Maya Lin- Video Review
What was the artist work about? Maya Lin is an architect and designer. Her work is very natural and simplistic, her designs are very simple but the content of her pieces of work are very deep. She is recognized for her landscape art. She expresses her work through objects she makes. This objects or architectural works she has done are all made so people all feel connected in the same way. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington Dc, are two black granite walls which are together linked and have engraved text in chronological order with the names of the men and women who gave up their live for this war. You see that she expresses the amount of sadness and depression in a simple black marble wall that represents much more than that; the color black represents the amount of pain people passed through this years of war and the names written in chronological order make the viewer see all the people that died and see that the person was marked in making the United States a peaceful country. The ideal she wants to express in her work is to make a place for individuals within the landscape that can connect to her artwork. The landscape art Lin makes are sculptures, parks, monuments, and architectural projects in every work of art she express the aspects of nature. In every piece of art is has done she reflects the great amount of interest she has with nature. Lin incorporates aspects of mature in her works because she feels that viewers have to think about the world we live in and the sympathetic existence that we have with nature. For example, the Civil Rights Memorial she made a sculpture of a “water table”. This water table is a flat rounded table and has the movement of water running through out the whole upper layer.

What purpose/reason does the work have for the artist/society? The purpose and reason that Maya Lin wants her work to prove to society and to herself is to address the critical and social issues of our time by giving out the message to stop war, racism and to promote gender equality. She wants to promote this by making everybody connect to the same feeling feel. The reason she makes her artwork like this is to connect people for example in the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, society connects and acknowledge the amount of suffering this war brought to this country. I personally believe she also does this so society understands that we all are equal and can be judged because every human being has feelings. She demonstrated this to society when she won the contest of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. She could have given up and she stand up to what she wanted to do for her coming from an Asian family. She also wants to prove this when she used the movement of water in the Civil Rights Memorial; water equals peace and water is movement meaning it will always move meaning society have to move on. She also proves this by putting a specific Martin Luther King quote and pointing out specific events that happened that happened, you see this while you are getting around the table. I think another purpose her work has is for society to understand that things pass for a cause and that we have to learn to accept what other past societies did and we have to learn from them. Maya Lin purpose is to show the human race throughout her art works that people were there to change history and we have to be grateful.

What do you think of the artist’s work? I think Maya Lin is a very talented artist. I did not no about her artwork, but I find it very interesting the way she develops her art pieces and always uses the essence of nature and always trying to connect people. What I really like about her is for example in this two memorials she develops this architectural structures which are so simple but have a great amount of meaning such as the rounded table, while you go around the table you come to understand why equality is so important and the importance of this movement. For example in the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, there are two black granite walls, but the significance of it is that she wrote in a chronological order the people who died in this war; you as a watcher you get touched and sad because many innocent people were dying because a political decision that was taken place by a series of events done by the government. I enjoyed watching this video, because I was never interested in architectural sculptures and memorials, and at the end of the video I fond it very interesting. She makes these well-developed sculptures that are incredible to notify the amount of detail they have producing a great focal point and balance in each of her pieces. She makes her artwork very satisfying to watch and being a part of it; because you do not see this dramatic impact or something out of the regular you see something regular an object. An object that inspires you peace you can connect to her pieces of art, because just by touching it or looking at it you understand the message of the piece. I also really love the way she uses natural essences to connect with the person and planet earth.

Maya Lin Memorial Analysis

...What I overall admire with Maya Lin’s design is that she made it about the veterans, she wanted it to be about the people and not the politics. The memorial would be about honesty, for people to be able to accept the pain and death, to admit and overcome it. Her design was fairly simple, but for a memorial that her essay described much more then simplicity, it would win the contest. Her design was underground, and on the black surfaces that represented the black surface of the earth (the earth polished) would be carved all the names in chronological order of those Veterans. With Maya Lin’s original idea, she received offensive and hateful comments and criticism. Due to Lin being not only a young woman but an Asian woman some people felt that...

Maya Lin Vietnam Veterans Memorial

...Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Maya Lin, 1982. Maya Lin's "Vietnam Veterans Memorial," is a monument in Washington D.C. honoring those who perished in the Vietnam war. It is comprised of two large black polished slabs of stone, which connect perpendicularly to create a recessed v in the side of the Earthen landscape. The names of the fallen and missing soldiers are etched into the stone. "Vietnam Veterans Memorial" is a groundbreaking composition and a first of its kind, but it is also reminiscent of ancient Chinese art because of the connection made with nature. "Chinese society, basically agricultural, has always laid great stress on understanding the pattern of nature and living in accordance with it" (Silbergeld & Sullivan). The memorial reminds...

How the Visual Arts Communicate

...The Vietnam Veterans Memorial wall was constructed in 1982 in Washington D.C. and designed by Maya lin. This wall honors the service members who died fighting in the Vietnam War. During the 60’s over one third of Americans were against the war. Because of this, there were groups that lead anti-war protests. Many of these people where again the war because of the draft. I have known many people that where drafted during this time. One of those people was my farter who joined the Air Force because his draft number was up and served in the Vietnam War. I can remember walking in a mall with my dad in the mid 70’s and a woman yelling at him calling him a baby killer. I was only eight or nine at the time but I can still see her yelling today. This is why the wall is so very important to Vietnam Veterans. This wall shows that over fifty eight thousand men and women died for their service during this war. This wall is more than just a large piece of art for many people it is a memorial of their loved ones and friends. The Raft of the Medusa is a painting based on an event during the artist Theodore Gericault’s lifetime. The event was a ship call the Medusa stuck a sand bar and had to be abandon. The captain only let wealthy and well-connected people use the lifeboats. This forced the rest of the crew to make a raft out of parts of the ship. The rate at one time held 149 people but only fifteen survived to rescue. Shortly after their rescue five more die. The painting shows a makeshift...

Sharon Kraus Facing It Poem Analysis

...to determine what lies beneath. The speaker, however, reckons that the white veteran is “damaged” which leaves the room for empathy. He experienced Vietnam first hand, so he has an idea on how the man is feeling, but he isn’t certain. They “shared history.” Also, another example would be when the speaker “misperceives” the action of a woman “brushing a boy’s hair,” for her attempting to “erase names.” He took these actions as “a gesture of grieving.” This small action also, in a deeper sense, represents the future. This one boy represents “the next generation,” in which he will more than likely be “cared for rather than damaged” (118). As you can see, this poem really delves into such important topics that can be represented with Maya Lin’s monument. If there is something to take away from Komunyakaa's poem and Kraus’ essay, which there most certainly is, it would be the generic “don’t judge a book by it’s cover,” and to always search for the deeper meaning in things. ...

The Cultural Revolution

...Revolution all about? Why did Mao launch the Cultural Revolution? The Cultural Revolution could be regarded as a nightmare for the generation of my grandparents’ age. It was initiated by Mao Zedong and utilized by the counterrevolutionary clique that led by Lin Biao and Jiang Qing. This leading mistake was an unchangeable disaster to the whole state, the CCP, and all the Chinese people. This struggle lasted for ten years from 1966 to 1976. How could Chinese people endure this ordeal for ten year? We should understand the concept of the Cultural Revolution first according to the required readings. From 1966 to 1969, Mao wanted to change “the bourgeois dictatorship” to “the proletarian dictatorship,” which meant that Mao needed people to destroy the so-called “the capitalists.” The real meaning of the Cultural Revolution for Mao himself was to help the CCP to seize power from the KMP. For him, that meant to snatch the regime from the bourgeois leaders and gave it back to the proletarians. In 1966, the “Sixteen Articles” announced that the party should adjust those in power but took the path of “capitalism ”. The events about seizing power started from January 1967 in Shanghai. And one month later, Lin Biao and Jiang Qing led the counterrevolutionary people frame those older generations of proletarian revolutionaries up to say that the elders were disturbing the CCP by complaining their concerns about the Cultural Revolution. This movement was called the “February...

The Anti-Drug Campaign and the First Opium War

...The Anti-Drug Campaign and the First Opium War In 1930, Chinese officials began to have growing concerns about the increasing trade of opium with the British. China’s social and economic status started to decline due to the opium trade agreement. Chinese addiction to opium became overwhelming and eventually forced China to launch Lin Zexu’s Anti-Drug Campaign in 1839. As a result, this campaign was viewed as a violation of the trade agreement with Britain and helped led to the First Opium War. China isolated themselves from the western world, believing they didn’t need anything from foreign trade. For eight decades, the only port that China opened was called the Canton System. The problem was China only wanted silver in exchange for their exports to Europe. Unfortunately, Europe only traded in gold and silver was hard to come by. Desperate to resolve the foreign trade, Britain realized they can acquire such a commodity in opium from India to exchange for exports in China. The trade of India’s opium started as a medical drug in the early 1800’s between China and Britain. Eventually, it triggered massive dependences throughout China’s society that affected the rich and poor equally. Before long, the demand for the drug was overwhelming, resulting in China importing more opium than exporting trades. Thus, resulting in an imbalanced foreign trade and stability of China’s society. A decree issued in 1810 from the Chinese Emperor stating, “Opium is a poison, undermining our good...

Changes in climate, however, are now regarded as the main relevance to the collapse of civilizations with the improvement of technology of climate detection. Civilizations that were used to be extremely prosperous in the past have now been collapsed due to the changes in climate, in which the Angkor (“Climate,” 2010), the capital of ancient Khmer empire in Cambodia now, and Maya (Werner, 2006) are included. According to “Climate”, the civilization of Angkor was splendid and presiding as they enjoyed the unprecedented water system, where there were colossus water tanks and canals, and connecting waterways. Pigs in Jerseys

...Jacob Smith October 14th, 2013 English 111.140 Pigs in Jerseys? The two essays “The Roar of the Crowd” by David P. Barash and “Champion of the World” by Maya Angelou are vastly different in their opinion of the importance of sports, and the how that it effects the world around us. Barash’s Main argument is that we have completely engulfed ourselves into these sports, played between a bunch of “spoiled millionaire players” (Barash 362). While forgetting things that...

Maya Angelou

...Maya Angelou's Early Life Maya Angelou was born Marguerite Annie Johnson in St. Louis, Missouri in 1928. Maya and her brother, Bailey, moved to live with their grandmother after the divorce of their parents. The move to Stamps, Arkansas forced Maya to encounter much racism. Despite prevalent racism in town, Maya's grandmother always made sure to teach Maya and her brother strong values. At the age of eight, Maya's mother, Vivian, took the children back to live with her in St. Louis. Shortly after the move, Maya was raped by her mother's live-in boyfriend. This traumatic event caused Maya to become mute for a period of time afterward and withdraw from family and friends. It also created a major rift between Maya and Vivian. At thirteen, Maya moved to San Francisco where she attended George Washington High School and received a scholarship to the California Labor School for dance and drama classes. Maya was one of the only black students in her school and found life in San Francisco intriguing and liberating. Maya's Young Adult Life She became pregnant with her son, Clyde, at age seventeen. Compare and Contrast

...of comparing two different essays, I read through the list before deciding on Sister Flowers by Maya Angelou and I Want a Wife by Judy Brady. I found both essays to be well-written and each touched me on an emotional level. However, I found the essay Sister Flowers to be the better essay because of the descriptive nature and that it has a deeper meaning by showing how the kindness of one person can make one feel liked and respected, while the essay I Want a Wife was written more for entertainment by showing how little men do and how much women take care of. The essay Sister Flowers is about a little girl named Marguerite who, in the beginning of the essay, compared herself to “an old biscuit, dirty and inedible” (Angelou, M.) until she met Mrs. Bertha Flowers. Marguerite looked up to Mrs. Flowers whom she referred to as graceful, and one of the few gentlewomen she had known. Marguerite states “She was our side’s answer to the richest white woman in town” (Angelou, M.). Marguerite’s reverence of Mrs. Flowers made her ashamed of how uneducated her grandmother appeared. One day Mrs. Flowers invited Marguerite into her house so she could have a talk with her. The fact that she cared enough to invite Marguerite into her house, make cookies for her, and then give her a book to read made Marguerite feel liked and respected. This kindness had a profound affect on Marguerite. The detail Maya Angelou went into in this essay made me feel like I was there watching it all happen. The essay...
