Discussion and Conclusions

Discussion: Part 1 experimental data were obtained by identifying and determining the purity of unknown #1. The start and end temperature for unknown #1 was 136-137.8 degree Celsius using the fast ramp. We used the slow ramp twice to find a more accurate melting point range for unknown #1. The first melting point range was 132.8-133.6 degree Celsius. The second melting point range was 131.9-133.4 degree Celsius. We now know that unknown #1 is Urea, which has a known melting point of 132-133 degree Celsius. Part 2 experimental data are obtained by determining the eutectic point of Urea and Cinnamic Acid. The melting point range for five compounds have to be collected, which are pure Urea, pure Cinnamic Acid, 4:1 Urea-Cinnamic Acid, 1:1 Urea-Cinnamic Acid, and 1:4 Urea-Cinnamic Acid. Both fast ramp and slow ramp melting point ranges will be taken for each. Pure Urea fast ramp melting point range is 136-137.8 degree Celsius and slow ramp melting point range is 132.8-133.6 degree Celsius. Pure Cinnamic Acid fast ramp melting point range is 132.5-136.8 degree Celsius and slow ramp melting point range is 132.3-133.3 degree Celsius. 4:1 Urea-Cinnamic Acid fast ramp melting point range is 126.7-130.5 degree Celsius and slow ramp melting point range is 126.4-127.6 degree Celsius. 1:1 Urea-Cinnamic Acid fast ramp melting point range is 102.9-104.5 degree Celsius and slow ramp melting point range is 97.1-98.4 degree Celsius. 1:4 Urea-Cinnamic Acid fast ramp melting point range is 100.2-103.9 degree Celsius and slow ramp melting point range is 97.5-98.4 degree Celsius.
Conclusion:
The purpose of part 1 of this experiment was to be able to identify and determine the purity of an unknown solid by using the melting point range as a reference. Finding the melting point range does not mean we identified our unknown solid because

The ice will move away from where there is the most pressure (thickest part of the glacier). Glaciers can retreat or advance depending on the amount of snow accumulation and ablation that occurs from year to year.
