we could see a significant transformation towards intangibles. There was only 15 percent of market value associated with tangible, while 85 percent was tied to intangibles (Ulrich, Smallwood, 2003). This pattern shows how the world has changed in terms of where the actual assets of a company are held. The value of tangible assets has significantly decreased relative to the intangible assets. These assets include, but are limited to, assets like intellectual property or capital, brand name, and innovative thoughts. The main thing that causes these intangibles to exist is the ability a company has in attracting talent. So now that we have seen this transformation from tangibles to intangibles we should understand how intangible effect a company. These intangible assets are directly affecting how well a company...

...Title: Outline the benefits of an Exercise programme for people with Cystic Fibrosis and discuss the factors which may influence Exercise compliance. Introduction Cystic fibrosis (CF) is one of the most common and life limiting autosmal recessively inherited diseases in the world with an estimated occurrence in newborns of 1 per 3000 per annum (Walters, 2007). The majority of people with this disease are diagnosed during their first year of life with many countries now employing newborn screening programs. The basic mechanism of the disease consists of manifestation as pancreatic insufficiency leading to malabsorbtion and failure to thrive and impaired mucocillary clearance leading to reoccurring chest infections and bronchiestasis (Savage et al. 2011). With the recent advances in treatment of CF which have resulted in increased life span and survival rates, individuals can now expect to live into their fourth decade. Stats from the UK show that CF affects over 9000 people with 4000 under the age of 16 (Williams and Stevens, 2013). Irish stats show a similar pattern where 1200 individuals suffer from CF with 45% being under the age of 18. According to the CF trust (2010) the primary cause of death in individuals with CF is respiratory failure. CF is a progressive respiratory disease which results in an abnormal ventilator response to exercise for individuals with CF (Bradley and Moran, 2008). This contributes to dyspnoea which is a shortness of breath and is a major limiting...
