The movie “Mean Girls” is about just that – mean girls, based on the setting that’s both the best and/or worse time of our lives; high school. When you reflect back to those four years of your life, there’s probably a few “mean girls” you can think of that ruled your school. After watching this movie for the hundredth time, something that has become so clear to me when looking back at high school, is that everyone had a social status, or place in the food chain, and this movie seems to highlight that aspect. It may seem silly now, but for most teenagers, your social status overruled getting good grades and putting all your focus in your education at school. The question is; why is that?

Marx proposed a theory known as “conflict theory” where society changed as a result of conflict between the bourgeoisie, who are those that control the means of production, and the proletariat, who essentially sell their labor to the bourgeoisie. In ‘Mean Girls’ the bourgeoisie would be ‘Plastics’, aka the mean girls, and the proletariat is everyone else in the high school, or those “personally victimized by Regina George”. The two are fighting over one common thing, popularity, also known as the common capital. This conflict theory is the basis of the movie and the capital seems to mainly lie in the bourgeoisie hand’s, which Marx could call false consciousness, which is buying into the idea of a dominant class.
