This is a beautiful poem by Mary Pinkoski, which she calls a “prayer to the earth for [her] sister on her graduation (Pinskoski 98)”. She tries to prompt her sister through this piece, who is suffering from the Down’s syndrome. This poem is definitely inspirational for her sister all the individuals suffering from Down’s syndrome but also to all readers who are unfortunate in any way. This poem is enriched with creative metaphor, powerful word choice other various elements. Nonetheless, this poem is basically comparing the one extra chromosome that causes Down’s syndrome and one extra leaf of four leaf clover.

No doubt, the choice of four leaf clover to encourage her sister is a brilliant choice by the poet. As we know, the four leaf clover is a rare variety of three leaf clover which makes it special. The addition of the fourth leaf is not just bounded by numbers and not simply means an extra leaf. But this fourth leaf bears a special meaning and is used as a symbol in this poem. Every leaf represents something as the first leaf is the symbol of faith, the second is for hope, the third leaf means to love and the fourth extra leaf is for luck. However, this poem is inspirational rather than pathetic. This poem offers various analogies and real examples from nature, which could be easily related with the life of a reader and make the readers motivated. Most of the words in this poem make reader to feel powerful and inspirational in order to conquer all hurdles of life. It is also mentioned that all people have some sort of obstacles in their lives but may be some of them have more than others. However, the more important thing is how we tackle those problems and situations. We should show positive attitude in these tough situations by looking look for the good things and overcome them rather than just lose hope in these circumstances. This poem encourages us to stay positive and courageous despite, having any kind of deformity. Moreover, an individual should always feel special in such situations and consider it as a god’s gift. Nonetheless, this poem does not have very wide scope. The whole poem revolves around the Down’s syndrome. However, the poet uses varies of situations, analogies and metaphors to describe this disorder in a positive way and to encourage her sister.
