Michelle Williams BIOL 100 Miss Witucki April 18, 2013 Attention Deficit Disorder Attention Deficit Disorder, (ADD) is one of the most common disorders found in children, adolescents and even adults. Attention Deficit Disorder, (ADD)” has been defined as a genetic, biochemical disorder that affects two neurotransmitters involved in providing focus and attention to the brain. This is one of the few things professionals might agree upon, diagnosing and treatment is disputed (Fisher).” Attention Deficit Disorder, (ADD) is not something new it was first identified and studied in the early 1900's and in the 1940's, some soldiers who had experienced brain injuries were found to have behavioral disorders but more recent studies have shown that (ADD) is largely genetic. In addition to genetics, researchers are looking at possible environmental factors, and are studying how brain injuries, nutrition, and the social environment might contribute to (ADD). Attention Deficit Disorder, (ADD) has no cure but there is hope because with the help of medication symptoms can be controlled. There are different treatments and interventions but the treatments are considerably the same for all attention disorders they include: medication, and or psychological counseling and educational support. These are just a few factors contributing to (ADD) in this essay I will break it all down into detail. Attention Deficit Disorder, (ADD), is a psychological term currently applied to anyone who meets the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders or (DSM IV), diagnostic criteria.
