Identical: Who’s Happy and Who Just Looks It?
In the first photograph by Mario Testino there are two heavier set Latin twins standing in the middle of the picture with an arm wrapped around the other and biggest of smiles upon their faces. Both of the men are wearing shorts, one of the men has flip flops on and the other is barefoot. They appear to have just gotten out of the water somewhere by the way the sand is sticking to them. In the background there is a construction truck, which would make most observers think that they were in some sort of construction area. However no construction worker would be barefoot or in sandals in a work zone, considering that could be extremely hazardous. Although the men in the picture are twins and both have huge smiles upon their faces you can tell that each of them have very different personalities by the way their smiles differentiate. The twin on the right with a more open mouthed smile almost as if he’s shouting “Hey!” or something similar, and the other on the left with a more goofy smile, face constricted, almost like he’s laughing at his brother.
In the second photograph there are two beautiful twin girls that look like models wearing almost identical outfits. One of the twins is wearing a dress that splits mid-thigh she also has her hair pulled back with a black fitted cap on top. The other twin is wearing a similar dress that cuts off mid-thigh with black loosely fitted pants underneath, she is not wearing a cap unlike her twin, or perhaps she is and is already wearing a wig on top of it. Both girls in the photograph are not making eye contact with the photographer
Simmons 2 which gives the effect that the photo was taken randomly, however the way both of their hands are poised say otherwise. Unlike the first photograph both girls look the same and appear to have similar personality traits, which come across as fake.
Both photographs contain a set of twins yet both photographs bring very different feeling He first shows lower class twins with huge realistic smiles that seem to be enjoying life posing for their picture. Then he shows the twins that look like they are about to hit the runway. They appear happy until you look further and see their identical smiles and poised hands in a photograph meant to seem as if it was taken at random. By doing this Mario Testino is trying to convey that although the glamorous lifestyle may seem to bring happiness, it really only brings the façade of it. He is trying to show that true happiness comes when people find joy in the honesty of who they really are, inside and out.
