Medea’s Revenge

Based on the play “Medea” by Euripides, pages 45-47

Time: 431 b.c
Place: Corinth, Greece

(The action of the play takes place in the Greek city-state of Corinth, inside the house of Medea.)

(Nurse enters from US-C)

Nurse Look there
(Points towards DS-R)
(Enter Medea enters into room from outside. Medea enter from DS-R) My mistress is depressed. see how she talks to herself, wallowing in her misery and pain having demented thoughts of twisted fantasies.
(Shakes head sorrowfully)
(Exit Nurse CS-L)

Medea (Talking to herself) Unhappy as I am, I can suffer this no more! The most bitterest complaints cannot contain the measure of my grief. I must plot my revenge, I must think of how my enemies must pay in blood and agony their debt to me. I must... I know what must be done, and I will smite my blind justice upon them and oh... oh how they will suffer such wretchedness. shall I unfold my whole design? My hopes, my intent... desire... ambition. Though you will take no pleasure from from my words I will tell you nonetheless. I shall send a servant to call Jason to appear before me. When he arrives, I’ll fill him with soothing words of sweet nothings, say that I now share his views, and see his royal marriage a match well made and advantageous to us all. I will ask that the children be allowed to stay in Corinth, but not be sure to be fair prey to the insults of my enemies. No I intend to use them in a plot to kill the princess, they shall be my messengers. I shall send them to the princess to ask her not to banish them and as a bribe: (walks towards US-R and rummages through a large chest, pulls out certain objects) A gown and coronet as golden as the fiery rays of Helios. If she takes this lovely gift and puts it on, why then she dies a painful death and so does anyone who touches her— For I will smear these gifts with fatal poisons that melt flesh like wax in fire.
(Enter nurse from CS-L)

Nurse (cries out,) Mistress this is foolish think of your children.
(Medea turns to face her)

Medea I regret what I must do next. (Sighs)I shall kill my children.

Nurse (shocked)(long pause) Has your grief driven you mad? Would you truly bring yourself to slay your offspring. Your flesh and blood.

Medea Yes for by this unholy act I only hurt Jason most.

Nurse Wretched child.

Medea That I am not, I am a woman scorned by a spineless man who I dared to call my husband, lover... friend.
Nurse
May the Fury who punishes your children’s death, and bloodthirsty Justice, fall on you and tear you to pieces.

Medea You hope for too much. Say what you like, but it still will not persuade me from the inevitable. What must be done, must be.

Nurse The father is the sin. Why must the children share the blame?

Medea For they are their father’s children. A fate worse than death. Now go I must prepare.

Nurse As you wish mistress.
(she turns to leave)

Medea Wait.
(Nurse turns to face her) Trusted servant there will be no talk of this, do you understand? For if one word slithers from your mouth, remember this a fate worse then the one bestowed upon The princess, Jason, and my children will be inflicted upon you.
(hugs Nurse) And neither I nor you would want that.

Nurse No mistress.
(Medea lets go of the nurse)

Medea: Good, now leave, and go and bring Jason here.
(Exit Nurse DS-L)
(Medea walks over to the caldron, she adds various poisons, then dips the dress and coronet inside, slowly brings them out. Walks to center stage, sits on floor with gown and coronet in lap and places them back in a decorated chest.)

Nurse (narrates) Medea burns with hatred and wicked justice. No one who crosses her can hope to greet the morning light victorious, and crow. She is as evil as the night is black. As crazy as a bull that looks upon blood red. Yet she does not realize she is hurting herself, and soon guilt will eat her away. Oh unhappy mother, I mourn for you. You who mean to slay your sons, your own tomorrow. Revenge on a husband who disgraced your marriage bed, and, put another in your place. I fear all is lost to you, including yourself.

Hamlet

...Hamlet’s Revenge It does not matter how old a person is or if that person likes literature or not, it is very probable that he or she has heard these words pronounced by Hamlet: "To be or not to be; that is the question..." (Act III, Scene I). This quote is not only one of the most popular quotes in history of literature, but also one that describes Hamlet’s dramatic situation after his father’s death, when he contemplates suicide as an option. This dramatic story is considered one of the greatest in history and, for many people, the best book written by Shakespeare. The influence of Shakespeare’s Hamlet in many modern narratives can be easily identified. Scott Leslie’s presentation is a good example of how Hamlet’s tragedy has influenced modern authors to write similar stories like “The Lion King”. In fact, Scott literally said, “The Lion King is the light version of Hamlet”. The story of Hamlet is based on revenge and Hamlet’s internal conflicts. Revenge is a concept that is not well considered today due to the strong moral values the society seems to have. However, anyone with my same perception of both modern justice and honor will claim that Hamlet’s revenge is justified. The first point to be discussed in order to demonstrate that Hamlet’s revenge is justified is the concept of justice. Many people will state that revenge has nothing to do with justice and it is nothing else than a primitive behavior. However, what is justice? According to Oxford’s dictionary, “justice...

Revenge

... Revenge Revenge is something almost everyone can relate to. When the time is right and you take justice into your hands, nothing can describe that glorious moment. That is what most people believe the word revenge means, to take justice into your own hands and pay back the person that did you wrong. Also, people would think that it is logical to get revenge, because they figure the other person should hurt just as you have. I’m here to tell you that revenge is unrelated to logic and immoral. When revenge comes into your heart, it takes over the way you think and you’re no longer thinking logical. However, I do believe God has the right to take vengeance, because he is the ultimate judge. Revenge is immoral for humans, because either way someone gets hurt. It could be something as simple as hitting your sister and she hits you back harder. When revenge becomes serious, that’s when it can become deadly. Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” is one of the most famous plays of revenge. In the play, Hamlet sees the spirit of his father. The ghost tells Hamlet that his uncle, who is now the king, is the one who murdered him. From this point on, the play becomes one big plot for revenge. More than a handful of people die. In the end Hamlet does succeed in taking revenge for his father’s murder, but unfortunately it results in his own death. This example proves my point that revenge is immoral and unrelated...

Therefore, "The Spanish Tragedy" which is the first revenge tragedy in English literature, written by Thomas Kyd during the Elizabethan age. In this play a Machiavellian villain plays an important role in making troubles and taking advantage of the others throughout the drama. Lorenzo is the Cyprian Duke's son and the nephew of King of Spain. Lorenzo is a fine image of a Machiavellian reprobate and manipulative person. He uses his language cunningly. Simply, Lorenzo makes the use of his verbal slyness to lead the individuals around him to disgrace, because of their weak points and absence of knowledge. Therefore, he is an inhumane, eager, and misleading man; who tries to advance a marriage between his sister Bellimperia and the Portuguese ruler Balthazar. ...Types of College Students You have just graduated from high school and passed the Standard Academic Test. Your application to college has been accepted and it’s your first day at class. It is most likely you will encounter three types of college students on your campus. The three types of college students are usually called the jocks, the nerds, and the normal people. The reason for this essay is to clear up some concepts regarding the three types of college students. One group, The Jocks, is the show-off type of people who puts off their homework assignments until the last minute. Once the assignment is completed at the last minute, the assignment is usually scored a low grade. The reason for this is because the jocks are always partying, going out on dates, or having fun with their sorority. The jocks wear anything to include torn jeans/shirts, work down sneakers or boots and cheap, expensive-looking jacket. The second group, known campus-wide, is the nerds because they are obsessed with books, constantly studying and learning about their interests. The nerds are usually annoying with their obnoxious laughter regarding a really stupid joke. The nerds wear a nice shirt with a bow tie, or a tie and a nicely ironed dress pants and always has a pocket protector to prevent ink stains from their pens. The nerd spends their school night with a tight schedule for recreation, school homework, and learning new things that captures their interests. Computer programming, calculator...

...Nerds in modern day are not like the use to be back in the days. Everything about them are evolving from lame to the point now you can barely notice them from any other person. They’re just trying to fit in just like any other subculture now days. Nerds are not the same now how they were back then. Everyone calls this subculture by many names mostly Nerds or Geeks. What about the nerds and geeks of the world? Where is their infographic, when will nerds feel safe to leave their studies and work alone and try to live a little? When will geeks leave their parents’ basements and shout they are people too? How about our friends, will they ever stand up straight and be heard or will they be left behind the group of cool kids, plotting their revenge? Infrographics Guy commented “Aw, who cares, geeks and nerds rule or will rule the world when they get older so bow to them now while you still have a chance.” Yes, Nerds are still unpopular but they are coming up in the world. No longer are they basic people with button downs, glasses, and suspenders. The term “nerd” goes back as far as I can remember. The term is not something they like to claim but it’s just a gift that certain humans were born with. Everything about them is evolving, nerds do not dress the same anymore or do they act the same. Nerds are literally smart people and it’s a big correlation in the two. Being smart seems to make you unpopular. Why? To someone in school now, that may seem an odd question to ask. The mere fact...

How Do the Medieval Elements of Drama Acquire Some Elizabethan Qualities in the Spanish Tragedy.

...Thomas Kyd’s The Spanish Tragedy received great popularity and stamped as a form to be imitated not only because it has revenge as a tragic motive but also because it is a imitation from medieval tragedy. This masterpiece was presented as blood - revenge where the sacred duty of the father to avenge the murder of his son - and from that sensational theme (which was also popular in classic tragic dramas) derived its polarity and uniqueness. Revenge tragedy in its general sense defines the real dramatic motivation behind which blood and violence lies. Kyd, as an Elizabethan dramatist wanted to show his uniqueness with academic tradition and for this he owns a great deal to Lucius Annaceus Seneca who was a successful dramatist of Roman tyrants. In Senecan tragedies blood-revenge for murder, supernatural elements and delay are presented in realistic perspective. This style is followed by Kyd in his The Spanish Tragedy. As a revenge tragedy, The Spanish Tragedy starts with supernatural effect or the ghost of Andrea in Act I. Just like medieval or Senecan dramas Kyd introduced the drama with a ghost who has connections between the plays main protagonist character and future development of the plot. As Don Andrea was killed in a fair battle an Elizabethan audience would have little sympathy for him so Kyd also introduced the partial hero Horatio who is good in every sense and perspective so that audience have sympathy for his death and also feels sympathetic for his father...

...Outtake Blue (a short story) He knew he'd died at three'o'clock in the afternoon of Wednesday, July the 29th, 1988, the moment he woke up in the room that he'd come to hate. He hadn't left it for two months now, and he was wearily familiar not only with every object - with the thermometer in a glass beside the lamp and the heavy chest-of-drawers and the dark, forbidding wardrobe - but also with the quality of light and shadow in the room according to what time of day it was; with the way the room expanded and contracted as the ceiling joists shrank at night and swelled during the day; and how sound changed at different times so that in the morning his voice was dulled and barely reached the door but in the dark the room became an echo chamber, his daughter's name, "Joan," rebounding off the walls and returning to him from many different directions. He was familiar with all these things but none of them interested him, as he declined in the starched sheets, propped up against a backrest of awkward, misshapen pillows that his daughter regularly thumped and plumped up with a ritualised but desolate enthusiasm, as if doing with them what she wished she could do for her father. He'd gradually lost his huge rustic appetite until it had become a torment to swallow even the soups and junkets she prepared in the liquidiser, and he lost weight with inexorable logic until the robust farmer was a skinny wraith whose ribs were showing for the first time in fifty years. Transformers

...have taken the autobots and left Earth but he chose to help out others and use his powers for good which is very commendable. My favorite scene is when the autobots are trying to hide from Sam's parents. It made me laugh that they were on the front lawn destroying the house. Sam's parents thought he had locked his door because he was doing something wrong and Mikaela had to reveal herself in order to get them to stop bothering him. The quote I like the most is Sam Witwicky in the 2007 "Transformers" movie, "Hello? 911 emergency! My car's been stolen! I'm in pursuit! I need the whole squadron, bring everyone! No, no don't ask any questions, my father's the head of the neighborhood watch!" My favorite fight scene appears in "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" in which Optimus Prime who has just risen from the dead, fights Megatron. Megatron is a decepticon that wants to access Sam's mind to find glyphs that they need to find a special power source that will be inserted into a machine and blow up the...

Mapping a Business System

...Mapping a Business System Southern Company Services Here at Southern Company there are many business systems that are in use. They intertwine and rotate to create this machine that provides electricity to millions of customers throughout the southeast. One of the smaller systems that I am involved in is the ordering, tracking, manufacturing, and delivering of our high voltage transformers. This is a very important part of our company because these machines are of high cost and a vital part of the electrical engineering process. A transformer is a device that transfers electrical energy from one circuit to another through inductively coupled conductors. It is used to “step up” and “step down” the voltage of electricity as it moves between lines, substations, plants and buildings. These transformers can cost up to 8 million dollars per machine so it’s crucial that this system work to the best of its ability. Not only are these machines of high cost, they also have very large leads times. By lead times I mean the time to manufacture them is very long. From start to finish the building of one of these machines can take up to a year. This doesn’t include the time it takes for budget approvals, analysis, and overall documentation of this equipment to be done. In other words the process to have transformers ordered, manufactured, and delivered on time of for installation takes well over a year. With that being said this process usually starts a year and...

The film was produced by Don Murphy and Tom DeSanto. They developed the project in 2003, and DeSanto wrote a treatment. Starwars and Gangsterism

...George Lucas managed to illuminate the world in 1977, with his mesmerising and delightful rousing adventure, Star Wars. A story of an epic struggle between the defiant good alliance and the malicious powerful evil empire, this sci-fi classic is charged with spectacle and adventure. Its evocative sound track and its avant-garde, eye-popping special effects, without a doubt, proclaimed it a revolutionist. Lucas paid homage and terrifically borrowed clichés and themes from other movie genres and synthesised them together. This, therefore, created a cultural phenomenon that is to this day universally revered by anyone and everyone. In this glorious fantasy, even Gangster Films contrived to lure themselves right at the beginning. In one of the first scenes, we see guards alarmed from the noise of a space craft that has no intention in making a silent entry. As they stand prepared, holding their guns, a medium shot of a door being forced open with fusing lasers, informs us intruders are moments away from invading the shuttle. Fuming explosives jumps into the screen, tearing the door down. Still at a medium shot, Storm Troopers barge in shooting relentlessly. At an eye-level, we can see the submissive sentinels being attained and falling to the ground, helpless. The Troopers then nonchalantly walks over the attained at a low angle, similar to how gangsters would treat their victims. Obviously insufficient and powerless, the remaining guards run away. In walks Darth Vader in a full...

The Hero's Journey Movie Analysis

...Your eyes are glued to the screen. Your feet pressed to the ground as if you were trying to make the very earth move. This movie that you have started watching was something you were able to relate to. We all have that special movie that takes us out of our physical world and into the movie you are watching. We feel what they feel. We can see what they see. We can connect with the characters. Out of the three movie clips of “The Hero’s Journey” I could relate to Luke in Star Wars. He is a young man that must grow into adulthood, experiences hardships, and has a set of determination. Part of human life is to grow and develop. We grow close to people that love us and people we love. Luke is no different to me in this aspect. At the beginning of the movie, he starts out as a simple farm boy that lives with his aunt and uncle. He has chores to do just like I do in my daily activities. Both of us have to work in order to maintain a stable living. While working or helping around the house, Luke has to also find what his purpose is in life. Sometimes I would look up at the stars at night and just think. Finding a purpose in life is not easy, even Luke knew that. He always thought that there was more to life than just being alone. As his journey keeps unfolding, he meets friends along the way to help guide him. Having friends around makes the journey more bearable. Through my life I found this to be true. Sometimes when I would struggle to stay on the path or lose...
