Observe a strong marriage and you will find two people who effectively communicate. Conversely, a marriage on the rocks more often than not suffers from a lack of or ineffective communication. My own marriage failed initially, but recently we reunited more committed than ever to make this union last for our lifetimes. This class started right at the onset of our remarriage and I believe it was a Godsend to aid us with a plan of action aimed at developing a strong marriage this time around. There are several areas to be covered regarding our relationship that will reveal the strengths and weaknesses we have. After discussing I will share goals to improve and strengthen our relationship.
Mate Selection My wife and I come from very similar backgrounds, yet think very differently when it comes to how we relate to family. My wife comes from a single parent home and has really close ties with her extended family. She, her sister, aunts and female cousins shared a lot of childhood experiences while growing up which formed a close knit long lasting bond with one another. Similarly, I too was raised by a single parent; my mother, who has gone on to be with God. I have two brothers (of which I am the second born) and I keep my inner circle small. Unlike my wife, I relate only to my brothers, my nieces and nephews; I care not for extended family interactions.
Our selection of each other was probably more of a social structural perspective rather than evolutionary. We felt we had a lot in common, and both had the same core beliefs. But we failed to weigh or even consider our differences and how we would deal with them.
Communication Patterns Our communication patterns can use a bit of work and we are set to learn how to be better at it. We tend to debate instead of talk. A lot of times the smallest thing becomes debatable which sometimes escalate to disagreements and

Polyandry Marraige

...MARRIAGE At the end of page one in the article “When Brothers Share a Wife” it says “The Tibetans’ own explanation for choosing fraternal polyandry is materialistic.” Tibetans typically choose this marriage style so that it prevents the division of their family’s farms and livestock. The ultimate goal is to achieve a higher standard of living. If the Tibetans practiced monogamous marriages, then their inherited land would be spilt up between them. Their grandchildren would end up owning very little pieces of property. This would be frowned upon in the society and those same grandchildren would probably have a hard time finding a wife to marry them. After carefully reading this article, I found that the perspective of culture that best explained why this polyandry situation exists is cultural materialism. Culture materialism is defined as; cultural traits are based on the resources available to a group. Tibetans have limited resources given to each family and in order for them to have a large share; it is in their best interest to practice polyandry. This displays culture materialism. Being that the Tibetan’s polyandry is due to cultural materialism, I can definitely see why that type of marriage works. The climate in Tibet is extremely harsh and I could imagine that large plots of land are not easy to come by. It would stand logic to marry a set of brothers versus only one that way you could keep all of the family land in one marriage. Having a lot of land in one marriage...

...'That the Australian Government legalise gay marriage in all states of Australia.' Which couple do you think is happier? Which couple do you think has the right to the security of marriage? Today I want to explain the very prevalent issue of gay marriage and what it means to gay couples, couples like the one in the photo. So what is gay marriage? What is the issue that people have been so strongly for and against? In Australian it is the federal legislation of same sex marriage. Through the alteration of the marriage act to include the marriage of same sex couples. In doing so affording the same rights to gay couples as straight couples. The main grounds people provide to why we shouldn’t allow gay marriage is that marriage is a community and religious value that only a man and a woman have the right to. In our society we also believe in the power of racial, social and religious equality so why do we continue to discriminate against gays and they’re right to marriage. I agree with the people that say marriage is a community value, Marriage holds together society and is at the core of the Australian family, but were I disagree is on the point that it should only be between a man and a woman. Why should such a valued and cherished thing like marriage be deprived to people simply because of there sexuality? The answer to that is it shouldn’t be, it shouldn’t be because the love between a woman and a man and two men or women is the same, because love is unconditional and...

Legal Marraige

..."This type of legal marriage must be forbidden simply because natural instinct revolts at it as wrong." Rep. Sen. WI -- c.1934. This quote can be interpreted in many different ways. When we first heard it in class everyone thought it was about gay marriage, we soon learned what this quote was truly about. Senator Wisconsin said this in 1934 about interracial marriage. There are many similarities in the arguments between the ban on interracial marriage and same sex marriage as well as differences. When we first heard the quote we all jumped to conclusions and thought it was about gay marriage because that is a problem we are facing today. There are laws against people who are gay and want to get married. Just like there were laws against interracial marriage in the 1930’s when the quote was said. In the 1930’s most people did not like when Blacks and Whites got married. They did not think it was normal because they thought everyone should marry within there own race, particularly with whites and black. Both interracial marriage and gay marriage are against social norms at one point or another. “The Norm” changes constantly and it is different everywhere you go. For a long time, gay people would not “come out” to their friend’s or families because it was not socially acceptable to be gay. It was the same for interracial couples back in the 1930’s. In New York they finally passed the law and gays can get married legally, where as in Arizona you cannot be gay and get married...

Same Sex Marraige

...Same Sex Marriage should be legal for many reasons. For example if two of the same sex want children they can adopt. Also if a man and a woman can get married then two of the same sex should also have the equal right to get married. Some people will realize that they are gay before getting married to the opposite sex, so divorce rates will decrease. If people of the same sex are going to have children anyway, then why not let them get married to help them support there child. Also for example Kara and Miranda fell in love at first site and decided to get married.Last summer they held a ceremony on the west coast near glass beach. All of their family and friends attended. After the reception, the two went on their honeymoon. When they returned, they felt like a married couple. They moved in together, opened their gifts and started talking about having a baby.Although the couple feel committed to each other, they have no equal right to protect there marriage like a man and a women would have.If Miranda was giving birth to there child then Kara wouldn’t have the right to be with her in the hospital. If Miranda died during birth, her distant nieces and nephews have more of a clam to her belongings than Kara does. They both file “single” on their tax returns and are not allowed to be on each others car insurance or health...

Same Sex Marraige

...Merrie Hill Final research paper Same sex marriage has been a hot topic in the news lately, as well as in the political arena. Marriage between a man and a man or a woman and a woman are felt by many to be morally wrong, but is it really? Or do these people fear the unknown and are using morality as the excuse for their negligence of the unknown? The utilitarian follow the utilitarian moral guide lines in their beliefs utilitarian’s would not be against same sex marriages. However if the Ethical egoist follows their moral guide lines then it is believed that they would be against same sex marriages. In this paper I am going to try to show you what has brought me to these beliefs and how I believe ones morals may differ in the pursuit of society’s happiness. Utilitarianism is about obtaining the greatest good for the greatest number of people. With that said utilitarian’s would not be against two people in love, joining together in the sanctity of marriage. According to Webster’s dictionary utilitarianism is defined as: “a theory that the aim of action should be the largest possible balance of pleasure over pain, or the greatest happiness of the greatest number.” Our ethic’s book Ethics Theory and Practice tenth edition (Thiroux and Krasemann 2009 page 317), “the basic argument against the morality of homosexuality is that it is unnatural and perverse; that is, it...

All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, but are we allowing gays in New Zealand this? New Zealand recognises Civil Unions; however I understand that Same Sex couples who enter into a civil union are denied equal access to all the benefits, rights, and privileges provided by law to married couples. Because of this, it stands to reason that legalized gay marriage will ultimately prove beneficial for gay individuals. This, in turn, will be better for gay couples, the families of them, and communities where same sex couples live. It is basic a human right for non-discriminable marriage and New Zealand needs to set an example for other countries that also deny same sex Couples this right. Because of this, it stands to reason that legalized gay marriage will ultimately prove beneficial for gay individuals. This, in turn, will...

Rebuttal on Gay Marraige Editorial Article

...William J Bennett Article Rebuttal Dalila Solis BCOM/275 June 18, 2012 Robert Beaudry William J. Bennett Article Rebuttal Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are not dictated by one’s sexual preferences let alone sexism or racism but by ones will to live and love. Over the centuries, society has evolved to allow for corrections to inequalities. Changes such as women’s rights and minority rights have changed to reflect human equality. Reading the Gay Marriage: Not a Very Good Idea article was a bit disturbing to me since I believe in human rights and equality. The rights for woman and the rights for males regardless of the their sexual preferences are being violated based on our constitution as it pertains to choosing who we want to partner with. The institution of marriage is an exclusive relationship in which one individual commits to another in mind, body and soul in a joint venture of their lives. Laws against same sex marriage exposes hatred and inequality to said individuals due to the nature of their union (male – male, female – female). The opposition to gay marriages contradicts our views on equality as stated in our constitution. Devaluation, as stated by Bennett (1996), of marriage because of sexual revolution is essentially stating that each individual is striped of his or her rights once they join in same sex marriage because the value of marriage has been tainted. Traditionally, marriage meant to bring businesses...

Homosexuality in Advertising and Mass Media.

...Homosexuality in advertising and mass media. The growing momentum worldwide considering gay rights issues and gay marraige legislation shows that there is growing mainstream accaptance of homosexualtiy. The demand for change came to light in the 1970s. Since then much of the world has become more accepting of homosexuality between same sex partners of a legal age. In 2007 the Pew Research Centre carried out a Global Attitudes Survey. They found that while people in Africa and the Middle East had strong objections to homosexual behaviour, its acceptance was much higher in Western and Northern Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Northwestern United States and much of Latin America. This groundbreaking survey found that 70% of ‘Millennials’ which are people in the 18-32 age demographic are in favour of same sex marraige. This is significant as Millennials take up 27% of the adult population today compared to just 9% in 2003. (http://www.pewglobal.org/files/2013/06/Pew-Global-Attitudes-Homosexuality-Report-FINALJUNE-4-2013.pdf) The growing numbers of the population in support of gay marraige legislation has spurred television producers to include charachters of a homosexual nature in their programmes and broadcasts. Othello

...The relationship between Roderigo and Iago is obviously somewhat close. Iago "hast had [Roderigo's] purse as if the strings were thine"; the metaphor shows how much trust Roderigo has in Iago, and also how he uses Iago as a confidante (I.i.2-3). Does Iago share the same kind of feeling? As far as Roderigo knows, Iago is his friend, but Iago reveals his manipulative nature in this first scene. Iago trusts Roderigo with the knowledge that he serves Othello only to achieve his own goals. It is thus ironic that after Iago's lengthy confession of duplicity, Roderigo still does not suspect anything untoward in his request. Appearance vs. reality is a crucial theme in Iago's story; throughout the play, he enacts a series of roles, from advisor to confidante, and appears to be helping people though he is only acting out of his twisted self-interest. Iago seems to do a great deal of character analysis and exposition for the audience. "These fellows" that flatter for their own purposes "have some soul," Iago says (I.i.54). Contrary to his underhanded self-flattery, Iago seems to have no soul; he never repents, never lets up with his schemes, and never seems to tire of the damage he causes. His statement, "In following [Othello] I follow but myself" emphasizes that he is acting completely out of his own self-interest (I.i.58). Iago will thus hide his motivations and convey only falsehood. If he were to "wear [his] heart upon [his] sleeve", he would be torn apart (I.i.64). Honesty would...
