Homework 14 The play is starts off in Athens but more specifically in the palace of Theseus where Hippolyta the queen of the amazons, Theseus the duke of Athens, and Philostrate master of revels, which is essentially a glorified party planner, enter the room. Theseus proclaims his eagerness to get married while Hippolyta assures him that the wedding will happen soon enough. Then Lysander, Egeus, Hermia, and Demetrius enter the room, Egeus has a dilemma his daughter Hermia is in love with Lysander because he wooed her with many songs and gifts. However Egeus already promised his daughter’s hand in marriage to Demetrius so Egeus has come to Theseus for a favor to get permission to kill his daughter if she does not marry Demetrius. Theseus grants Egeus wish, with one exception instead of death Hermia will have to enter a nunnery, and sets a deadline for Hermia to make her choice the day after the wedding. Then all but Lysander and Hermia leave the room and they both confess their love for each other after this Lysander reveals that he has an aunt that lives far away from Athens. The pair make a plan for the next night to meet in a spot that they have met before so they can set off and get marry each other. Helena reveals that she is in love with Demetrius and wishes that she was or at least was more like Hermia so that Demetrius would notice her. Lysander and Hermia tell Helena their entire plan to run away and elope, however this backfires and Helena decides to tell Demetrius of the couples’ plan in hope that she will gain his
