As mentioned above, the in-service education was conducted during mandatory monthly ‘lunch and learn’ staff meeting at Maryvale HD outpatient clinic on two consecutive days (03/30/17 and 03/31/2017) at 11:15 am to accommodate both MWF and TTS staff. The main population targeted for the presentation are the interprofessional team of Maryvale HD clinic. The primary stakeholders involved are: FA, CC, PCTs, administrative assistant, nurses, dietitian (RD), social worker (SW), and patients. The clinic’s nurse practitioner (NP) and nephrologist were not present for the meeting. For the successful execution and completion of this project, permission was sought from the CC and FA. Per suggestions from the FA the presentation time was shortened to 15 mins versus the initial 30 mins. On Monday (03/27/17), about an hour was spent to obtain images, props, and models for the powerpoint slides and complete the IC audit among floor staff. The following day (03/28/17), about five hours was invested in creating the powerpoint presentation, printing out copies of the post-test/survey and the ‘5 bubble moment handouts’ obtained from the company’s website (Appendix C). This hand out highlights the five critical moments when one should perform hand washing in a dialysis facility per CDC guidelines. The completed powerpoint slides (Appendiz D) were then emailed to FA and CC to be included into the meeting’s agenda. Both staff meetings on Thursday (03/30/17) and Friday (03/31/17) went off smoothly with no major concerns. About 18 staff members were present. The IC audit on staff was completed on 03/29/17 and observed errors were noted in the presentation slides (Appendix D) for review and discussion during the meeting. The post-test/survey was administered at the end of the presentation to evaluate understanding of information and the benefits gained from the learning. Total of 16 post-test/survey was collected. Two PCTs declined to participate in the test/survey, despite several attempts. The tests were graded and survey analyzed on 04/04/17 (Tuesday) with scores attached as Appendix E. On the survey, ten participants ‘strongly agreed’ and six ‘agreed’ that the overall presentation was informative and beneficial to their learning. The results of the post-test/survey and audit was shared with FA and CC on 04/05/17 (Wednesday). Post discussion, answers and rationale to the frequently missed questions in the post-test is posted in the staff break room bulletin board for individual reading and clarification. Also, noted corrections being made on the treatment floor by staff in keeping with IC audit and policy. Staff were also vigilant to observe the number of patients performing hand hygiene and access care after verbal persuasion.
