Ans 1) Factors for attractiveness of the shipping industry

- As global trade is always on a rise, and it is primarily dependent on trans-ocean shipping; thus there will always be a high need for the industry. - Relatively easy to enter the industry; which is a threat to existing companies. - Most companies offer similar services at competitive prices; therefore a client is at an advantage and can negotiate more suitable rates as he has many options to choose from. - Rival companies fight for a greater market share and companies have started to resort to undercutting of prices, giving low prices and overall industry cooperation has reduced. - Changing price of oil plays a huge impact as it constitutes a huge part of fixed costs. - Buyers (eg- Walmart and Target) can dictate terms and prices as they constitute the bulk of trans ocean freight services. And companies, to avoid losing the business to rivals, negotiate the prices. - Concentration of manufacturing in Asia means ships leave from Asia at full capacity, and charge high prices; on the other hand, they depart from USA/Europe half empty and charge a fraction of the cost.

Ans 2) How does Meli marine compete -New CEO trimmed down size of its fleet, negotiated long term contracts with charters; sold old, inefficient ships. - Deal with a limited set of customers and focus on a limited good instead of shipping each and everything they can get their hands on. - They diversified from being a spoke and feeder line to an intra-Asia line service and also started to provide their own door to door, freight forwarding service; this allowed them to take charge of logistics from the start to the end. - Introduced specialized insulated and refrigerated containers for shipping of chemicals and perishable foods and soon became the market leader in this segment. - Meli Marine focused on building a

...1. Overview Meli Marine is a leading player in the container shipping industry on intra-Asia routes and has built a strong presence in the market and demonstrated very high operating margins and operating ROA from 2002 – 2007 compared to its main competitors. As Meli Marine’s CEO, David Tian seeks to steer the company towards expansion in 2008, with an option to acquire 16 vessels from Teeh-Sah Holdings. With these ships, he plans to expand to the trans-Pacific market. However, we believe this deal will not be in Meli Marine’s best interest at the moment, and the company will be better off without the acquisition. 2. Prelude to Acquisition Consideration 2.1 Market Attractiveness: Trans-Pacific route appears attractive as number of shipping lanes has grown by 48.9% between 2002 and 2007, and projected to grow by 42.9% from 2007 to 2012. Loyal customers have also approached David expressing interest in staying with Meli should they provide trans-Pacific operations. Therefore, this market can potentially be a big revenue driver if Meli’s assets are properly aligned to capitalize it. 2.2 Benefits of Diversification: Trans Pacific route, particularly outgoing flows to North America, could offer diversification of income source to Meli Marine in periods when Intra-Asia’s demand is weak. Moreover, in most cases of macroeconomic downturns, countries such as Asia in 1990s will resort to export-push policies to stimulate the economy and a race to affordable transport options; these...

401 - Meli Marine

...Meli Marine Strengths Meli Marine became profitable under David Tian through cost restructuring. The company moved towards owning only 30% of their fleet to reduce downside risk during economic turndown. In addition, the company invested in fleets with lower capacity, which provides them with greater flexibility in adjusting capacity and serving the intra-Asia market. Meli Marine has established a strong position in the niche markets in delivering a select few perishable foods, chemicals and halal products. Their customer base is loyal to the company since Meli Marine has developed expertise in delivering these niche products. Reasons to Enter Growth – The Trans-Pacific route grew 48.9% from 2002 to 2007 and is projected to grow by 42.9% from 2007 – 2012. Meli Marine Paper

...Week #1 Assignment Meli Marine Case Study Jess F. The attractiveness of the container shipping industry is influenced by many factors and it’s important for carriers to have clear strategies and a distinct position in the market. Some of these factors are positive while others create hesitation for companies to enter or expand within this industry. A key feature which once added to the appeal of this industry was the demand for international shipping. Five years ago when most industries shrunk during the financial crisis of 2008, the container shipping industry, particularly international shipping, experienced growth. However, when the financial crisis finally caught up with the shipping industry, combined with other factors, we saw a significant decline in this growth. Combined with economic factors like increasing fuel prices or capital costs associated with operating and maintaining technology advances, and political forces requiring shipping companies to be mindful of the affects their ships have on ocean waters, this once appealing industry has now lost its allure. Despite this recent lack of appeal, the industry still does have some positive features which can attract businesses. Since global commerce trade is primarily dependent upon trans-ocean shipping, and within the container shipping supply chain there are several segments to integrate or expand your business, it creates opportunities for these companies to grow or enter the market. We can also look at Michael Porter’s...

Bp Oil Spill

...Sea Turtles and The Gulf Oil Spill On Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 an event occurred that would change marine life forever. On that horrifying day BP’s deep horizon oilrig in the Gulf of Mexico exploded. The spill was considered the 4th major oil spill in the Gulf in over 50 years. The oil spill affected a lot of marine life, but mostly affected the sea turtles. The sea turtles in the Gulf were greatly affected by this catastrophic event in many ways. Sea turtles have lived in the Gulf for over hundreds of years, and one of the major things that were affected by the spill was their breeding. Around this time every year the female turtles head shore to lay their eggs. Since the oilrig exploded, there is a lot of oil in the ocean where the turtles are swimming, there is oil on the beaches where the turtles are laying the eggs, and there is oil where the new hatchlings are going to be swimming. This is not good for the turtles because the oil is going to cause harm and death in most of these newborn sea turtles. Another reason the sea turtles were affected was that their habitats were ruined. Five out of the seven species of sea turtles live in the Gulf of Mexico. The Gulf is home to a lot of sea life, including the turtles. Since the Gulf is covered in oil, the habitat that these turtles are living in, are not fit to live in. So now the turtles are confused and have nowhere to live. They need to relocate or they are going to die. The oil spill affected a lot of...

Benefits of Children Playing Sports

...promote healthy development. (Holt, Kingsley, & Tink, 2011). It has been been seen through out the years that the majority of jobs in the workforce are looking for people who both know how to lead and follow. When children grow up playing team sports they grow up with the understanding of the importance for teamwork. Commitments are a very important part of not only playing team sports, but also in anything that want to do as they get older. One of the biggest problems that can be seen by the children of today is that when things get tough they just quit. When children grow up with a thought process like this it only hurts them when they get older. I can remember a few years after I joined the Marine Corps I started to notice the change in the mentality of the younger Marines. One in particular comes to mind. I kid not even 18 yet came over to ask me a question about deploying to Iraq. I told how it was and that things would be fine because we are a team and everyone of us counts. He looked at me and said, “I don’t care if we are a team it’s going to be to hard to be away from my family and I would rather go home.” Then next day when we were in formation he was gone. It turned out that he did in fact go home. Finally, the best thing about playing team sports is the confidence that children get when they are a part of something. It especially builds confidence in disabled children. It was written That succeeding in athletics is a great way for young children to build confidence...

Leadership

...opportunities for improvement based upon those exercises. Strengths Most of my strengths come from my service in the Marines. Furthermore, the concepts that were taught in classes were not just for study, but practical applications of those concepts in real world scenarios. These concepts were most important and driven to the extreme when I joined the Teams (Force Reconnaissance); so, as a result, my primary influence for being an effective leader was in Force Recon. The first strength that was assessed was my decisiveness in making quick and correct decisions in a crisis situation. Decisiveness, from the military definition, reflects a range of possible outcomes. From Exacerbated to Resolution; this is not to be confused with Achievement. In Achievement, the basic concept considers the performance on how someone would execute a strategy; basically, how someone performs in combat. These same characteristics found in decisiveness, can be transferred to business as well. This is one reason for my success in my current business. The second trait I possess is being an excellent communicator whether it is in the military or business. Communication is very important to me and my business; without it, none of the projects would ever be completed. The theory to effective communication is feedback; did my employees understand what I was trying to convey? Did my Marines here the orders and understand what needs to be done? This basic concept is vital to...

Values Reflection

...Values Reflection CJA/474 Gary Vernon April 6, 2014 Values Reflection In today’s society one could easily question if society as a whole is losing its core values. I say this because, there seems to be more and more rape, murder, and crimes against another person than ever before and they continue to increase at a cyclic rate. It is unclear on why this is occurring, but I know for me I have set core values that I believe in, which have made me who I am today and I will strive to instill those same values into my children and my children’s children over time. What are values? How do we acquire and change values overtime? What values do for and to us? What is the importance of values in the work place? The above are the questions I will answer in the next few paragraphs of this reflection to better explain what my values are and what they mean. What are values? Values are simply those things in life that are important to us and guide us in the way we live our lives and how we work. My personal values are accountability, dependability, fairness, faith, integrity, team work, and hard work. While I will admit I am stronger in some of my values than others, but I always seek to improve to make myself a better husband, father, supervisor, and co-worker because I owe it to those around me to be the best I can be and turn out quality work. What do my values mean? Accountability to me is being responsible for my actions, the actions of my children, and the...

Personal Responsibility and College Success

...02/04/2013 Dennis Golden Personal Responsibility When I was younger my mother would always tell me to be a responsible adult. I really did not understand her until I got older. One day my mother and I got into an argument and never really got along after that. So I moved out and moved in with my cousin. I was only 12 years old. I needed to learn how to be a responsible adult. I had no one to take care of me and I was on my own. So I had to learn how to grow up a lot quicker than other kids my age. When I got older I needed to figure out what I wanted to do after high school. So I joined the Marines. The Marines taught me different ways to be responsible. During my Marine Corps career I was taught different learning styles and how to be persistent to reach your goals. Without the corps I probably would have not done anything with my life. When I left the Marines I felt I needed to apply 3 key elements to be successful. These key elements are personal responsibility, learning style and persistency. What is Personal Responsibility? What is personal responsibility? To me personal responsibility is to be accountable for oneself and the people around you, in most any situation, there is no other person to hold accountable for your life than yourself. Everything we do is a direct reflection of your personality and the decisions you make. Kohlberg said, “Most theories of moral cognition focus on cognitive processes such as reasoning and judging”...
