Marlowe and Breeze have had their differences since Breeze was introduced in the novel. Both characters have impacted the plot and have their own way of sorting out problems. Being a public detective, Breeze has taught himself how to solve problems quickly, even if the true murderer isn’t caught. Marlowe is a private detective that works carefully and consciously to uncover the truth at all costs. Both characters are equally intelligent and they are constantly at each other’s throats trying to outsmart the other one. In difficult situations they put on a poker face so they don’t reveal their true purpose. This is not simply a good cop, bad cop feud, but a feud between getting justice and completing a case. When Breeze comes to visit Marlowe he tells Marlowe, “We didn’t come here to get tough,” which shows that Breeze doesn’t like any funny business (Chandler, 111). Breeze is the type of cop that wants to get down to the point. His personality is very serious and he rarely has time to joke around. Marlowe is the opposite of Breeze. During their conversation together, Breeze asked, “Murder ain’t funny, Marlowe; don’t you kind of act as if it was” (Chandler, 112)? Marlowe’s personality is sarcastic and almost silly. He throws a sarcastic remark in with every person he speaks with. Marlowe also likes to lighten moods with his sarcasm. Marlowe’s advantage over Breeze is that he knows when to use it and when to be serious. Since Breeze is serious all the time, he most likely doesn’t get along with many people. Marlowe, on the other hand, can communicate with others without being stern. He understands that people must like him in order for him to have jobs, Breeze doesn’t care how he acts because he has a job regardless of how well liked he is. Marlowe adds entertainment to the story while Breeze adds seriousness. This makes the story more interesting because we have a little bit of comic
