This is a brief report on the current state of the organization with a description of its design, and functionality, organizational structure. The following information is a review of the mechanisms of the organization.
The organization design was based on the mission to promote better health in the community. The community consist of the consumers in the immediate area as well as from outlying communities within a 50 mile radius of the main campus. The vision is to create a health care system that can provide care throughout the continuum. Capital investments the system has acquired include primary care physician providers as well as three smaller hospitals to provide acute care to their immediate communities. The main campus houses a tertiary care hospital, a rehab hospital, a children’s hospital, a psychiatric hospital, and a long-term acute care hospital. Values of the hospital system include visibility in the community as a leader in health care providing innovative services. The hospital system also has an ambulance service, home health service, and a medical equipment provider.
The main campus includes a 500-bed acute care hospital with 22 adult nursing units, a high risk labor and delivery unit, and an outpatient surgery unit. The children’s hospital has 250 beds with a neonatal intensive unit, and a pediatric intensive care unit. The long-term acute care hospital has an intensive care unit and a medical-surgical unit. Each ancillary hospital has medical-surgical units and an intensive care unit. The ambulance services provides transports for patients transferred to other hospitals, discharged to skilled nursing facilities, and discharged home for patients who cannot be transported by family and require medical transport. The home health service has a certificate of need for two counties, Greenville and Pickens. It serves the uninsured as well as the insured populations for the counties. The medical equipment provider provides equipment with delivery to patients in the hospital and to homes within a range of 50 mile radius of the hospital.
The organizational structure is both formal and informal. The formal structure is vertical with a board of directors selected from the executive staff, the medical staff, and the community. The main hospital and each satellite hospital has a campus president that reports to the Chief Executive Officer. There is a Chief Nursing Officer for the entire system. There are three Directors of Nursing at the main campus for nursing and ancillary departments and a Director of Nursing for each satellite hospital. Each nursing unit has a nurse manager that reports to a Director of Nursing. The organizational structure includes a Chief Information Officer who is also the Chief Security Officer for the information system. There is a Director of Case Management with authority over the main campus as well as the satellite campuses. There is a Hospital Case Management nurse manager at each satellite hospital who report to the director. The informal organizational structure consists of an executive council that have representatives from each campus. The representatives receive their directives from the unit councils that symbolize their specific units. The unit councils meet monthly and their concerns are escalated up to the executive council.
The previous information provides a condensed breakdown of the mechanisms of the organization. This is just a brief overview of the present status of the organizational design, functionality, and organizational structure.
