After reading through the different environments for a pharmaceutical technician and a pharmacist I learned approximately one-fourth of all pharmacists work in a hospital setting. Unlike a community pharmacy, a hospital pharmacy setting is less chaotic. Whereas community pharmacy staff members have quite a bit of external communication with the public. A pharmacy department is typically staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and provides a number of specialized services. A hospital pharmacy staff is typically composed of a director of pharmacy, additional associate or assistant directors of pharmacy, pharmacists, and pharmacy technicians. The responsibilities of a hospital pharmacist include: entering medication orders into the computer, assisting in medication cart fills and the preparation of sterile products, closely monitoring narcotic drug usage on each patient care unit, ordering necessary pharmaceuticals, products, and supplies, checking all pharmacy technician work including cart fills, repackaging, sterile products, providing necessary drug information to physicians and nurses, monitoring and maintaining automated systems in the pharmacy and patient care units, assisting in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) codes, dispensing any investigational drugs and completing the necessary documentation, completing and documenting detailed medication histories on all newly admitted patients, providing medication counseling for patients discharged from the hospital, and investigating all medication error reports,
The pharmacy technician is responsible for replacing floor stock as well as filling medications for the unit dose cart. The hospital pharmacists and pharmacy technicians prepare, or supervise the preparation of, a unit-dosage system (or a 24–72 hour supply of medication for a patient), sterile intravenous (IV) medications, and an extensive floor stock inventory. Hospital pharmacy personnel perform these tasks under the guidance of a detailed Policy and Procedure (P&P) manual.
While exploring the job opportunities for a pharmaceutical technician I came across a job listing for a Registered Pharmacy Technician for Lee Memorial Health System. This position is one I would highly consider once I have completed the program. Especially with it being so close to home and an ideal schedule considering I have a three year old son… This position would be ideal for me because the hospital environment is what I would prefer. The biggest quality that I am drawn to about the environment of a hospital pharmacy is the low level of chaos (communication with public) and the flexibility of the hours, locations, and endless of opportunity to move up.
