One central issue that profoundly impacts multiple communities of color is mass incarceration and hyperpolicing. This issue significantly affects both African American and Latinx/Chicanx communities, creating long-lasting social, economic, and psychological repercussions. African Americans are disproportionately arrested and incarcerated compared to their white counterparts. The War on Drugs, initiated in the 1980s, led to a significant increase in the incarceration rates of African Americans for non-violent drug offenses, even though drug usage rates are similar across racial groups. This results in a cycle of criminalization that disproportionately affects African Latinx/Chicanx communities face both criminalization and the threat of deportation.
