Nothing had ever seemed more perfect and beautiful to Matti Raspel than the river just a mile from his house. Matti first came across the river when he was taking a bike tour. As he rounded a corner, the rough gravel threw him from his bicycle, sprawling him in front of an obscure path. Like a snake, curiosity coiled around Matti’s body until it had complete dominance over him. He followed the winding path through bushes and vines. Loose dead branches clinged to him, occasionally scratching him until it became almost unbearable. Thorns pricked at him as if he were surrounded by a thousand mosquitoes. On wednesday Matti had to travel farther to get to the river, for he no longer lived in his family’s house. He could hear the river before he got to it. What once was a peaceful stream had turned into a raging river, unable to control itself and crashing along the edges of land, bringing forth debris. The river seemed more alive than ever, and angry at Matti. He did not stay long. He knew, that there was more important things to do than idly sit by and watch some dumb river. On thursday, Matti stood remotely on the rocks, careful to mind his brand new polished shoes, which he didn’t want to ruin. He stood far away from the river, except, the river was no longer there. What replaced it was pure emptiness, it sat there like a muddy trench, useless and dormant. Even if there was river to swim in who didn’t want to partake, that activity was child’s play. Matti left shortly after arriving, he didn’t want to be there any longer. There were more important things to do, like making money, for example. On friday the river was back again, It was brimming with crystal clear water, and the usual birds that chirped their songs had arrived once more to play a final tune for him. The sights and smells overwhelmed him, allowing him to think back to a time where he happily swam in the river. He couldn’t swim anymore however, his old bones simply lacked the
