America's Greedy Actions

...Abby Johnson Mr. Son Mai History 202 September 14, 2011 America’s Greedy Actions The late 19th century was a time when the United States was going through many changes, causing most of the citizens to be greedy for money, land and many other things. During this time period, the Civil War had just ended and reconstruction was taking place. Reconstruction meant improvement in the government and an entire new lifestyle. Because America had new methods of labor, founded natural resources worth a lot of money, and new land to work with, they became greedy and wanted more of whatever they had. In the 19th century, several immigrants came to America for jobs, which led to what is known as today “cheap labor.” Being that so many immigrants were coming across the border for money, every one of them were opposing against each other, causing the outcome to be people working for little pay and the companies were making more money. Greedy Americans would make them work close to ten hours a day for six days a week, while their pay was between a range of ten to twenty cents an hour, depending on each one of their abilities. Because of this, many organizations and unions formed and strikes came about to show Americans that they will not make the middle class their slave. The Knights of Labor, founded by Uriah Smith Stephens, was an organization that accepted skilled and unskilled workers, women, and black people. This association called for eight hours of labor a day, however; this eliminated...

...the possible causes have been listed you can start to eliminate non-causes of the problem. For example, on my list one possible cause is lost key. However, if we have the key to the car then we can eliminate lost key from our diagram knowing that is no longer a likely cause of reason for the car not starting. When eliminating a possible cause, it is still best to leave it on the diagram by just crossing it out and not removing it. This allows you to return at a later time to determine if you have eliminated true causes of the problem (Dr. McNeese, n.d.). The next step would be to determine how likely each idea is an actual cause of the problem. You can do this by adding notes to each idea such as (v) very likely, (s) somewhat likely, and (n) not likely. For example, if you put gas in the car yesterday and you know the possibility of no gas is not likely, you would put (n) next to no gas eliminating that possibility (Dr. McNeese, n.d.). Man File

...CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION Background and Rationale of the Study Job satisfaction in registered nurses should be of great concern to any organization. Nurses hold the majority of positions in most health care settings, and replacement of licensed personnel is costly and time consuming. As newly graduated nurses, we have limited time but ample exposure to varying degrees of job satisfaction. What makes some so happy with their chosen profession, and others so unhappy? Aside from a change of career, is there a solution? With the current nursing shortage, and the anticipation of worsening conditions, we set out to investigate the sources of dissatisfaction in the health care setting. We reviewed several scholarly sources and withdrew pertinent information. Following the discussion of literature findings is a summary including suggestions for further research. In the article written by Fletcher, job satisfactions as well as dissatisfactions were investigated. Questionnaires were mailed to 5,192 registered nurses (RNs), 1,780 of which were returned and scored using several evaluation methods (Fletcher, 2001). Researchers looked at job satisfaction, patient satisfaction and safety, extrinsic work values, role of the immediate supervisor, and intent to stay in nursing. Job satisfaction was evaluated on several levels: Profits, Job performance, Intrinsic work values, and, Patient care issues. Profits referred not to personal financial gain, but to the organization’s profits. Many...

Great Depression

...Part I: Pre-crisis time, what caused crisis, reasons of collapse In 1920s the economic progress in United States seemed everywhere, as Americans emerged from the self-imposed rationing and sacrifice of World War I and went on a buying spree. Millions of people across the country bought their first everything—their first automobile, washing machine, camera, radio, refrigerator. These products came off America’s assembly lines in an endless stream. More people were at work in U.S. factories and production plants than ever before, producing more goods than ever before. The U.S. economy was sometimes compared to an economic miracle. Consumers in the United States were not the only ones to experience good times. U.S. investors had also had a field day. Overseas, U.S. investments nearly doubled from $3.98 billion in 1919 to $7.5 billion by 1929. The New York Stock Exchange, which served for many as the truest indicator of the nation’s economic pulse, enjoyed phenomenal growth, especially after 1923. Stock purchases on the Exchange increased four-fold between 1923 and 1930. And stock sales were only outstripped by the rise in stock prices. Altogether, investment in the stock market and in bonds rose sharper than any other economic indicator during the decade, faster, in fact, than the actual production or sales of manufactured goods. During the 1920s a would-be investor could make his or her stock purchases largely on credit. Under the rules in place for the New York Stock Exchange,...

Louisiana Purchase Essay

...the journey the explorers mapped the new regions and documented the plants, wildlife, and minerals of the land. Jefferson’s vision was coming true, the Lewis and Clark expedition created a pathway for pioneers expansion to the West. According to Jon Zurn, “They built farms and towns, suffering hard winters and rugged terrain” (94). Thomas Jefferson’s vision to not only purchase, but also develop the Louisiana territory used expansion and exploration as a way to excite Americans and fuel patriotism. Exploration and “The spread of the nation further West would eventually help the country become a world power” (McNeese). Gaining control of the Louisiana purchase allowed for the U.S. to explore and develop the region at its own pace. All in all, the price of the territory made it a vital investment and would later become known as the greatest land purchase in U.S. history (McNeese). The land expansion allowed for the exploration and discovery of new resources, species, and biomes. Next, the Louisiana Purchase gained control of not only the New Orleans port, but also the entirety of the Mississippi River. Robert Livingston, a U.S. diplomat in France, spent nearly 14 months negotiating with French dictator, Napoleon Bonaparte (Zurn 7). Jefferson had sent Livingston to France with the plan to buy New Orleans and the surrounding area Napoleon was willing to sell (Davenport). As stated by John C. Davenport, Jefferson rightfully believed that “Ownership of New Orleans would protect American...

...American himself, had become known for being involved in civil rights cases and was “trumpeted as the one man able to defend black Americans against the Klan, racist judges, and bigoted small-town cops” (McNeese). The opportunity for the Supreme Court take a stand against racism opened on December 9, 1952. The prosecution centered around the 14th Amendment which states, “No state has any authority under the equal protection of clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to use race as a factor in affording the educational opportunities among its citizens” (Constitution). The prosecution had a range of expert witnesses that they called to the stand to develop the disastrous effects that segregation has on young children. Dr. Hugh Speer, the chair of Education at the University of Kansas City, served as an expert witness to the trial after performing studies on the public schools in Topeka. He found that in every case the white schools were physically superior to the black schools (McNeese). Horace B. English, a psychology professor from Ohio State University, was deemed an expert witness and testified that segregation of black and white children teaches black students that they do not matter as much as white students and that expectations for black students are much lower than those of white (McNeese). Louisa Holt, a Kansas University professor of psychology, made a crucial point when she stated, “The fact that is enforced, that it is legal, I think, has more importance than the mere fact of segregation...

Leading Throught Understanding and Adapting

...Leading Through Understanding and Adaptation In the working world today we see both success and failure, often times mixed with a little chaos. For any individual who has had to work through these situations, they have experienced these highs and lows. Most people endure their situation and hope that tomorrow will bring a brighter day. Instead of just enduring we need to take a closer look at what causes these successes, failures, and turmoil. By focusing on the personal aspect of these situations, we can alleviate the outside influences of markets and economies. This would allow us to look closely at the intricate inner workings of personalities, and how they are the foundation people and their interactions. How can we take this knowledge of personalities and turn it into a successful and productive working environment? When we look closely at the interaction of people, we see that their personalities are not the same. We also see that certain personalities don’t work well together, while others work together like a fine tuned instrument. By closely examining them we will come to understand why this happens, and what we could possibly do to resolve these personality confrontations. With leadership playing an important role in a working environment, how do we become better leaders? Like personalities, leadership styles also have their characteristics and it’s these characteristics that we need to take a closer look at. In an article titled “Seven Mistakes To Avoid As A Manager”...

...Literature Review Trust: “Fardet indicates that organizational trust leads to organizational effectiveness and have impacts on intrapersonal and interpersonal relationships inside and outside of organization.” It means that effectiveness of organization relay on the organizational trust. If organization trust will be more than effectiveness of the organization (interpersonal or intrapersonal) will effect. If an organization shows the trust within an organization and out of the organization with other organizations so it create more trust, reliability and effectiveness for it and the relationship will be more strong with all attached people (Rukshani and Senthilnathan 2013). Zalabaket characterizes reliable trust as the positive desire workers have about hierarchical parts, encounters, and common reliance (Rukshani and Senthilnathan 2013). If employee think very positive about their work and always try to achieve their assigned goals with very hard work and accuracy, it means he have much trust and believe on the organization. Organization provides the confidence and shows the trust and value to employee for achieving their desired goals. Employee tries to fulfill the expectations of organization to prove the capabilities and trust that organization shows on him. So it is mutual dependency. Another research says that the trust in the workplace is essential to organizational performance and competitiveness in an increasingly global economy (Lamsa and Pucetaite 2006). ...

Water to Diamonds

...Jamie Allred Paper 3 English 203-A Water to Diamonds Physical pain is often the result of a great triumph. Many athletes thrive under physical pain. However, there is also a fair amount of people who flee pain and thrive when encouraged and loved. In the following two stories, there are both types of people portrayed by the same type of imagery. Understanding the imagery in Ellen Gilchrist’s “Traveler” helps readers to better understand Doris Lessing’s piece “Through The Tunnel”, because once readers come to understand how the use of touch and feel of her own physical body in “Traveler” actually portrays how LeLe views and grows into accepting herself, they can understand the beating and bruises that Jerry takes in “Through The Tunnel” represents the same thing. As LeLe feels physically skinnier, lighter and prettier, her self-image grows more positive, however Jerry’s self-image grows more positive as he experiences increasing physical pain and challenges. Through the summer or week and shown by their physical body, both LeLe and Jerry go from insecure to confident. “Traveler” starts out with LeLe actually feeling very uncomfortable physically. She “was sweating heavily in a pink linen suit, and [her] straw hat was making [her] head itch… [her] linen dress was helplessly wrinkled… and teeth were worn out from being brushed.” (Gilchrist, 573). She was trying to put her best foot forward in pink suit and straw hat, but her sweat and overly brushed teeth reveals her nervousness...

Comparing Randall's The Civil War And Reconstruction

...nation led to two entirely different cultures, and made the North and South so different that compromises could no longer fix the problems the nation had; the only way to fix the divide between the two regions was through violence. Social protests of slavery were prominent issues between the North and the South, which created a split so deep, there was no way that the Civil War could have been avoided. Northerners had began to protest the institution of slavery, which gave anger to the tensions between the two regions. Abolitionists no longer believed that men should be property, and they were outspoken about their new ideals. Abolitionist movements angered the South, and anti-abolitionists riots broke out in cities such as Philadelphia (McNeese 88). Abolitionists became more inspired as slavery remained. Uncle Tom’s Cabin brought more attention to the harsh practices of slavery, and the terrible way slaves were treated. As it was discovered just how horrible slavery was, abolitionists were encouraged and increased their efforts to put an end to the institution of slavery. In 1858, William Henry Seward gave his “Irrepressible Conflict” Speech. He spoke about the current situation of the United States. He believed that having some free states and some slave states would inevitably lead to violence, and there could be no compromise on the matter. Seward believed this sectional issue created a divide in the nation that could not be healed, and would not go away until slavery did....

Healthcare Informatics

...Preparing for Organizational Change Hospital technology decision makers now confront a growing pipeline of information technology (IT) and major medical equipment that challenges traditional capital allocation processes. In a highly fragmented industry that is driven by coverage and reimbursement policies set by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and private insurers, the cumulative impact of hospitals’ technology investment decisions shapes health care for decades. Hospitals are medical institutions with the goal of diagnosing, treating, and caring for patients with a wide variety of ailments and injuries. Because of this, it is necessary to have a broad range of equipment to be able to help more patients with greater speed and efficiency. There are many different types of hospital equipment, from simple and basic supplies to highly technical and sophisticated machines (Hyde, 2004). Hospitals are often accused of adopting technology too rapidly or haphazardly (Rothenberg, 2003). Conversely, health care as a whole is accused of adopting many beneficial technologies too slowly (including those that are hospital-based) and generally being slow to innovate (Cutler & McClellan, 2001). In fact, hospitals invested an estimated $26 billion in IT in 2004, and approximately 2 percent of operating budgets were allocated to all technology, including devices, imaging, and IT (Carpenter & Hessler, 2001). The purchase of new technology, including IT and major medical equipment...
