Two weeks after graduating high school, I arrived at Shocco Springs Baptist Conference Center to begin my first “real job” and experience the most pivotal summer of my life. While most of my friends frolicked on beaches enjoying their last summer before college, my ten hour workdays as a “Summer Staffer” consisted of scrubbing floors, cleaning toilets, preparing meals, cleaning dishes, hauling trash, and busing tables. While these duties yielded an education in how to survive a gritty physical environment, the most vital education I received was in how to survive a gritty social environment. My boss was fired for stealing, a direct co-worker was arrested for murder, and another co-worker stalked me. Various fellow staff members allowed these unexpected circumstances to distract them from their daily responsibilities, but I understood that Shocco guests still demanded our services. Rather than retreat from a back-breaking job amidst criminals, I daily maintained a laser-like focus on getting my job done despite feeling intimidated. Overcoming the intimidation brought forth two lessons that changed my life forever: life will always throw you curve balls and you must adapt to them, and secondly, there is no substitute for hard work. These lessons prepared me for the real world and greatly motivated me to obtain a higher education.

Upon graduating from the University of Alabama, I had a unique professional and personal opportunity to move to San Diego. Professionally, I became one of the youngest Assistant Managers at a national retail chain. On a personal level, I did not know anyone in the city and had the opportunity to build a new life. After being on the job for one week, the only other manager resigned and I was instantly responsible for every duty in managing the store: selling, hiring, firing, and inventory management. I worked twelve-hour shifts at least three times per week. Again, adjusting to curve balls and working hard gained the attention of my boss and I was rewarded with several pay increases. However, the real reward was the thrill of managing. I was falling in love with making a positive difference in my employees and customers while steering a company toward profitability. I knew I wanted my own company one day.

After two years in San Diego, I returned to my roots in Birmingham and, along with my job as a Replenishment Analyst at Hibbett Sports, began volunteering at Sav-a-Life, a pro-life non-profit organization which provides counseling to pregnant women contemplating abortion. The Elliot Institute states that within the first few weeks after having an abortion between forty percent and sixty percent of women experience negative reactions. Within eight weeks after their abortions, fifty-five percent expressed guilt, forty-four percent complained of nervous disorders, thirty-six percent had experienced sleep disturbances, thirty-one percent had regrets about their decision, and eleven percent had been prescribed psychotropic medicine by their family doctor. These are just a few of the effects that the pregnant woman, herself, experiences, yet these conditions negatively affect virtually every person in the woman’s life. The aftermath effects are drastic and systemic. Therefore, there is an enormous demand for volunteers who have a passion for providing these women with not only a framework for making decisions, but a structure on how to live their lives after their decisions. The name of the organization is Sav-a-Life, which technically refers to the baby, but after I have counseled dozens and dozens of vulnerable clients, I understand that the other life that is “saved” is the pregnant woman. On a macro-level, my efforts at Sav-a-Life are not just an investment in the baby and the mother, but in American society as a whole.

Many of my skills have been developed and confirmed in my four years at Sav-a-Life . My passion for helping those in need has been galvanized with each client tear that is shed in my office. With each confrontational, verbal exchange, I have seen that there is no substitute for solid leadership and thinking on one’s feet. Additionally, I have learned to confidently, yet respectfully, articulate my beliefs when the person on the other side of the table holds a different opinion and the stakes are high. As a result, I have seen lives changed for the better. Good leadership requires boldness, confidence, and determination for improvement. Sav-a-Life has been a huge contributing factor in helping me acquire these qualities.

My involvement with the aforementioned organizations helped me realize that I could impact the lives of others while doing what I love. My goal is to operate a retail business that in turn gives back to people in need. New York Times and Wall Street Journal best selling financial author, Dave Ramsey said, “Don’t view your business as a way to make money, but view it as a way to serve.” This clearly defines my motive behind running a business, but how will I make a dream into a reality? Seventy-eight million American babies were born during the Baby Boomer Generation, which represents approximately twenty-eight percent of the American population today. Nine million Baby Boomers are small business owners. The Exit Planning Institute estimates that five million Baby Boomers have no succession plan. Over the next twelve to fifteen years, more than eight million small businesses will be sold. It is imperative that young business professionals, like myself, take full advantage of this opportunity. I must take the next step in preparing to acquire a business. Education is a valuable commodity that can never be taken away once it is obtained. Harold Morris, award winning New York Times best-selling author and close friend of mine, quoted in his book Law of the Harvest, “Preparation should always come before performance.” Furthering my education is a key factor in this preparation process. I am fully aware that most start up businesses fail within the first year. My goal is to prepare as much as possible in order to avoid becoming one of those statistics.

The personal and professional experiences I have achieved provide me with a competitive edge rendering a mutual benefit for the MBA program and for me. My experience in various retail environments has enhanced my capacity to work well with all types of people in a productive manner. Proper people skills are fundamental in such a learning atmosphere. I am comfortable working in diverse groups providing a successful outcome. Having six years of post undergraduate work experience, I possess the ability to share feedback on real world work and life experiences that will contribute to the dynamic learning environment in the classroom.

These experiences have heavily contributed to my desire of earning an MBA from The Brock School of Business. Maximizing my understanding on successfully running a business is essential, and The Brock School of Business provides the financial knowledge and entrepreneurial skills that are vital to most effectively and efficiently achieve this purpose. I find the program’s emphasis on case studies and group work to be congruent with my intention to learn the reality of operating a business. Acquiring authentic perspectives from real business leaders in real situations, and studying their successes and failures is the ideal learning environment for me. Furthermore, an MBA from The Brock School of Business is essential because my future is here in Birmingham and therefore the networking opportunities are attractive. Also, the classes offered abroad will be beneficial to enhancing my understanding of the business world. Submersion in different cultures is a fundamental piece of the puzzle for entrepreneurs in order to have a diverse background. Cultivating my existing entrepreneurial skills at The Brock School of Business will allow me to make a considerable contribution not only to Birmingham, but also to society.

...George Washington Narrative Essays Describe your “perfect” post-M.B.A. job. (Limit to one page, 250 words.) The most practical career path for me would be to take my extensive experience in sustainable design and “green” engineering and use my MBA to transition into management and business development in the same field. However, my “perfect” post-MBA job would be to run a nonprofit organization that would focus on the education of children and teenagers. I would do this because I have truly enjoyed the satisfaction of making a difference in someone’s life. My own experience has shown me that there is a serious shortage of role models for young people and the first place that this shows is at school. I believe that if young people are not accountable for their actions, it is unlikely that they will strive for greatness. My main effort, along with inspiration, would be to work with their parents. I would make my best effort to hold parents accountable for their children’s education and I would provide them with the necessary tools and materials for their child to be successful. The George Washington MBA Program will give me the knowledge and tools to effectively manage the organization that I have described. I will strive to learn the best way to market this organization to attract donors, volunteers, and employees so that I can achieve this dream. I plan on devoting much of my life to donating my time and money to others and I would love the challenge of running...

Personal Narrative: Personal Underwater Habitat

...The P.U.H. stands for Personal Underwater Habitat. With my bag of baitfish and my gigantic prize, I swam up to the entrance. This entrance was unlike any other entrance to a home. This entrance was at the bottom of a building attached to seafloor by chains. The P.U.H. was shaped like a half globe with small portholes along the midsection. To an outsider, it looked like I was living in a flying saucer. As I poked my head through I pulled down the cable from the pulley attached to the ceiling. I ran this cable through the dead brown groupers mouth and out through the gills. I quickly threw the bag full of tiny fish onto the habitat’s deck and started to pull the fish up. With the fish finally out of the water, I took my face mask off and unhooked my regulator from the oxygen tank. Slowly, I brought the oxygen tank to the refilling...

Personal Narrative: A Single Moment

...possible. However, the second I saw Nova’s dirty blonde hair make its entrance into this world I knew my thinking was flawed. All the trees in town were barren, their leaves long since made their ways to obscenely large black trash bags and compost piles. November had just said goodbye, while me and my wife we’re anxiously awaiting our chance to say hello to our first-born daughter for the first time. Having been carrying the burden of two for every bit of two hundred and eighty days, my wife was exhausted. We spent hours on every mommy blog we could find -- filtering through all the myths on how to naturally induce labor in hopes of finding something that actually worked. We tried them all; Spicy foods and certain teas, but, as one would expect, none of them worked. That is until we read about how walking could help encourage labor. While it might have been coincidence, during a short walk around the block my wife’s contractions started screaming it was time....

Advantage and Disadvantage of Entrance Exams to

...Advantage and disadvantage of entrance exams to universities in China and US As we all know, students who want to go to college must take exams which are called “entrance exams to Universities”. College entrance exams are considered to be the unique approach that the students are admitted by the colleges, and a significant factor that determines a student’s future development. They’re even regarded as one of the turning points in their lives. The similarity of the college entrance exams in China and that in the Western countries is that they are both the ways of selecting students for the colleges. Well, it's a must door for all the Chinese senior students to the higher education. It may be considered to be too exam-oriented, or too narrow and strict to the students, however it has last for decades. It is actually useful in choosing talented people. To take an even spectacular example, in order to get a good result, students must be hard working, considerable, insistent and knowledgeable, and these, are just what the society needs. In total, everything exists has a reason. I think the exam is workable in some way, but can still be improved. In China, more than half students take exams on June 17th and 18th, in China. In that day, many students march in the classroom to wait for the examinations. Whatever the weather is hot, they full of confidence and stress to write down their answers. Even though they are ill and cannot give up the test, for they cannot live up to...

...Parenting in Today’s China: Concerns, Anxiety, and Commitment* Dr. Gan Wang, Associate Senior Research, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Beijing Since the late 1990s, there has been a proliferation of parenting discussion forums (BBS) on the Internet in China. On the BBS, many young parents with higher education keep records of their children’s development, socialize with other parents, first in the virtual space, then in real space., communicate knowledge of childrearing and ECE, and discuss and debate over many issues in early childhood. In an earlier paper of mine, I claim that the Internet provides a new kind of social space in which the young mothers assert their new identity. Today, I’ll concentrate on one special debate issue. Examining the debate, I propose that to better understand challenges and concerns facing Chinese parents, a cultural historical approach should be adopted. Viewing parenting BBS, you often see great concerns and anxieties over the issue whether young children should “learn things”. To study or not to study, that is the question. There are some stories on the internet by ambitious parents who teach their children to recite dozens of Chinese classic poems at the age of 2, to recognize over a thousand Chinese characters and start to read at the age of 3, and play piano at the age of 4. Some of these parents keep record of their children’s progress in these studies and post on the Internet. Other parents might ask them in details and learn...

A Choice That Mattered

...my dreams and my life drastically. Any dilemma is a question that requires you to invest your time, your thoughts and then act. Act only when you are sure: when you are sure of what you believe, then you shall never repent for your choice and you shall never question your identity. You will lose yourself once you have succumbed to the pressure of society. In fact, I actually did. And by fate and God’s grace, I had a narrow escape: God knew it was not the right path for me. I knew it, too, but sometimes wearing a mask becomes important when it’s for love, survival or persuasion, In Orwell’s case I felt it was due to persuasion and his image. In the year 2005, I joined the vacation batch of a reputed coaching centre to train for medical entrance...

Architecture in Library

...Attractiveness, is the innovative appearance that pleasures the eyes and mind. Such beauty that creates a pleasing attainment of design upon arrival. These elements must accommodate one another to develop a successful relationship between public external space and personal interior space. On the street of Roosevelt way, lies a local University Branch library, with parking spaces along both sides, a bike rack on the right side near the entrance and a crosswalk at the traffic light to ensure a parking area for those who have come with different ways of transportation. This demonstrates Vitruvius’ utility element in architecture. The exterior spaces of the library is cleverly laid out with two sets of large stairs leading up to the main entrance in the center. This forms an isolation between the busy streets and library. By erecting the building further away from the main road, yet still inviting, it will allow library goers to study or read without any disturbances. Inside, consists of three major spaces, the customer service desk which is aligned with the entrance and the division of study spaces on both the left and the right side. The studying and reading...

Vessels and Honour

...VESSELS OF HONOUR But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work. I normally use to think this scripture was for some special group of people till I met four lepers at the entrance of the city gate. Rejected by all but chosen by God to fulfil his prophecy these Lepers did not only have faith but also Love. In times when women killed their kids for food, these lepers thought of the nation when they took over a camp by the workings of God. Israel had an army that God could have used but God chose the four lepers instead. In life we mostly consider ourselves unworthy because of rejections we face in the hands of men. We look down on ourselves because something we lack or feel we lack and say we are not good enough. But God thinks otherwise if we are faithful to Him and try our best to please Him. God doesn't make mistakes and does not wish anyone to suffer but to give Love, Peace and Joy to all men. You may think God has abandoned you but God is positioning you to fulfil His prophecy. Whenever you are rejected by those you Love tell yourself, “they might be doing it for evil but God is turning it into good, and that many may be saved". BY...
