I learned the most about economics and financial planning, not while in college or at work, but during my time off from the working world during the years I got married and started a family. After working for three and a half years in the financial services industry I had been exposed to the business side of financial advising; I learned about stock portfolios, retirement funds and the importance of a diversified portfolio, and though I was passionate about the industry I never fully understood the level of freedom and empowerment that one attains from financial security. I was a naive 20-something when I got married and thought my husband could be responsible for our financial future. I grew up in a relatively “traditional” family where my dad managed the finances and my mom took care of the home. And even though I had graduated from a prestigious college program in Political Science and expected to maintain a career I still had very little understanding of the importance of being a financially independent woman in today’s world. Throughout the years I have learned that there are many other women in my same situation that would benefit from financial counseling and education. Though I had an understanding of the financial industry, the fact is that prior to starting a family I had never been responsible for basic home economics such as balancing a checkbook, paying bills, or starting a college fund for my daughter. It became apparent to me how important it was for me to become involved in all of the household financial decisions and encouraged me to take charge. I figured that even if I could not be part of the working world, I could still contribute financially to my family and later learned I could help others in my community as well. Within a year, I had convinced my husband to open a joint account, something that is incredibly important for military families, and overall I was able to reduce our debt by 90 percent, increase our savings, open Individual Retirement Accounts (IRA), and set up a college fund for my daughter. After some time my husband also realized the benefit of planning for our family’s financial future and he is now on the bandwagon. Even though I was not working outside of the home, it was during this time that I learned about my professional interest and strengths in the business world. I fine tuned my managerial skills such as time management, conflict resolution, and customer service skills. I also had the benefit of joining a local mother’s organization where other military families were also members. As a member of this group I put my business skills to work and took on the role as the group’s publicity coordinator. In this position I work with enrolling members and marketing our organization to the local community. It is through membership dues that our club is able to function and sponsor a variety of events throughout the year. In addition to increasing membership I have also taken an active role in managing the organization’s yearly budget. In this position I have learned about the countless other women and families that would benefit from financial education and it is my intention, through more formal education, to pursue a career in financial counseling. I believe that pursuing my MBA degree will allow me to hone my personal interests in business and finance and provide a strong framework to pursue a career in this field.

...MBA Admissions Essay Powerful Tips for Improving Your Odds of Gaining Admission to the MBA Program of Your Choice Admissions essays are easily the most challenging part of the MBA application process, and it’s no wonder. Step one: Relax. Writing admissions essays is stressful—it’s supposed to be stressful— but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Everyone who has ever applied to business school has written admissions essays, and so can you. All you have to do is submit essays that are a little bit better than most of the others, and if you follow the advice we’ll cover in the following pages, it will be a lot less painful. How to Write a Successful Most MBA essays are mediocre The good news is that most MBA admissions essays are mediocre at best. If you can at least come up with a marginally compelling narrative, and if you can spell and punctuate everything correctly—or know someone who can—you’ll automatically have an advantage over much of the competition. Essays may be typed in the document below, saved and uploaded in one document when requested during the online application. Responses to each essay question should be no more than two pages using 1.5 line spacing. Please begin each question on a new page. Essay Question #1 Explain how your past accomplishments have prepared you for the W. P. Carey MBA. “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get.” A famous saying from the movie Forrest Gump pretty much describes my situation. In my earlier life, I never thought I would come to US for my master of engineering, work as an electrical engineer at Force10networks (it was acquired by DELL recently), and now pursue an MBA. My past accomplishments that have prepared me for the W.P. Carey MBA include teaching mathematics in Taiwan, coming to US to improve myself, earning my engineering masters at the University of Arizona, and working as electrical design engineer at force10networks. Before I came to US, I had taught mathematics from high school level to college calculus for seven years. The reason that I like teaching is I like to sense students’ issues of learning mathematics. I like to communicate with them, and to help them succeed in......

Developing Your Brand

...For a moment, consider who the audience is for your MBA application.  You will be spending countless hours writing a magnum opus that may be read by only one individual—or a select few at most. These people have many applications that they need to go through every day, and even the most meticulous individuals may at times miss some parts of your essays. That’s why you need to make things as clear and easy to read as possible for the admissions committee team by making sure that they can’t miss who you are and what you can bring to an incoming MBA class. The best business school applications feature four or five aspects of the candidate’s character and experiences that anyone reading the essays will identify. These traits blend to create “Brand You.” We all understand the power and influence that brands have. Businesses spend a lot of money to make sure you know how they bring value and what they stand for. While there are many more subtle parts to their full corporate identities and many tones to their product/service offerings, companies need to ensure that purchasers have a complete understanding of a limited set of characteristics. As an example, this is list of traits for a few reputable companies: 1. Low prices every day of the week, large selection, one-stop store 2. Fun place to be, socially responsible, respect for employees 3. Creative design, simple, cool 4. Cheeky, young, influencing lifestyles 5. Fun, family, fantasy Even from only......

...www.platinumgmat.com | Free GMAT Prep GMAT Practice Questions | GMAT Study Guide | MBA Admissions GMAT AWA Sample Essay Analysis of An Argument "The recent surge in violence in the southern part of the city is a result of a shortage of police officers and an absence of leadership on the part of the city council. In order to rectify the burgeoning growth of crime that threatens the community, the city council must address this issue seriously. Instead of spending time on peripheral issues such as education quality, community vitality, and job opportunity, the city council must realize that the crime issue is serious and double the police force, even if this action requires budget cuts from other city programs." In the argument above, the author concludes that the city council is not doing its job well and needs to focus on expanding significantly the police force in order to combat recent growth in the level of crime. The premise of the argument is that crime is expanding while the city council focuses on ostensibly unrelated matters such as education reform. However, the argument is flawed because it falsely assumes that the city council’s efforts to improve quality of life are entirely unrelated to levels of violence and it assumes that the crime problem can be solved by merely increasing the police force. First, the argument wrongly assumes that issues of educational opportunity, community vitality, and job availability have no bearing on crime. However, the author......

NYU Stern Case Study

...every international student should know about NYU Stern The New York University Stern School of Business was founded in 1900 by Charles Waldo Haskins, co-founder of Deloitte’s predecessor Haskins and Sells and a nephew of Ralph Waldo Emerson. It was then known as the School for Commerce, Finance, and Accounting, and prepared students for careers in the financial markets of New York City. In 1988, following a $30 million gift from alumnus Leonard N. Stern (MBA 1959), the school improved its facilities, and was renamed the Leonard N. Stern School of Business. Ten years later, in 1998, a $10 million gift from Henry Kaufman (PhD 1958) supported a major upgrade of Stern’s facilities. In 1999 came a similar gift from Kenneth Langone (MBA 1960). In 2000, Stern celebrated its centenary with the launch of a $100 million Centennial Campaign, which helped the school double its endowment, enhance the number of named professorships, and increase financial aid to students. Here are more facts about the school, with a focus on its full-time MBA program. Location: NYU Stern is located in the center of Greenwich Village, near Washington Square Park...

The first four applicants all applied to the University of Chicago. They were chosen by Chicago’s admissions director, Don Martin, according to my desire that they be from four very different people and of average quality for those admitted.
