...met a lot of people. If I thinking even my experience in Australia I realize that I met people not so similar to me by different ways. For example: At work: most of the people that work with me are Indonesian, French, Algerians and people with Italian’s background. In this case the first difference between me and them is the nationality. At home: my private life is sharing everyday with my boyfriend who is Polish and my flatmates which are a whole Chinese family (mother, father and daughter), a German and a English guys. During my free time I love to meet my new friends as well, in particular an English girl and two Italians girls. At school: honestly I don’t know even half of the people that are in my class but what I can see, and that’s amazing, is that we are a group of people of different nationality and ages that work to achieve the same result. In my home country: during my life in Italy I had the opportunity to meet my neighbors (a Moroccan family), my classmates (some of them are Russians and some of them are Cubans). Let say that even my family is not a “typical” Italian’s family. My grandparents and parents are both italians but my father’s siblings are married with Slovaks and Croatians people. So for me is common to hear and live with people with different languages and traditions. In all these cases I can say that all these differences fascinate me, because different nationality meaning different culture, mentality, religion and languages as well which are meaning...

Family Interview

...cultural heritage. I will reflect on differences and similarities between our families as well as my prejudices and hypothesis that I inevitably constructed before and during the process. To identify this family, I had to approach some colleagues proposing to them to participate in the interview. Fortunately, one of them introduced me to her friend. Francesca had an interest in psychology, and since she was free and not much committed, I did welcome her with a cup of coffee to share more about the interview. After I formally introduced myself to her, I laid down to her the framework of the interview, and she agreed to participate with her husband, Matteo. Family context The family I interviewed comes from Italy, but they moved to the UK 3 years ago. I noticed that knowing these few details I was already constructing hypothesis based on stereotypes. I was dreading the interview because I was expecting to have difficulty in stopping them talking since I was concerned about getting enough information to construct the genogram. I also hypothesized whether being new to the UK makes them consider participating in projects like mine to increase a sense of belonging. Another hypothesis where I imagined them to have very firmly attachments to their extended family was disconfirmed very soon as I found out that Matteo was offered a higher paid job in the UK, and it became the reason for them to migrate leaving their extended family behind. It suggested to me that values of this young couple...

Quality over Quantity

...how long it is, but how good it is, is what matters.”  I personally believe in making a difference and creating an impact to this world. When you accomplish the objectives you have set in life, you feel more satisfied and pleased with yourself. It is not always about helping people around you and making them smile but also feeling worthy about yourself. Regardless of your age, being able to look back and see the impact you have created or the difference you have made in people’s lives is very fulfilling. I believe in having a vision. It is important to then connect the visions to achieve results. Last year, I started a non-profit organization called Educare. The organization collaborated with an American charity foundation called “Family Care” and raised money for the betterment of education and heath sectors for underprivileged children in Africa. I raised the money by selling my very own African themed sketches. All of the money went towards the foundation. Later on, during the summer I visited Nigeria to help out at the hospitals and schools where the funds were applied. Also, I got a chance to understand and experience the lives of the less fortunate. I visited the remote areas in a city called Lagos, which was an eye opening experience to me. I was able to put myself in the children’s position and understand their constraints. My visit really taught me to appreciate the life around me and not take it for granted. I was given the opportunity to help teach classes and organize...

Essay Comparing Sonny's Blues And How It Feels To Be Colored Me

...be Colored Me”; and more specifically, how music is used within the two. Music is something that transcends people’s preconceived notions, cultural differences and personal schemas; and for those reasons can be very beneficial to use as a literary device. While the two short stories have more similarities in how they use music, they are not without their differences. “Sonny’s Blues” and “How it feels to be Colored Me” both use music similarly in that they both use music to convey certain elements, albeit how the authors used music differed in the two works. Music is used similarly between the stories as something used to surpass words when it comes to expressing your inner feelings, as well as something the narrators use to show differences between two characters. In “Sonny’s Blues” music is a focal point of the story as it is exemplifying the difference between the narrator and his brother, as well as being the thing that ends up bringing the two together (Baldwin 148). “How it feels to be Colored Me” uses music in a similar way in that it makes Zora see the differences as well as the emotional distance between herself and her white friend (Hurston 3). While...

Essay About Being A Teenager

...I suck at being a teenager. My raging friday nights are typically going to an art museum with a friend or two or at home watching a documentary. I know what you are thinking. How could I possibly get cooler? It gets better. I was never like my peers. I grew up in a 50 year old mindset in a 18 year old body. For me “growing up” felt like it never ended. High School was the breeding ground for stereotypes and cliques. For a lot of people it provided a sense of comfort, to me, it was a living hell. Everyone seemed to fit in one perfectly except for me. However, over the years, I have learned to master the art of “floating around”. There were several points in my high school career that I was friends with the athletes, nerds, artist, and yes even some of the “popular” kids. Though I had friends they never quite understood me. This caused me a lot of anxiety and loneliness. They could never pinpoint who I was as a person. It was like trying to solve a rubix cube. Some got my artistic side, others my somewhat athletic side, and even on a rare occasion some actually knew who the heck Tom Petty was....

...Gunston Middle School provided me with many lessons on the impact of cultural differences and communication styles on the teaching-learning process. I discovered that my communication style was so different from that of my students that it led to many unpleasant and conflictive moments in the classroom. Additionally, I became more aware of my personal identity and more appreciative of the diverse cultural backgrounds of my students. This paper summarizes some observations and reflections on how cultural differences bedeviled my interactions with my students in Arlington County, Virginia. In general, culture refers to the ways in which different groups of people organize their daily lives within national or ethnic groups, urban neighborhoods, companies and professions, and other settings. Culture includes what people actually do and what they believe. Culture influences greatly how we see the world, how we try to understand it and how we communicate with each other. Therefore, culture determines, to a great extent, learning and teaching styles. Addressing cultural differences in the teaching-learning process is both important and controversial. It is important because we are confronted with an increasingly diverse population of students and the wide achievement gap between minority and non-minority students. It is controversial because we may fall into the trap of cultural stereotyping and making naive attempts to explain achievement differences among our students. Teachers...

How It Feels to Be Colored Me Analysis

..."How it Feels to be Colored Me" was written in 1928. Zora, growing up in an all-black town, began to take note of the differences between blacks and whites at about the age of thirteen. The only white people she was exposed to were those passing through her town of Eatonville, Florida, many times going to or coming from Orlando. The primary focus of "How it Feels to be Colored Me" is the relationship and differences between blacks and whites. In the early stages of Zora's life, which are expressed in the beginning of "How it Feels to be Colored Me," black and whites had little difference in her eyes. She didn't even seems to differentiate between the two until her early teens. She says, "I remember the very day I became colored." Before this time, she cites the only difference being that "[white people] rode through town and never lived there." During this part of her work, Zora is showing her childhood view that whites and blacks are no different from one another. This view changes as a result of her being sent to a school in Jacksonville. Now being outside her town of Eatonville, she began to experience what it was like to be colored. "But I am not tragically colored," she says. Zora makes it a point to show how she is not ashamed to be colored. At this point she seems to attack whites who continue to point out that she is the granddaughter of slaves by saying that blacks are moving forward. "The terrible struggle that made me an American out of a potential slave said...

Same Planet

...Same Planet-different worlds Growing up partly in Nigeria and in the United States gave me an insight into how different and sometimes similar cultures and values are. I was fourteen years old when my family relocated from Nigeria to the U.S, but at that age I was already groomed by my parents and society to act and think a certain way. This was a mindset that was ingrained in me right from a tender age. There was one acceptable way to act in public and quite a different one with family and friends. As limiting as that was, it was an acceptable lifestyle in Nigeria. Coming to the U.S. and experiencing the differences in culture was a big shock to me. It was not an easy transition. I quickly found out that some of the things frowned upon in Nigeria were acceptable in this society. Some of the fundamental cultural differences between these societies are in their outlooks on divorce, homosexuality, and the roles of women. One of the differences that struck me was how briefly marriages lasted in America because of divorce. Although many marriages are arranged in Nigeria, married couples tussle to sort issues out for better or for worse, no matter what the situation is. I, like most Nigerians, believe marriage is a form of blessing if married couples are willing to grow old together. The divorce process is fairly easy in America; however, most couples will file for divorce at the first sign of trouble. My first year as a freshman in America was devastating mainly because many of...
