...that have legalized marijuana for medicinal purposes only, for Washington and Colorado they have legalized it for recreational use (ProCon.org). There is a tremendous problem with marijuana in today’s society; people get arrested every day for this so called “crime.” This to most states is no longer a crime, being that most states are just starting to de-criminalize marijuana instead of legalizing marijuana. De-criminalization is not the same as legalization. De-criminalization determines whether or not someone should be taken to jail or not, all depending on the amount of marijuana they have on them. “De-criminalization means that a state repealed or amended its laws to make certain acts criminal, but no longer subject to prosecution. In the marijuana context, this means individuals caught with small amounts of marijuana for personal consumption won’t be prosecuted and won’t subsequently receive a criminal record or a jail sentence. In many states, possession of small amounts of marijuana is treated like a minor traffic violation” (Reuters). Marijuana should be legalized throughout the whole United States for three major reasons: money for the government, dropping crime rate, and medical conditions. Marijuana can be used as a medicine for the sick and for people with chronic pain issues or even anxiety. With the legalization of marijuana our crime rate will drop tremendously, as well as the government also benefiting from the legalization of marijuana financially. First...

The Legalization of Marijuana

...choose the topic of Legalizing Marijuana because the debate of whether marijuana should be legalized is an ongoing argument in the United States. Also, it has always bothered me how harshly marijuana is prosecuted in this country. While researching the subject of legalizing marijuana I wanted to find out exactly how much tax money was spent on prosecuting nonviolent marijuana offenders, how marijuana became illegal and how marijuana could help our economy if legalized. The results from my research were astounding to me. It was a shock to know that while alcohol was deemed illegal at one point marijuana was completely legal. I expected to prove my thesis, but I was not prepared for so much information that leads me to believe and become active in the cause for legalization. Although there is much opposition, I am very confident that the legalization of marijuana will not be too far away. Marijuana Is Safer Than Alcohol

...Marijuana should be legalized for recreational purposes to anyone over 21 years of age. Jason Anderson COM/156 MARCH 2, 2011 Colleen Vosicky Marijuana should be legalized for recreational purposes to anyone over 21 years of age. Marijuana has been proven to be safer than alcohol, yet marijuana is against the law. Alcohol is known to contribute to acts of violence and crime, while in most cases cannabis can reduce aggression in its users. “In last year’s cases of reported violent crime three million offenders had been drinking. Almost all cases of date rape, sexual assault, and domestic violence had some kind of connection to alcohol” (Medical Fact: Marijuana is Safer Than Alcohol, 2009). Marijuana has not been linked or has been left absent from any of those type of crime reports. Alcohol-related traffic accidents have gone down in the past 20 to 30 years; however, they still kill approximately 14,000 lives every year according to MADD. The numbers for THC-related traffic deaths are very rare because most of the deaths in these cases the driver was also under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. However, “there is evidence from a number of studies, including some laboratory simulations that give power to the idea that people under the influence of cannabis seem to be aware of their impaired motor skills, and two tend to drive below the posted speed limit. People under the influence of alcohol are more likely to unaware or defiant about their impaired state...

...Medical Marijuana Legalization The debate over whether marijuana should be legalized has long troubled many American citizens. There are many political aspects that have to be taken into account when making a big federal decision such as this. However, long before America was even an idea, many cultures had harnessed the plant, and used it for many primitive medical procedures. Within certain states it is legal to use marijuana for medical treatments, but this is a relatively new idea in the United States. However, marijuana was not always deemed an illegal substance and because of its inherent medical value should be legalized at the federal level. Many ancient civilizations have been unearthed and found to have used marijuana in medical practices dating all the way back to 8000 B.C. Some of the more notable civilizations who used the plant include the Egyptians who used it to treat sore eyes, the Indians who mixed marijuana and milk to create a primitive anesthetic, and the Greeks who found a way to remedy earaches with the plants properties(Webley 1). Even the Chinese emperor Shen-Nung was known to prescribe it as medicine to many people almost 5 millennia ago(Bostwick 173). Therefore, it can be argued that historically, marijuana has been a crucial influence on some modern day medical treatments. It wasn't until 1930 when a man named Harry J. Anslinger was given the position of Director of Klein 2 Narcotics did marijuana become...

Timothy Fichtler Professor Bekker Psychology 101 February 15, 2011 PS101S General Psychology Research Question: Can marijuana reduce pain in patients with neuropathic pain? Johnson, J.R. (2009). Study of the Efficacy, Safety, and Tolerability of THC. Journal of Pain and Symptom Management The main purpose of this article was to determine what effect marijuana had on subjects with neuropathic pain. A key question the author looked at was whether or not marijuana use would relieve patients with advanced cancer-related pain. Participants were either given a placebo or marijuana in the study. Patients who received marijuana reported significantly greater pain reduction than the group that received the placebo. The experimenters used the pain Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) to determine the results of the study. Doctor Johnson concluded that THC from marijuana is very effective at treating cancer patients whose pain is not fully relieved by opioids. Future research should use marijuana in treating diseases other than cancer that cause unbearable pain to patients. Ellis, R.J. (2008). Although there are several states across the United States that have now legalized marijuana for medical use beginning in 1996. Today it is still considered illegal by the United States federal government, and some other parts of the world. Legalization of Marijuana

...Legalization of Marijuana Medical and Recreational Uses Cullen Fitzsimmons ITT Technical Institute Authors Note This research is being submitted on August 17, 2015 to Hugo McPhee’s GS1145 course at ITT Technical Institute by Cullen Fitzsimmons. Abstract I decided that a very controversial subject was that of the legalization of Marijuana, both for medical and recreational use. I found that there are many health benefits to medical marijuana. There also can be many benefits to the recreational use/sale of marijuana. Like all controversial topics there cannot be positives without the negatives. Some of the negatives are accessibility to children, gateway drug and impaired driving. The legalization of marijuana has been a long debated and often heated subject. The federal government has not legalized the recreational use of Marijuana, but that did not stop four states from legalizing it with in their own borders. Through the course of this paper I tend to discuss the many pros and cons of the legalization of Marijuana. There are two main ways of legalizing marijuana; medical use and recreational use. Positives Currently there are four states and Washington D.C. that have passed the legal right to recreational marijuana, Alaska, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington. Besides the medical benefits from marijuana there are also multiple reason why making it legal is a good thing. Colorado has seen a recent drop in crime rate. According to Rough (2015) “violent crime...
