A social networking service is a platform to build social networks or social relations among people who, for example, share interests, activities, backgrounds or real-life connections. A social network service consists of a representation of each user (often a profile), his social links, and a variety of additional services. Social networking is web-based services that allow individuals to create a public profile, to create a list of users with whom to share connection, and view and cross the connections within the system.[1] Most social network services are web-based and provide means for users to interact over the Internet, such as e-mail and instant messaging.Social network sites are varied and they incorporate new information and communication tools such as, mobile connectivity, photo/video/sharing and blogging.[1] Online community services are sometimes considered as a social network service, though in a broader sense, social network service usually means an individual-centered service whereas online community services are group-centered. Social networking sites allow users to share ideas, pictures, posts, activities, events, and interests with people in their network.

The main types of social networking services are those that contain category places (such as former school year or classmates), means to connect with friends (usually with self-description pages), and a recommendation system linked to trust. Popular methods now combine many of these, with American-based services such as Facebook, Google+, YouTube, LinkedIn, Instagram, Pinterest, Tumblr and Twitter widely used worldwide; Nexopia in Canada;[2] Badoo,[3] Bebo,[4] VKontakte (Russia), Delphi (also called Delphi Forums), Draugiem.lv (mostly in Latvia), Hi5 (Europe), Hyves (mostly in The Netherlands), iWiW (mostly in Hungary), Nasza-Klasa, Soup (mostly in Poland), Glocals in Switzerland, Skyrock, The

Twitter vs Facebook

...‘Discourse’ is a complicated concept that has developed numerous discourse analytical theories. Discourses are abundant throughout society. Society itself is built upon discourses. Two differing discourses social, and cultural discourses are used to discuss the differences between Twitter and Facebook in the use of branding. Depicting the “social discourse” is “Twitter vs Facebook: Which is more valuable for brands?” an article by Megan O’Neill. The opposing discourse of “culture” is portrayed through “Social Networking: Twitter vs Facebook,” a blog post by Jessica Kim. Firstly, it should be notable that there is no utter definition of discourse. The study of discourse is a vast field, and the nature of its complexity stands as enough of an explanation. On that note, this essay will attempt to define discourse in the way it has been understood. Discourse could be defined as any given theme derived from any given body of text. According to Michel Foucault (1997), discourses are “socially constructed knowledge’s of some aspect of reality” (Theo p.94). Discourses provide us with a port of reference and a way to interpret the world, allowing our knowledge to be influenced and created through certain discourses. Specific notions on a chosen topic have been constructed according to our social contexts; our knowledge of a particular object and are influenced and created through discourses. (Theo p.94) In the Foucauldian conception, Discourse is seen as “more than just a way of talking...

We can use the social networking sites to find old friends, make new friends and to find love. Social networking also have many disadvantages, like online bullying, threats and misuse of the social networking site. Within this essay, I will use the three social perspectives; functionalism, conflict and interactionism to analyze how social networking sites have impacted our lives. One of the many reason why I am going to write my essay on social networking sites because I am comfortable and familiar with social networking sites. Functionalism theory sees society as a structure with interrelated parts designed to meet biological and social needs of the individuals in that society. English philosopher and biologist, Hebert Spence ( 1820-1903) once argued that just as the various organs of the body work together of the body work together to keep the body functioning , the various parts of society work together to keep society functioning (Spencer 1989) . The functionalism perspective would see that social networking sites have purpose in society. The use of social networking sites has come an everyday normal actively in our society. ...in the Internet. Some of the readers might be a member of one of these “communities”. Apparently some of these Social Network Websites (I will call them SNW from now on for convenience) are more and more quoted as new sources of happiness, depression, addiction, democracy, and new forms of social and political life. Not a long time ago, during the last elections in the U.S., Obama’s crew set up an online supporter group for Facebook, which allowed users of this SNW to link with other users actively in the campaign of the democratic candidate. Using Thelwall’s definition, a Social Networking Site is a web server that allows Internet users to register, to create a personal profile and communicate with selected others. Usually you can personalize your personal space on this site in different ways using personal information, interests, personalized graphic and music to give an idea of you to other people: your profile. When we talk of friendship and “friend” in SNW like MySpace we define a link that the users have with others, after a reciprocal agreement. This allows so-called “friends” to have access to some part of the profile with personal information. “Friend”, IRL(In Real Life), has a meaning strongly embedded in the private sphere of the individual, with references to reciprocity, trust and strong empathy to the other, while in MySpace and other SNW the meaning is just a “summary statement of personal feelings using culturally approved terminology” (Source: Duke, 1992. Nowadays, a reputation online is more important, and communication thrives through social networking. New cliques are created, and some are even finding a way to make a living online. Social media seems to have quite the impact, especially on teenagers. However, most do not see the impact that it has. Years ago, before social networking existed, friends would go out and have a good time, and popularity in high school would be something of importance to a lot of people. Today, popularity is the equivalent to having a lot of followers on twitter or Tumblr. Tumblr has its own way of creating “celebrities.” Users are considered “Tumblr famous” if they have a high number of followers. This sure is a way to boost your ego, and also a way to become completely conceited. Websites like these make us think that greatness is achieved just because thousands of strangers are familiar with your face. Popularity is not about having a lot of friends anymore; it is just about being known for absolutely nothing.
