Why is Anbe Sivam regarded as the best movie in the history of Tamil cinema by many? Did this movie have any story at all? First of all is it a movie? No. Anbe Sivam is an experience, not only for one Madhavan but for another few thousands, who care to learn quite a lot of things and feel conceited about themselves, but fail miserably to confront the vagaries of life. What was the movie all about? An experienced matured man and a squeamish, egotist but tender hearted youth (a typical modern day youth) travelling together from Bhubaneshwar to Chennai(East coast of India).Fate hinders their journey in all possible ways which Madhavan initially considers exasperating but later reveres as an experience of a lifetime. The story is as simple as that but the associated scenes, dialogues and the lessons learnt reverberate through your mind for a long time.

Be it the floods, train accident or the little boy's death it is Madhavan who breaks down and get shattered. But Kamalhassan adapts himself and reconciles himself to reality and helps in the best possible way he can. While it takes a lot of effort for Madhavan to tell Kamalhaasan about his fraternal love towards him, Kamalhaasan finds it easy to tell 'A.Ars, you are a go(o)d man' (it's not that easy to tell it to someone earnestly). From where did Kamal get this maturity? The story moves into the flashback of Kamal,a communist, who loves the daughter of a capitalist, Nasser, whom he opposes as a worker regarding wages. When the duo decide to elope to Kerala for marriage, their bus meets with a gory accident. Kamal is badly bruised losing a limb and is totally disfigured. While struggling in bed for life, Nasser speaks extremely rude and blatant to Kamal. On conjuring up the scenes after the accident, he evaluates stark contrast of Nasser and the sister. Kamal sees god through the sister and sees it subsequently in quite a lot of people who propagate love. His outlook changes completely.

The first half with some lighter moments, the middle with some interesting dialogues and the last with some really shaking scenes Anbe Sivam stands tall amidst other usual Tamil movies. Madhavan is extraordinary communicating the emotions powerfully(especially in the climax dialogue with Kamalhaasan). The one fight scene in the middle could have been avoided. Rather than going abroad for shooting songs, this movie has brought out some really excellent locations in India( not only in machi machi song). The choice of season to shoot this movie has been brilliant with the monsoon accentuating the kind of feelings to be conveyed. Does the name 'Anbe Sivam' mean 'Anbarase Nallasivam' trying to say 'All are one soul'? Kamal only knows. Finally, I'm sure it would not take any effort for anyone who has seen this movie to say 'I love you Dr.Kamalhaasan' for such an excellent story and screenplay.

Anbe Sivam i.e. “love is god” is a story about changing values in an era of globalisation. It is an all-time favourite movie for me and many others

Madhavan, a young upper-middle-class Indian ad moviemaker, encounters a middle aged trade union activist in an airport. Due to heavy rain the flight gets cancelled and the two make an arduous trip by every means available from Orissa to Chennai. Their conflicting values and approaches constantly creates frictions and through this journey changing value systems in India is beautifully portrayed. The movie comes with a great plot, brilliant story telling, humour and music.
It took me two years to write this review since the movie overwhelms me. I have seen themovie atleast 10 times so far and each time I discover some layer that I did not notice before. But thanks to some brilliant storytellign and direction these layers of complexity are almost invisible when we see the movie for the first time. I have unpacked some of these themes below.
The Journey
The flood forces Madhavan is forced to stay in a room with Kamal Hassan who looks “less classy” by his looks and things he carries (a gunny bag, cucumber with pepper wrapped in a newspaper, etc). Madhavan also finds him meddlesome and garrulous. As flights and trains get cancelled and he is forced to go without comforts he is accustomed to, Madhavan complains bitterly that India is a country where you cannot get things even if you can pay for it.
Being accustomed to poorer ways of life, Kamal Hassan takes these discomforts with stride and acts resourcefully to steer them out of their troubles, especially in their joint quest to reach Madras quickly. Madhavan discoveres as the movie goes along that while Kamal Hassan is disagreeably garrulous, his social skills make him resourceful; while he is meddlesome, he is thoughtful and helpful.; and while he is less classy, Kamal Hassan works for a cause that is worthy. The different locations of the two characters and their approach to life set the context for the movie.
The movie is a metaphorical journey for the ad maker who has not seen discomforts in life. The flood forces him to see difficult aspects of life in India that he is typically not used to. Such images are introduced initialy as brief shots spanning just one or two seconds (scantilly dressed children jumping into dirty flood water, helpless people sitting in a corner, etc.). As the movie goes along such encounters increase in length. Madhavan first faces a robber who tries to steal his suitcase and then he travels on the top of a bus to reach Andhra Pradesh. He then witnesses the victims of a train accident and finally travels in an ambulance with a boy who is badly injured in the accident with the boy finally dying.
In his first encounters with poverty he is disdainful and distant. As his encounters grow Madhvan starts engaging and slowly becomes empathatic. When he donates blood to save a dying boy and sees him dying despite it, he is moved and his sense of humanism and love for the random stranger finds an expression. These encounters challenge his assumptions in life and he has conversations with Kamal Hassan who has dealt with these experiences. These conversations take them through religion, consumerism, communism, and other themes about the society.
Love, religion, communism & consumerism
When Madhavan learns that the boy had died he questions if god exists and Kamal Hassan answers that god exists and Madhavan is god himself when he is moved to shed tears for an unknown boy. God is nothing by love, he argues (and hence the title, Anbe Sivam – or love is god). Kamal Hassan constantly reinterprets religion, communism and ‘goodness’ on the whole as love for the stranger.
Yar yar sivam captures this idea in a beautiful song
When Madhavan challenges him initially that Communism is dead since Soviet Union has fallen he retors by askign if “Romeos” like him will stop loving if Taj Mahal is destroyed. When Madhavan responds by saying love is a feeling, Kamal Hassan argues that Communism too is a feeling. The movie also mocks people who practice religious rituals but exploit other people in their routine life. Affection, even for the stranger, becomes his prism through which he evaluates all ideologies and practices.
Many styles of humour
The movie combines slapstick comedy with satire and wordplay that makes it a thorough laugh amidst the seriousness of the theme. There is a health dose of satire with every theme in the movie getting mocked (these include communism, government, consumerism, tamil society, religion, love, and what not). There are many occassions when conversations become serious like when Kamal Hassan talks of his father dying in an accident or when Madhavan discusses the boy’s death and just when I would think that I may start crying, there would be a dose of humour that would completely change my emotions; this is perhaps the most memorable aspect of the movie for me.
Characters that make a brief appearence
At one point the due reach the station to board the train to Madras in a small station. They ask the station master if they could each make a phone call to their families and station master arbitrarily says only one person can make one phone call. An angry Madhavan asks him why to which he cooly responds, “because I am the station master”. This character appears for about a minute but is still well developed as a government official with little work who likes to joke around and use his power arbitraryily. Many such characters wade in and out of the movie often and leave an impression thought hey appear for as little as 10 seconds or at most for 3 minutes.
In one of his movies Kamal Hassan tells his girlfriend that they should go and watch Schindler’s List. It’s a great movie and so no one will be watching it and we can have our private space to be romantic, he tells her. This cheeky comment captures the fate of many a greate movie. Anbe Sivam did not fail in the box office, but it did not do as well as it could have. With such great acting, storytelling, humour and music, the movie could have done a lot better than it did but such is the ways of Tamil society and movie fans. I feel that the movie is so subtle in the way it treats the ideas that it has not reached a mass audience despit the presence of stars like Kamal Hassan, Madhavan and Nazar. But thankfully for people with my taste, there are people like Kamal Hassan who are willing to make great movies periodically even if they know that they will not succeed in raking in the big bucks.

Anbe Sivam Review

I noticed recently that I hardly ever write about Tamil movies on this blog. For one they're so damn expensive, and when buying blind that can become quite risky. Plus, of the ones I've watched, not many gave me that "I need to write about this movie this very second or I will die" feeling. Not many at all. I haven't spent many sleepless nights thinking about them either.

Dolce: Of course, we are not talking about Arya's bewitching eyes here, are we?

Namak: What? No! Stop it! I mean it!

So I was recommended Anbe Sivam a while ago by Mukundh on this blog and decided to risk buying it despite not knowing what to expect (thanks, M!). For the first hour I can't say I was impressed, it felt like a story I had seen before, just told slightly differently. It turns out I never did see the Hollywood movie that Anbe Sivam resembles in parts, which is Trains, Planes and Automobiles but nonetheless it sort of felt familiar. I did like the cinematography (always a sucker for films with a lot of rain and water) so I kept watching for that.

[pic]

The film starts with Anbarasu (Madhavan) and Nallasivam (Kamal Hassan) who meet in a busy airport in Orissa and after a few frictions and a plane delay, they end up sharing a room at a two star hotel. Anbarasu is a bit of a know-it-all, always in a rush, always plugged in, he doesn't have time for chatty old men. But Sivam just doesn't care and he goes on yapping and being friendly despite Aras's visible efforts to get him off his back. This was supposed to be the light side of the movie, the "comedy" plot, but since physical comedy was never my thing, I was just waiting for it to be over and for Sivam's story to begin unfolding. After a few more adventures and mishaps, it does.

Sivam, who now looks like this:

[pic]

used to be a passionate fighter for union rights, a self-titled supporter of communism.

Heh... Only in an Indian film would you have Communism, Christianity and Lord Shiva in the same person.

Dolce: Oh no, are we going to get all prickly now because here they go again using communism in Indian films as if it's some great system that will change the world?

Namak: Ha! I guess normally we would, but I found they used it rather well here. I appreciated that Sivam fully acknowledges in an episode later in the film that it did not work. But he still stands by the philosophical part of it, which obviously I have nothing against. Even Plato was a communist in that sense, when did I ever complain about that?

Dolce: So all the hammers and sickles and all the red didn't bother you this time?

Namak: It's an exaggeration to say that they bother me at any time, it bothers me when they are used with blatant ignorance, but in this particular case, while retaining my personal opinion on its virtues and flaws, I did not find anything to criticize in Sivam's belief system.

Dolce: Oh good, because I wasn't in the mood to argue about that.

Namak: But while on the topic, you know what did bother me?

Dolce: Damn, I left my guard down too soon... What?

Namak: What bugged me was that the only female character other than the heroine was a communist only to get Sivam to notice her! So much for girl power, you know, so much for women thinking with their own head. I found that bit particularly odd especially in the context of equality and fraternity. Really? The rest of the film talks about rights for everyone and about supporting home-grown talent, but meanwhile the only female character that's given some depth turns out to only be interested in politics and equality because of love? I found that somewhat degrading.

Dolce: Well, there's no clear dialogue that shows she was not interested in politics, maybe it was both. Maybe it was the subtitles...

Namak: The subtitles? Yeah, that's a good point. Fine... we'll give her the benefit of the doubt on this one. But I am not happy with how it was presented.

Dolce: All right, duly noted.

|[pic] |
|She's not as badass as she seems |

Well then... To clear the air a bit, let's talk about something else. South Indian film makers seem to have a thing for Salvador Dali. I noticed a lot of Dali prints in Prasthanam, and in this one I could swear the logo (of the Production House maybe?) at the beginning of the film was Galatea of the Spheres.
[pic]

At a closer look: it is!! But it gets even more interesting. The episode with Sivam painting a mural for Bala's father immediately reminded me of an episode in Diego Rivera's life, and sure enough after some research I found that it was indeed inspired by it. Not only that, but even the mural in the film is a cross between Diego Rivera's Man at the Crossroads and the same Galatea of the Spheres. With Marx in it too! Fascinating!

[pic]

Anyway, that's not necessarily relevant for the film, that was more of a trivia moment, and also an opportunity for me to rejoice at being able to fill in the blanks of symbolism without external help. Which of course doesn't happen often with Indian films, so I have to brag about it on the rare occasions when pop/art culture I am familiar with gets referenced.

As the story goes on about Sivam's past life, we find many themes dear to South indian films: corrupt businessmen, greed, globalization vs protectivism, rich girl loves poor boy, love triangles, machetes, social justice, falling in love songs, and while some are more interesting than others (I for one did not care for the non-existing chemistry between Sivam and Bala, the heroine), they make for an engaging watch. Which is just as well because really, the most important part of the film is the last half hour.

[pic]

Now maybe because I am coming off reading Jose Saramago's last novel: Cain... An author that has a knack for placing divinity on a human level and who toys with representations of God that are far from reverent. An author who was also, incidentally, an ardent fan of communism. Or maybe because the film itself is ambiguous that way, what with Sivam's uncanny ability to reappear every time we think him left behind for good, and what with his name being one of the names of Shiva. Or maybe because I was wondering while reading the Ramayan how did everyone know without ever being told that Rama was Vishnu himself in human form, which prompted the question: in a modern context, would they still know this?

I don't know why, but seeing this film with all these other ideas running in my head, I couldn't help but wonder: who was this Sivam? And if the message of the film is that God is everyone who feels love and compassion, why does he still strike me as surreal in his patience and his grace towards Anbarasu? And why is the sister nurse so close to an angel?

[pic]

Namak: Taking that a little bit further, the real question for me is: what if you met God on a train? And what if God didn't have anything interesting to say? What if you had to listen to hours of yapping and snoring before even getting the message he's trying to give you?

Dolce: Yes, what if?

Namak: Well, how many people would have the patience for it? How many people would even make it to the part with the message instead of successfully shaking the pesky traveling companion by starting their iPods? Most people these days are exactly like Anbarasu.

Dolce: No way, he's a prick. I would not mind making conversation with a pleasant old man.

Namak: You may not, but I for example am not interested in a conversation that gives me nothing in return.

Dolce: But... what can a conversation ever give you in return?

Namak: It doesn't matter: knowledge, information, entertainment, closeness, an emotion. Anything. Even anger if it's a debate. But a character who has nothing interesting to say, I would not waste time with them.

Dolce: In that case, maybe you would not meet God, don't you think?

[pic]

I know I could stick to the film's original message, because there are so many sides to the events in the film (so many of which I have not even touched), but I blame it on Saramago, and I can't help but think of a more mystical way of interpreting Sivam's character.

But... even without my ramblings, and despite its slow pace, I really enjoyed Anbe Sivam, and it was one of the few Tamil films that made me rush to the laptop and start writing! Nice feeling!

[pic]

It seems a little wrong to give this a cheese rating, after all it's a film whose title translates as Love is God, but I will anyway. Anbe Sivam was a surprising delicacy for me. It's like fried Camembert: creamy, cheesy and warm on the inside, crunchy on the outside and the last bite is always the very best one!

Oh Lordy!! I will not join in on the drool part, but I can totally see how this gets better with rewatches. The visuals alone are worth a rewatch! It does feel like more people should know about it. It's the type of film that really makes you think, I love those :D

Nice to see you again, June! :)

Hey Vistrit, it's a good one to have on your list, in my opinion. It's got a bit of everything and a dollop of life philosophy :)

And I'm glad you like the new banner (it was high time for a new one, eh?), I was very excited about it too, a friend of mine took a good 30 pics of my bangle stand for this purpose :D

@ Shazia - heya! I liked Anbe Sivam much much better than KM. But then I didn't care much for Kannathil Muthamittal for many reasons, so it's not difficult for another film to be better than it ;). But I am probably the only person in the world to not rave about KM, so do watch it, I'm sure you'll love it, everyone else does.

Pithamagan is one I sort of had my eye on (because of Surya :D), but I am so prejudiced against Bala's films. Not that I think they're bad, because I have yet to muster up the courage to watch one, but I'm a little afraid of them :) When I do work up the courage, this one and Naan Kaduvul are at the top of my Bala list.

Thanks for the visit guys! :)

Heeey Mukundh, you're still around! I tried going to your blog to link to that post where you wrote somewhat about Anbe Sivam and it was saying the blog is gone... :-/ Weird! Nice to see that it's not, and I will now link as initially planned :) I really liked this one, thanks for the recco. Would not mind watching more Kamal in the future.

Btw, this other movie you recommend does not pop up in imdb. Perhaps a different transliteration? I found one that's close: Aadukalam with Dhanush. Is that it?

Hey Ram! was coincidentally already on my list. I found a lot of references to it when I was looking for adaptations of the Ramayan, so I will be watching that soon. Was surprised that SRK was in it??? I can so not see SRK and Kamal in the same film, but guess I'll see that soon enough :)

I keep hearing that Kamal is a wonderful dancer, any suggestions of good films where he dances too?

LOL!! Hey Ram doesn't have anything common with Ramayanam. The title of the film refers to the last words uttered by Gandhi. The film is about one man's desire to kill Gandhi for causing the communal violence during Independence. And his change of mind. Kamal is a big fan of Gandhi (am not) and intended this to be a homage to him. Ironically enf. the film was accused of being anti-gandhian!! Thou it is no where near anti-gandhism. Am u will see a v v diff SRK here. And the film is bit disturbing, esp the first half. I suggest u move this one up the queue & c is ASAP. Kamal is indeed a bloody good dancer. Salangai Oli - Sound of bangles. A total film based on dance. A film i have been wanting to write abt. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086231/ the imdb link is for the telugu version of it.unable to find the link for tamil one. i thk it was shot simultaneously in tamil n telugu..

Really? That's so weird... I wonder why it kept popping up when I was googling Ramayan adaptations... :-/ Granted, I didn't read any of the reviews because most people can't keep spoilers to themselves, but I was convinced of it... Well, either way, I'm intrigued enough to watch it now.

And thank you for the other one, I actually prefer the Telugu versions, not to piss you off, but because they're so much cheaper. :D And if you write about it, post a link here please!

Oh, and about your other question, keep scrolling down :)

Sagara Sangamam is made in Telugu originally and later dubbed into tamil. But so far I have not found a subbed version of DVD anywhere. If there is one telugu movie that you can't miss, then it would be Sagara Sangamam. But I am not certain how outsiders will take this movie. Watch it and review it. This movie needs more love.

This movie is full of wonderful songs.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-J2YjDtBGs

he film follows the events of an unexpected journey from Bhubaneswar to Chennai which is undertaken by two men who are polar opposites, Nalla Sivam (Kamal Haasan) and Anbarasu (R. Madhavan). The film addressed a series of themes including that of communism, atheism and altruism, bringing through the film writer Kamal Haasan's views as a humanist. The film also explores topics such as compassion, globalisation and rationalism in today’s world.[14] The first half of the film resembles Hollywood film Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987) and characterisation of Hassan is said to be inspired from noted communist playwright and actor Safdar Hashmi who is still considered an important voice in Indian political theatre.[4][15][16] The painting portrayed in the film is said to be inspired from Diego Rivera’s representation of the state of the world in the 1930s.[17]G. Dhananjayan in his book Pride of Tamil Cinema: 1931 to 2013 mentioned that the film talks about "importance of love in life and projects the value of love even bigger than god" and the film criticises "mechanisation and computerisation".[18]

The movie also named after the two important roles, ANB-arasu and nalla-SIVAM. The thing to be noted here is ANB-arasu hates ANBU (He calls himself as A.Ars) and nalla-SIVAM hates SIVAM (He calls himself as Nallan). Arasu in Tamil is known as Government or ruler, where-as Nallan means being good human.

Soundtrack[edit]

The music for the film was composed by Vidyasagar, while lyrics were written by Vairamuthu. The titular song was initially written to be sung in a third person tone and thus Kamal Haasan was reluctant to do perform the track to avoid his character being reflected in the song. Subsequently after being convinced by Vidyasagar, he agreed to render the version.[19] The song "Mouname Paarvayai" was not included in the film.[20] The song "Poovaasam" is based on Shuddh Sarang raga and it marked the debut of playback singer Vijay Prakash in Tamil.[21]

ன்பே சிவம்

'யார் யார் சிவம்' (Yaar Yaar Sivam) from the movie அன்பெ சிவம் (Anbe Sivam) is heavy on philosophy but very light on lyrics. This song was sung by Kamal Hassan, notably known for his predilection to Tamil and using it accurately. Pay attention to the pronunciation.

The video includes the cinematic version and the audio version. Start at the 3:50 mark to get to the audio version directly. Most people think this movie was directed by Kamal himself. Interesting tidbit; it was directed by Sundar.C.

Media

...which is said to have been developed by the Persian emperor Cyrus the Great (c. 550 BC) after his conquest of Media. The role of the system as an intelligence gathering apparatus is well documented, and the service was (later) called angariae, a term that in time turned to indicate a tax system. The Old Testament (Esther, VIII) makes mention of this system: Ahasuerus, king of Medes, used couriers for communicating his decisions.[citation needed] The word communication is derived from the Latin root communicare. This was due to the Roman Empire also devising what might be described as a mail or postal system, in order to centralize control of the empire from Rome. This allowed for personal letters and for Rome to gather knowledge about events in its many widespread provinces. More advanced postal systems later appeared in the Islamic Caliphate and the Mongol Empire during the Middle Ages. The term "media" in its modern application relating to communication channels is traced back to its first use as such by Canadian communications theorist Marshall McLuhan, who stated in Counterblast (1954): "The media are not toys; they should not be in the hands of Mother Goose and Peter Pan executives. They can be entrusted only to new artists, because they are art forms." By the mid-1960s, the term had spread to general use in North America and the United Kingdom. ("Mass media", in contrast, was, according to H.L. Mencken, used as early as 1923 in the United...

The Importance Of Media On The Media

...Media informs the public about everything that’s happening around them. There are issues of different natures for example of political nature about which the common masses have no knowledge. For such issues, they have to rely on the media for access of information. The way media will impart this information is very important as media can manipulate the thought and opinions of the masses. Happer and Philo (2013) support this idea on the basis of their empirical studies that found that media limits the understanding of the audience and also removes the alternative solutions to political problems from the public. Media’s concentration on few topics decides how individuals in that society shape their opinions and actions in accordance as in a study conducted by Radoli (2011) found out that media owners frequently influence the editorial content which not only ends up in inciting the people in Kenya to violence but also disregard of the human rights. Thus newspapers do affect the public opinion and shape their behaviors. As newspapers are an important source of information so it’s important to note how they use agenda setting and framing in their content to influence the readers. Cissel (2012) supports this notion as her study concluded that media both mainstream and alternative uses agenda setting and frames...

...The Media and its responsibilities Introduction to Ethics and Social Responsibility (SOC120) Aron Scott Instructor: Shelia Farr June 1, 2015 There has been a lot of controversy as of late surrounding the media’s focal topics and its responsibility to the public. According to Keith Davis, “Social Responsibility is the obligation of the decision maker to take decisions which protect and improve the welfare of the society as a whole with their own interest.” However, the simple function that we evaluate is media provides the public with a bunch of news, information and entertainment. These news stations take a story that they feel will increase their ratings and the stories that they feel will big about a bigger controversies. The media’s main function should be informing their viewers about all the current events going on around the world and also in the state that they based in. When the media decides to expose a particular issue they should do so in an objective, fair and accurate way, but that is not always the case in most circumstances. Utilitarianism suggests that there is an obvious solution that is fair, and it may be one that appeals to common sense as well. If you look at the responsibilities of the media from a utilitarian point of view the media should inform people about issues that are related. For example the big uproar about white police officers shooting black individuals that have made the public turn against the police departments. However, there is...

Media Analysis

...I survived, and after 24 hours I am not at all ashamed to review my results. Everywhere I go, media surrounds me; at home, school and most definitely at my workplace. I spent a day this past weekend in a state of isolation. It was difficult to ignore all facets of media, and find other activities to substitute them. I felt alone, bored, out of the loop, and tired. My dependence on media is strong, and I felt as if there were a piece of myself missing. To be more specific, the use of media technology is one aspect that ties my family together. We rely on constant communication for safety purposes. My parents, siblings, and I are on opposite schedules, so it is very important to make sure we keep in contact and update one another. What I missed the most was having my iPhone in hand. I really missed listening to a voicemail from my mom telling me to have a great day, or receiving a text message every twenty minutes from my sister, blabbing on about something cute our cat just did. I use media not only for communication with family members, but also as a hobby of mine. One of my favorite past-times is working with media technology to create works of art. I focus a lot of my attention to all different aspects of media communication and apply it with my artistic ability to put together videos. My main ideas develop from the local news stations, movies, and magazines. The media plays a...

...Types of Media → The term news media refers to the groups that communicate information and news to people. Most Americans get their information about government from the news media because it would be impossible to gather all the news themselves. Media outlets have responded to the increasing reliance of Americans on television and the Internet by making the news even more readily available to people. There are three main types of news media: print media, broadcast media, and the Internet.
