...Math History Essay Math is a subject I enjoy doing. Every day when I come home from school, it is the very first thing I do. Math is by far my favorite subject. It is more exciting than memorizing facts or writing an essay. Math involves thinking and solving, and I like to think through and solve problems. Even though math is not my strongest suit, I still enjoy doing anything related to it. Interest in taking Pre-Cal began during my freshman year. Two years ago, I took Geometry and fell in love with it. I enjoyed everything from proofs to finding the area of a shape. I remember people complaining how difficult Geometry was and thinking the exact opposite. By the end of freshman year, I was sad that Geometry was coming to an end. However, I was informed that Pre-Cal is similar to Geometry and is offered my junior year. Ever since then, I could not wait for Algebra 2 to be over. I also decided to take this class because it will build the foundation needed for Calculus the following year. To be successful in Pre-Cal this year, I will try my best to spare time to review notes I took the day before. I will also spend time with a study group so I can get advice by my peers. Whenever I have unanswered questions and cannot contact a teacher, I can rely on my friends who can explain and guide me along the right answer. As a teacher, you can walk around the class when there is extra time to do homework to easily answer questions that I may have regarding the assignment.......

THURSTON This essay on the nature of proof and progress in mathematics was stimulated by the article of Jaﬀe and Quinn, “Theoretical Mathematics: Toward a cultural synthesis of mathematics and theoretical physics”. Their article raises interesting issues that mathematicians should pay more attention to, but it also perpetuates some widely held beliefs and attitudes that need to be questioned and examined. The article had one paragraph portraying some of my work in a way that diverges from my experience, and it also diverges from the observations of people in the ﬁeld whom I’ve discussed it with as a reality check. After some reﬂection, it seemed to me that what Jaﬀe and Quinn wrote was an example of the phenomenon that people see what they are tuned to see. Their portrayal of my work resulted from projecting the sociology of mathematics onto a one-dimensional scale (speculation versus rigor) that ignores many basic phenomena. ...Fixed and Growth Mind Sets As students growing up, we tend to get fixated on classes we like and dislike. The essay “The Perils and Promises of Praise,” by the author Carol S. Dweck explains that the mind has two different mind-sets. Those are fixed mind-set and growth mind-set, which explains the different ways we think about our intellectual abilities and how well we will do in our classes. A person with a growth mind-set believes that they are able to expand their intellectual ability by putting in effort (Dweck 7). People with this mind-set are willing to work hard and struggle with difficult tasks because in the end they will have completed that task and be successful (Dweck 12). In my first course I have been asked to complete an exercise called the MFL Path Builder. As I worked on this request I found I remembered much more than I thought I would, and forgotten just as much. There are three basic topics that include Writing, Reading, and Math. In high school I was very good at math, but I found I am just a little lacking in memory of all the rules math requires. Whereas I never excelled at English in high school; but was pleasantly surprised when I mastered 3 out of 4 modules in Reading. Oddly enough though in Writing, I completely tanked. After finding out just how much I have remembered and forgotten after so long, I find I am very anxious to get started on all the topic’s contained in each module. I started my IP by setting aside time to myself each night to focus on completing the MFL Path Builders. After completing the path builders for each topic I believe it did just what it should have done. It showed me just what I need to re-learn and catch up on. I feel that this tool was made to help new students that have been out of school for a long time; succeed in their education, and give us the same chances as those students who have just gotten out of other educational programs. ...We all have different ways to deal with grief, longing and loneliness. In this essay I am going to analyze and interpret the short story “No Angel” by Bernie McGill from 2010. It’s a story writ-ten with a very unique spoken language and with an unusual composition, which I will de-scribe even further later in this essay. Additionally, I will make a characterization of the per-sons, get around the use of supernatural elements and in the end explain how I have inter-preted the short story. The story is written in a 1st person narrator, who is Annie – the main character. The spoken language is unique because the story takes place in contemporary Northern Ireland, and the writer has chosen to show the Irish dialect in the spoken language. The language, especially when the father speaks, contains a lot of slang and unusual ways to pronounce the words.
