CARDIOLOGY-GRADE STETHOSCOPE: ~$ 140-160

Get at least a cardiology-grade stethoscope: has a diaphragm, bell, and dual lumen. Plan to spend at least $140. Examples:
1. Littman: Cardiology III: pediatric side can be a bell or can adjust pressure on diaphragm ~$140160, Master Cardiology ~$185 (is single sided and NOT necessary)
2. Heine: Gamma C3 Cardiology ~$140
3. Welch Allyn: Tycos Elite ~$140
4. MDF: Procardial C3 ~$162
 Your stethoscope will be used to hear heart murmurs, lung sounds, bruits--- things not always so easy to hear. You will not be working in sound proof environments. DO NOT skimp in this area or you’ll just buy another one because you can’t hear anything.
 Chest piece can be two sided: bell (low pitch) and diaphragm (high pitch) or single sided. We suggest for ease of use that you purchase a scope with a two-sided chest piece
 Should have replaceable, multi-size ear tips, esp if you have small ear canals!
 Multiple tube colors and different chest piece finishes available; get whatever color you desire. Get a name tag piece to identify yours or you can get it engraved.

SPHYGMOMANOMETER (Blood Pressure cuff) $20-200

Prices vary according to calibration warranty, valves, and cuffs. Can lose calibration when knocked around.

1. POCKET SPHYGS $20 @ CVS or up to $115

Generally, the least expensive and most popular. Pocket designs are the most compact and portable. This is what is in most offices.

2. PALM SPHYGS $95-200

Most commonly used with multi-cuffs (Pedi, Adult, XL).

The bulb and valve are integrated into the gauge for one-hand convenience.

Palm sphygs are easier to use, but we use pocket sphygs in the “real world.”

DIAGNOSTIC SCOPE HANDLE AND ATTACHMENTS ~$428-705

Prices vary according to the type of battery handle you choose and the type of scope heads. 

All items are traditionally bundled together in a basic kit with a case that includes the handle, an otoscope head (to look in ears) and an ophthalmoscope head (to look in eyes.)

Less expensive if bundled in a kit ~$428- $705, or else sold separately.

If you purchase from Heine or Welch Allyn via UNTHSC, they will provide a broad warranty— READ CAREFULLY.

** We have had 2 years of trouble with bulbs from Welch Allyn– caused nondimming. They remedied the problem immediately. CHARGE and TEST YOUR
EQUIPMENT THE MOMENT YOU GET IT!!

DO NOT buy the cheap portable/ mini kits- you can’t see with them– and we don’t allow them. If you can’t see, you can’t learn. The ONLY pocket/ mini kits we allow are those sold by Heine ~ $430. BUT Heine pocket kit ophthalmoscope lights are very bright and cannot be dimmed, which may limit a good funduscopic (eye) exam.

Use caution when buying used from someone or buying online: www. Steeles.com, Amazon, Craig’s list, ebay, UNT treasure chest: It’s not always clear what you’re getting and no manufacturer’s warranty on this expensive item is risky.

A. HANDLES
1. Lithium Ion Battery Handle $250

Has a longer battery life, fully rechargeable in wall. (This item is not necessary or worth the extra $$$.)

2. Ni-Cd Battery Handle ~ $120

Can replace battery— even after 10 years of non use (about $26.)

Fully rechargeable in wall. Also, you can buy adapter and use 2 D batteries.

B. DIRECT OPHTHALMOSCOPE HEADS
1. Coaxial Ophthalmoscope Head ~$190

Feels and looks like any other ophthalmoscope used in almost all clinics; learning on this will prepare you for wherever you go. This is what you will use in OSCEs.

Has basics that any student would want and will allow for adequate visualization of the retina

2. PanOptic Ophthalmoscope Head ~$600

You are NOT allowed to use these on OSCEs, so why spend the extra $$$?

Regardless of your PanOptic purchase, you still need to know how to use a coaxial head (above) in
OSCEs and in “the real world” and if you learned on a Welch Allyn PanOptic, you have no technical ability to use a standard ophthalmoscope.

Fits on any standard Welch Allyn 3.5 V power handle.

5x greater view of the back of the eye (retina), and 26% increased magnification.

Holding this to a patient’s eye produces results PROVIDED YOU KNOW HOW TO USE IT.

You can buy an adapter to hook up iPhone and take pictures.

C. OTOSCOPE HEADS
1. Standard Otoscope Head ~$110

Most likely to come these across in clinics and hospitals, but no longer sold in kits via Welch
Allyn—has been replaced by the Macroview.

Welch Allyn uses standard otoscope tips.

Heine otoscopes require their own otoscope tips, which Heine will send you free
ONLY while you’re in school.

You can slide the lens for curette access and can attach a insufflator bulb (accessory used to push air into the ear and gauge movement of the tympanic membrane.)

2. Macroview Otoscope Head ~ $200

Doubles field of view and can increase magnification by 30% .

Requires its own specific otoscope tips (NOT the same ones above).

Can fog up easy; use anti-fog lens wipes

You cannot slide the lens aside for direct access to the ear with a curette.

There is no difference in the physical use of any of the above otoscope heads.

Final points: Remember; this equipment lasts years; think of the future when you purchase.
1.

This course requires that men wear shorts and women wear shorts and tank tops while in lab as you will examine each other. If you are especially modest, buy an exam gown and wear it in lab. (Approximately $9-25 from amazon)

2.

Top of the line items (PanOptic, Macroview) are typically NOT used in standard practice. You don’t know where you are going to work just yet and you may want to wait before you spend the big bucks. Remember, you are NOT allowed to use a PanOptic head during testing
(OSCEs).

3.

You can purchase online to save money on sites such as www.steeles.com or even Amazon. Some students have used Craig’s list or Ebay.
Downside: you don’t always know what you’re getting and they may not provide the same manufacturer warranties. Proceed with caution.

4.

“Exotic” tube colors on stethoscopes may look unprofessional in certain environments.

5.

CHARGE and TEST ALL YOUR EQUIPMENT THE MOMENT YOU GET IT! READ THE MANUALS AND WARRANTIES! To save yourself from embarrassment, please read all materials carefully and charge your equipment before you come to class/ OSCEs and/ or before you say a piece of equipment doesn't work properly. 

6.

We have plenty of disposable otoscope tips (both Welch Allyn and Heine) that we will supply you with while you are in PE Skills, so you don’t need to buy them.

Study Questions Hamlet

...Act 3 Scene 1 Study Questions 1. What does Claudius say about his conscience? Claudius admits to killing the old king of Denmark and starts to realise how much of a burden it is, Saying his conscience is like cosmetic camouflage. He also claims that the guilt he is carrying is a heavy burden, and may be starting to feel regret for committing the action. Provide an explication of Hamlet’s famous “To be, or not to be” speech. 2. Hamlet’s “To be or not to be” speech is basically Hamlet wondering what the easiest way out is, or if he should do the right thing. He wonders about either killing himself, or whether or not it is better to stand up and face the conflict he faces. He quotes “Whether ‘tis nobler in the mind to suffer/ The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,/ Or to take arms against a sea of troubles/ And by opposing end them….To die, to sleep;/ To sleep, perchance to dream—ay, there’s the rub:/ For in that sleep of death what dreams may come,/ when we have shuffled off this mortal coil,/” It angers him, and he continues to rant about other things like his mother and uncle’s marriage, and goes off on Ophelia. 3. Hamlet treats ophellia very poorly in Scene 1 because she returns all of the gifts he gave her, saying that they don’t mean anything when the person that gave them to her has changed. He then proceeds to tell Ophelia that He never loved her, and that she should go to a nunnery to protect herself/chastity because like her father, her family...

Maybe Its Maybelline and Almay

...Make up, distributed by many different companies with a lot of brands, is advertised an extreme amount of times in different areas like a store's wall, magazine ads, and the most popular television commercials. Drugstore make up seems to be the most advertised on television, and the two most advertised make up brand is Maybelline New York and Almay. Both of which are very popular and favorite brands of consumers, come up with so many different types of products for each feature of the women's face. Both brands also come up with really good and distinct commercials to promote their products, and though each distribution is a competitor, they are equally popular and sell. While Almay successfully advertises their products by using descriptive words, a simple background, and a tranquil, mood; Maybelline also successfully promotes their products by using different objects to symbolize their description, creating such edgy and fierce scenery for the set of the commercials. Currently, all of the commercials for Almay have the same actress to promote the makeup which is Kate Hudson. She is the voice behind the commercial and uses descriptive words to portray the makeup, which not only draws the consumer’s attention to give into the makeup, but also makes the product sound that it is a promising good quality. A cover up made to appeal to the beauties who don’t get enough beauty sleep, is advertised with its name, Almay Wake-up Make-Up. Hudson describes this cover up to have “hydrating...

Review of Maybe Tomorrow

...The book ‘’Maybe Tomorrow’’ tells the story of Boori Monty Pryor. It describes the career path and life story of an Aboriginal in Australia. From being a model to eventually becoming a writer or like it is called in the aboriginal cultural, a storyteller. The book is not a typical biography, because it has been written as a one-way conversation between Boori and the reader. Personally I find this somewhat confusing; jumping from one topic to the other does not feel comfortable to read. What it definitely does deliver on is giving a better understanding about the aboriginal culture, the difficulties they face from white Australians in this country and how every person in this culture needs to adapt to the way of the ‘white men’. There are many consequences to this manifestation. For example, the fact that alcoholism and suicide is a common factor in the aboriginal culture. It is very sad that several aboriginals try to cope with the struggles they face by consuming excessive alcohol or taking their own life. This transpires very much so in Boori’s life. Three of his siblings committed suicide and alcoholism was around him when growing up. It is very unfortunate that the book does not describe the personal story of his siblings. It would have giving the book a different aspect of why his siblings would decide to take their own life. Boori gives a good description what the most likely reason was but only his siblings truly know. Nobody will ever know what their personal experiences...

There was a presence of racism all throughout the book which unfortunately would have been present during this era. During the time that the group was traveling they all were told to go back to their masters. They were also tormented by the early version of the Ku Klux Klan and were eventually forced to move from the land that they were cultivating. Faith and Tradition: Maybe We Should Stop Believing and Start New Customs

...Faith and Tradition: Maybe We Should Stop Believing and Start New Customs In America, many believe that our country’s values, morals and roots are in organized religion, specifically Christianity. Many, in fact, would go so far as to say that a lack of “God” in our country will be our downfall, as we continue to move farther and farther away a single religious influence. What if moving more towards tolerance and the value in individual beliefs and values would make a country of stronger people? What if religious influence would, actually, be the root of our downfall? “A Prophet’s Hair”, “A Father” and “Funeral at the Traffic Lights”, suggest that it is foolish to force faith, tradition and religion and it is either harmful or insignificant to the outcome of a situation. Religion tends to, ironically, create a false sense of security or power, and alienation. The story of “A Prophet’s Hair” revolves around a money lender who breaks his son’s legs so that they can get more money begging. In the midst of a transaction, the money lender has a prophet’s hair in his possession for a few hours and because of it he decides he needs to be religious and begins to spew hateful truths at his family. He starts to take vicious control of his loved-ones and feels as though he has a greater sense of authority. “Hashim began to gush, to spume long streams of awful truths. Waterfall vs. Rad: How to Pick the Right Method for Your Project You'Ve Heard a Lot About Each of These Development Methods, and Maybe You Prefer One over the Other. but How Do You Choose the Best Method for a

...Waterfall vs. RAD: Comments 0 Facebook 2 Linkedin Twitter More The waterfall and rapid application development (RAD) processes are not the only two methodologies available, but they generally predominate among methods used to deliver projects. Each has its individual merits, but sometimes one method is more appropriate for a particular project than the other. In this column, I will look at when to select each of these approaches. As I mentioned in prior columns, I believe most, if not all projects, can be delivered with the waterfall methodology: plan, analyze, design, construct, and implement. In contrast, not all projects are candidates for RAD. Perhaps the best starting point is to take a look at some project characteristics that govern which method is best. Details on waterfall and RAD methodologies To find out more about the methodologies, read these articles: •"Examining the life cycle of a RAD project" •"How does the waterfall development methodology play in the enterprise?" How big is the project? One of the basic tenets of RAD is focusing on smaller projects that can be launched quickly and concluded with tangible deliveries. However, not all projects can be broken down into smaller pieces because they are too complex and interrelated to be split up effectively. There is no rule of thumb to determine how small a project needs to be before it is a candidate...
