...BUS 2240 News Article Assignment Tap to hail In ever more cities, smartphone apps are reshaping the taxi market Oct 19th 2013 | LONDON AND NEW YORK |From the print edition * * All hail the quick, reliable taxi SINCE last month the citizens of Johannesburg have been able to hail and pay for taxis through SnappCab, a local start-up. A tap on SnappCab’s smartphone app summons a cab; a driver accepts on his own phone; and the passenger sees the driver’s name and photo, so he knows whom to expect and when. At journey’s end, he can pay with another tap through a pre-loaded credit card, or in cash. The idea is simple: the app makes it easier to bring together drivers, whose cabs are often empty, and passengers. Time and fuel are saved. Money is made. In many other cities taxi apps have taken off rapidly. Hailo, founded in London by cabbies and techies three years ago, says 60% of the city’s black-cab drivers are now on its books. Several cabs are decked out in Hailo yellow. It has spread to 14 places, most recently Osaka in Japan. Uber began in 2009 in San Francisco, which has a shortage of taxis but a surfeit of geeks looking for problems to solve. Now it can find you a ride in 49 cities in 19 countries. GetTaxi, set up in Tel Aviv in 2010, has reached London, Moscow and New York. Local apps can be found in cities from São Paulo to Singapore. Besides SnappCab, Johannesburg has Uber and Zapacab (which also started in Cape Town earlier this year) plying for......

...CYBERPSYCHOLOGY, BEHAVIOR, AND SOCIAL NETWORKING Volume 16, Number 2, 2013 a Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. DOI: 10.1089/cyber.2012.0321 How Facebook Might Reveal Users’ Attitudes Toward Work and Relationships with Coworkers Hui-Tzu Grace Chou, PhD, Ron J. Hammond, PhD, and Roberta Johnson, BS Abstract With the spread of Facebook among people in many countries, some companies have started using applicants’ Facebook profiles as a criterion of personnel selection, in an effort to identify good workers among job appli- cants. However, how using Facebook is connected to individuals’ relationships with coworkers and work attitudes is unclear. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between using Facebook, rela- tionships with coworkers, and some attitudes toward the current job. Undergraduate students at a state uni- versity in Utah were randomly chosen to participate in an online survey between April and May 2012. The results of a multivariate analysis, based on 516 currently employed respondents, revealed several findings. First, those more involved in using Facebook—often assumed as more people-oriented individuals—do not have better relationships with their coworkers than their counterparts. Second, those with more Facebook friends care less about their work performance than those with fewer Facebook friends. Third, those frequently update their Facebook profile like their current job less, and are more likely to think about changing their jobs, compared with......

Traditional marketing focused on push advertisements. The “in-your-face” advertising that continually pushed brands in buyers’ faces. Those days are gone now. The rules have changed and marketing is no longer based on one-way interruption.  David Meerman Scott says, “One-way interruption messaging is yesterday’s message (Scott, 2010, p. 7).” It is now collaboration. Social media is where buyers are spending their time one and where savvy businesses are engaging with consumers. Social media is everywhere.  Buyers are talking about brands and products and making buying decisions using social media. Marketing is now collaboration. Before social media we had new media. New media advertising had become widely popular in the past decade. With new media, advertising became targeted and more direct than with traditional advertising.  Some of the methods of delivering new media advertisements include pay per click advertisements such as the advertisements seen on search engines, banner advertisements, and interactive advertisements.  In The New Rules of Marketing and PR, David Meerman Scott writes “Your best......
