A set of real numbers used in place of a variable (x, y, z, etc…) is called the domain. Real numbers are used in place of variables to assist in the functionality of the equations. This excludes any real number that causes the denominator to be zero. The reason a denominator cannot be zero is because when we divide the denominator with the numerator, you cannot divide by zero. You can’t have a value that is undefined.

The two problems that I was assigned are as follows:

1-x2x 2b-22b2-8

In my first expression, I start by transforming it to a rational expression (1-x) (1+x). Since each set contains terms that are perfect squares, I will factor using the difference of squares formula: a²-b²= (a-b) (a+b). In my problem, a = x and gives me: (-x+1) (x+1). Next, I reorder the polynomial from left to right starting with highest order term which is x = 0 As stated above, the domain of an expression is all real numbers except when the expression is undefined. Type equation here.

(1-x)(1+x)x

I simply the FOIL expression by multiplying and combining like terms giving me:

1-x2x

I divide each term in the numerator and denominator. Then I reduce the term by removing the factor of x giving me the expression:

1x-x

The Domain (D) is the set of all Real Numbers, written in set notation that would look like this:
D = {x| x ∈ ℜ} The final answer is: x≠0 Undefined written in set notation. D={x|x ∈ R, x ≠ 0}

In my second expression, I will start by factoring out the GCF (2) from the numerator and -2 and finally 2 from 2b – 2. This leaves me with:

2 (b-1)2b2-8

Next, I factor the denominator using the GCF (2) from 2b2, -8 and 2b2 – 8. This leaves us with the following expression:

2 (b-1)2 (b+2)(b-2)

Each set contains terms that are perfect squares. I reduce the expression by canceling out all common factors from the numerator and denominator.

b-1(b+2)(b-2)

D = {All Real Numbers} Except for my excluded values of 2 and -2.

There were no excluded values in my first expression because x = 0. My second expression contains the excluded values of 2 and -2. If these were used in place of the variables, the denominator would be zero and the expression would become undefined.

Sex in Th Middle Ages

...Hodges 1 [Amber Hodges graduated from Kalamazoo College in June 2003. She was a senior Sociology/Anthropology major and Psychology minor when she wrote this Observation Report in Spring of 2003]. Observation Report Amber Hodges Introduction Siefert et. al describe children’s play as intrinsically motivated, process oriented, creative and nonliteral, governed by implicit rules, spontaneous and self-initiated, and free from major emotional distress(1997 p. 221-222). For example, the rules of a made-up game that children play cannot be discerned from a rulebook that stands independently of the activity; rather, one can discern rules by either observing or being actively involved in the play process. For children, play is the arena where they ultimately control what is going on, through communication and negotiation with each other, and as such, it is an arena where they are able to gain mastery over problems in their life, learn adult skills and roles, and further develop cognitive abilities (Siefert 1997). But, often times, children do not have complete hold over their environments. They can’t shape what and how they play through their own design. Wardle introduces the concept of an environmental press, “the forces at work in a setting which shape the behavior of people in that setting” (1999 p. 245). One principle of the environmental press is that of progressive conformity, where people’s behavior tends to become congruent with the press of the environment. Accordingly, the...

Effects of Facebook

...Using Facebook as a Medium for Discussions of English Grammar and Writing of Low-Intermediate EFL Students Thanawan Suthiwartnarueput (noiloveshome@gmail.com) Chulalongkorn University, Thailand Punchalee Wasanasomsithi (punchalee.w@chula.ac.th) Chulalongkorn University, Thailand Abstract The present study explored the effects of using Facebook as a medium for grammar and writing discussions of low-intermediate EFL students. The data were collected from the students’ utterances asking for explana-tions about English grammar and writing that were posted on Facebook, their gain scores in the pre-test and post-test, and interview responses. The findings showed a statistically significant difference between the mean scores of the pre-test and the post-test (t = 6.65, p = 0.00). Most common topics of discussion involved sentence structures, followed by word meanings, parts of speech and then relative clauses. It was found that English grammar was worth promoting for discussions on Facebook because there were correlations between the gain scores in the grammar and writing parts at the significant levels (r = 0.399 in the pre-test and r = 0.859 in the post-test). The students also had positive attitudes toward using Facebook as a means of learning grammar and writing. As an alternative learning tool, Facebook provided them a convenient and attractive means to engage in discussions with the teacher and other users who had better grammatical knowledge. 1 Introduction Facebook is a...

During the past two decades, a new trend towards integration and collaboration in supply chains has been recognised among researchers as well as among business practitioners. This philosophy is called supply chain management and has received enormous attention in logistics research. Collaboration based on supply chain management is expected to reduce total cost and improve service towards the supply chain’s end customers at the same time. The argumentation in existing literature is however seldom underpinned by more rigorous empirical material and becomes therefore conceptual and superficial. Furthermore, it is incongruous about what actually is done when companies collaborate and...
